Chapter 25

ROSALIE

Iwoke in a room, the day fading into night. I never slept that much, but I’d had a bad two days after Cole walked out on me. He’d not come back, at least when I was awake, so I wasn’t so sure he’d completely abandoned me.

I whimpered as I sat up and looked around.

I definitely wasn’t in the room I’d fallen asleep in. Cole mentioned he had a second place lined up.

I rubbed my eyes and peered around the room, and let out a soft gasp as a dark figure stood and approached my bed.

“Enzo?” I whispered as he stopped next to me.

“Hey, Rosalie,” he murmured.

“W-Why am I here? Where’s Cole?”

“Cole is at work. You’re here because your husband paid me a visit last night. Claimed I had you. I knew that wasn’t true because I haven’t taken a hostage in quite a long time, and especially not one who is as beautiful,” he murmured.

I swallowed as I stared up at him.

God, he was intimidating as hell. He seemed taller. Bigger. He had a tattoo on his neck, and his hands were tatted. I knew he was definitely sporting more ink beneath his perfectly pressed suit.

“Care to explain to me why you were living rent-free in the basement?”

“Cole took me from my hotel room,” I whispered. “He knocked out Ryder. He-He drugged me. I woke up in the basement.”

“Did he hurt you?” Enzo asked, his voice holding a note of danger in it.

I shook my head. “No.”

“Then what happened to your foot?”

“I-I tried to escape and made a rope from my old dresses. I tried to climb out of the balcony in my old room after Cole chased me upstairs. My rope broke, and I fell.”

He nodded, not saying a word as his dark eyes took me in.

“Did he… force himself on you?”

“No,” I whispered. “He didn’t.”

Enzo nodded, seemingly satisfied with that answer.

“I’m going to call your husband and have him come get you. I need to talk to Cole first, if you don’t mind. Your husband broke into my house and scared my son. I do not want these things happening again, so you understand if I need a day or two to get things calmed, right?”

“I do,” I said softly.

“OK. Do you need anything?”

“I’m thirsty and a little hungry.”

“I’ll make sure you have food and drink. Anything else?”

I shook my head, my throat tight. He was so formal. Like he didn’t care about me at all. Like all his feelings were long gone. Dante told me not to go looking, and he was right. He said it hurt too much.

“I have something for you,” Enzo said softly. “Give me your hand.”

I held my hand out for him. He slipped my wedding rings onto my finger gently.

“There. I figured you’d want those back.”

I wiped quickly at my eyes. “Thank you.”

“Of course. I’ll get you something to eat and drink.” He left the room without looking back, the door closing softly behind him.

I thought our reunion would be painful, but I never thought it would hurt that much.

Guess life was full of surprises like that.
