Prologue

In which we fast forward through the week

H onestly, watching the two of them floundering in the snow while Sam tries to teach Steve how to install windows is probably the highlight of my week. My brother has never been the most graceful of creatures, and since he’s basically neglected his body for most of the last ten years, it's a complete comedy of errors. Of course, then Kelly steps in and offers to help, so I have to offer to help. Before long everyone but Teddy clusters around the windows learning how to install the stupid things, while Sam does all the actual work and Kelly just holds them in place. So, I get to watch Steve make a fool of himself, and spend time with my sweet beta. It's a win-win .

Moreover, Sam and Teddy have been taking turns cooking, and both spending time with my brother, teaching him the basics. He seems fascinated by it. Which also leaves ample time for me to get to know Kelly better. She’s more than I ever imagined, sweet and caring. Kind to everyone, but with a fiery temper. But I also kind of want to wrap her in bubble wrap because she is the most accident-prone individual I’ve ever met. I have a feeling my medical training is going to be fully utilized with this pack.

Sam insists on taking her to her doctor’s appointment on Friday, even though there’s still some snow on the ground. With Teddy’s heat coming up, she wants to make sure her birth control is fully active. She says it’ll take about a week, according to the doctor, but we’re following her lead on this.

The snow finishes melting over the weekend, and today Steve and I are going with Teddy and Sam to turn in revised paperwork at the courthouse. Thank goodness he has a club cab in that truck of his. We haven’t driven the SUV since we talked to Dad, and I keep expecting someone to show up for it at any time. So, it’s easier for us all to just use the truck.

Not that we would’ve been able to talk to him again. He seems to have made good on his threat on our phones as well. That one surprised me a bit, as I expected Mom would still want to be able to reach out, but it doesn’t feel like a huge loss if she decides not to.
