Chapter 106
CHAPTER 106
Farron
D ayton and Rosalina’s laughter drifts over to me. I open the door from the attached privy to the bedchamber to see them still lying together, tangled in the sheets. I give a soft smile. They look so happy, their love finally blossomed in the way it was always meant to.
After our lovemaking, both of them washed up and immediately returned to bed, just happy to be in each other’s arms. I excused myself to wash up, as well. They’re waiting for me to return.
I click the door shut and take a staggering breath. Placing my hands on either side of the sink, I look into the mirror.
Who is it that’s looking back at me?
It looks like me. Auburn hair. Thick brows. Same bone structure. But something’s different. I’m different.
There’s more to me than there ever has been before. The weakness is gone. The man looking back at me feels strong. Powerful.
Capable of doing what he must.
The corner of my lip curls up as the gold in my eyes flickers into flecks of green. Powerful energy washes over me, and pieces of me seem to drift away, nothing but motes of dust in a sunbeam. This energy … it’s originating from inside of me.
The privy begins to dissolve, falling away like ash. I stumble away from the mirror. The ground falls out from beneath my feet, and suddenly I’m floating in a black sky. There are no stars, only huge chunks of rock whizzing past. I whirl in a circle, trying to place myself. A landmark catches my gaze.
A giant emerald throne floating in the air before me.
A man sits upon it, leaning an elbow against his knee. I know this man, this not-quite-fae. A familiar smile carves up his face—familiar because it’s the same one on mine.
“Steady, Farron, Autumn-blood,” he says, voice radiating from all around me. “There is much work ahead.”
I blink and stumble backward. The sky disappears, the privy returning to me. I lose my footing and smack against the wall.
“Hey, you okay in there?” Dayton calls.
Breath comes ragged from my throat, but I steady myself and lean back over the sink.
Warmth floods my body, rushing down my arms and into my hands. Green flames erupt atop each of my palms.
“I’m fine,” I call back. “In fact, I’ve never been better.”
