Chapter 32
Nahlah
Before us lay a tranquil haven unlike any other, taking my breath away. Stepping onto the lush grass where it kissed the edge of the sand, I paused, glancing around in awe. “Is this real?”
“It is,” Rami confirmed, looking back over his shoulder. I followed his gaze, surprised to see the stark contrast: the oasis before us gleamed with the brilliance of the morning sun, while behind us, the desert remained untouched, shrouded in the darkness of night. It was a delicate balance, a breathtaking boundary where light and shadow coexisted.
“Let’s go!” I exclaimed, eager to discover the treasures hidden within.
“Stay close,” Rami cautioned. “Remember, don’t let go or the barrier will fall.”
“Do we still need it?”
“Absolutely,” he replied sternly. “We’re in the Oasis of Truth, and it’s best to be prepared for anything.” His gaze swept over the lush greenery with a wary intensity.
“Okay,” I agreed, my attention quickly diverted by the beauty surrounding us.
Each step deeper into the oasis unveiled a wonder more astonishing than the last. Towering trees with bark shimmering in metallic hues loomed above us, their leaves a cascade of sparkles that caught the sunlight. Fruits adorning their branches resembled precious gems, their skins gleaming with a luster that rivaled the finest cut jewels.
“Look at those!” I pointed excitedly. Before us was a trellis draped with vines, bearing flowers made entirely of crystal-clear water. Each petal was translucent, delicate droplets forming at the tips and falling to the ground with a melodic tinkle, like tiny bells.
”Nahlah, look,” Rami said, gesturing behind me. I spun, gasping in delight as I pulled him along a path paved with glistening gold, my attention captured by a cluster of rosebushes. These were no ordinary flowers; they ranged from deep crimson to the palest blush, flames dancing delicately around their petals.
“What are these?” I asked, realizing that the hue of the flames perfectly matched the color of their flowers.
“Careful,” Rami cautioned as he leaned in to examine the flaming flora.“These are emberblooms, and they’re only found in the Nuralian Fire Courts.”
“They’re beautiful! I... oh!” I trailed off, eagerly tugging him across the clearing. As we approached the edge of a steep incline, we came upon a spectacular waterfall that defied logic. From its crest to the midpoint, a thick cascade of dark onyx flowed, finely threaded with glimmering gold. As the shadows touched the shimmering liquid below, it transformed spectacularly, casting shimmering ripples of light beneath the surface.
“It’s magical,” I breathed, overwhelmed by the harmonious interplay of dark and light.
Rami’s usual composure slipped, his eyes wide as he stared in recognition. “Incredible. I haven’t seen this in...” he trailed off before abruptly clearing his throat. “It’s been centuries since this kind of power was last seen in its raw form.”
I ignored his change of wording, stepping closer to the edge and watching it closely. “Is it water?”
“Liquid shadow and light,” he corrected, shaking his head in disbelief. ”It”s the very essence that powered the first Seelie and Unseelie Courts.”
“Unbelievable,” I whispered, unable to comprehend the rarities we were witnessing. “Part of me believes this entire place is a mirage.”
“It feels like it,” he agreed, smiling.
”I want to stay here forever. It”s so beautiful!” I exclaimed. For a few peaceful moments, we watched the dark shadows kiss the surface, transform into gold, and then into a burst of luminous clarity under the surface.
“It’s beautiful, yes,” Rami said at last. ”But Kaliya faced a trial once she was in the oasis”s heart. We must be on guard, as it could happen at any moment.”
As we ventured deeper, the path beneath our feet transformed. Shifting from golden hues to a colorful mosaic of translucent, luminescent stones, they pulsed softly in syncopated rhythms, their colors shifting in harmony with our steps. Emerging into a breathtaking clearing, the air itself seemed to come alive, rustling through our hair and clothes with gentle caresses. I inhaled deeply, the crisp, invigorating breeze washing over me with a freshness that seemed to cleanse my very soul.
“It’s beautiful,” I repeated for what felt like the thousandth time, unable to take in the sights and sounds fast enough.
“I can hear them,” Rami murmured, and I looked up at him in concern.
“Hear who?” I turned my head, searching for a source of danger.
“Nothing’s wrong,” he smiled reassuringly. “Just watch.”
A moment later, the breeze picked up again, and as it swirled around the meadow, taking shape, I gasped, gripping Rami’s arm. “Rami!” I exclaimed, and he laughed, squeezing my fingers. One moment, there was nothing there, and the next, zephyr animals of all kinds were surrounding us.
A quartet of deer with antlers glinting like spun glass tiptoed gracefully by a sparkling river flowing backward, while a mother duck and her ducklings quacked and splashed happily in the water, their translucent feathers radiating prismatic colors as they passed between beams of sunlight.
“Nahlah, look!” Rami turned us around just as a small zephyr dragon, its scales reflecting the pastel colors of the sky above, darted directly towards us.
“Oh!” I laughed delightedly as it spun around me playfully, exhaling a stream of cool, fragrant air before it zipped off into the distance. While most of the animals kept their distance, content to watch curiously, an exuberant puppy burst from a nearby shrub, its ears billowing as it bounded toward us. Emitting a series of high, airy barks, it placed its paws on my legs, its wispy tail stirring a gentle breeze as it wagged enthusiastically.
“It’s so cute!” I exclaimed, keeping hold of Rami’s hand as I leaned over to pet it. Its fur—if it could even be called that—felt like the cool caress of a breeze against my palm, not unlike Irfan’s shadow coat. With a joyful lilt, the puppy scrambled upward, its excited licks brushing my cheek, leaving a sensation like dew on my skin. Yipping happily, it drifted into the air and whooshed away, its form dissolving into a gust, leaving a trail of sparkles in its wake.
I laughed again and straightened, finding Rami watching me, a tender smile softening his features. The emotion shimmering in his eyes was one I hesitated to name, and at that moment, I suddenly realized the profound shift within me.The hatred I’d harbored toward him had dissipated, replaced by a nuanced understanding of his plight.
His thumb traced gentle circles on the back of my hand, sending a warmth tingling up my arm. A moment later, he lifted his free hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear, a shiver traveling down my spine as his fingers trailed down the curve of my neck.
“Rami.” His name escaped my lips in a whisper as he stepped forward, diminishing the space between us.
“Nahlah,” he responded softly. Our hands remained clasped together, tightly pressed between us as we drew inevitably closer. Everything around us—the singing birds, the rustling trees—faded into insignificance as he became the singular focus of my existence.
Tentatively, I reached up to brush back his hair, my fingers grazing his cheek. I gasped in surprise as he caught my wrist, pressing a tender kiss to my palm. His lips lingered as his heated gaze met mine, his light blue eyesdarkening with a palpable need.In that suspended moment, time seemed to stand still as he leaned forward, gently tracing the curve of my bottom lip. Responding instinctively, I grasped his arm, my fingers trembling as I reciprocated with a kiss against his palm. He exhaled a slow, shaky breath, his eyes locked on mine, intense and full of unspoken questions as he gripped my waist, yanking me forward and pressing our bodies flush together.
I tilted my head back in an invitation, my hand resting against the firmness of his stomach, feeling the contours of his muscles. As I recalled seeing his body, remembering the masculine beauty he’d presented, my heart raced with the intensity of my desire for him. Our lips hovered mere inches apart, and nothing else in all the realms mattered except for claiming the kiss that promised to consume us both. He leaned closer, his lips barely grazing mine, when he tensed suddenly, frowning.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, my excitement quickly replaced by a sinking feeling.
He was so still and focused as he scanned our surroundings. “Something feels off,” he finally answered.
”In what way?” I asked, a chill skittering down my spine.
