Chapter 9

Sam

I stood by the counter, pouring cereal into a bowl. When I poured the milk, I caught a slight scent of rancidity. I needed to go to the store. I glanced over and noticed my phone lighting up with a subtle vibration.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Samuel. It’s not too early now, is it?” my grandma said over the phone.

“No, I’m just eating breakfast.”

“Good. I just wanted to call to see how you’re doing.”

“Oh, I’m good. I’m just enjoying summer break,” I replied.

“You’re not working? I thought you were going to do a summer class.”

“They originally scheduled me to teach, but not enough students signed up. Only three did. So they canceled the class.”

“Oh, well, at least now you’ll have time to explore the town.”

“Yep, and I’m sure doing that.”

“And have you met any ladies?” my grandma asked, and I rolled my eyes. Of course she would ask.

“Oh, well, as a matter of fact, I think I’ve met someone, but she’s interested in someone else,” I said, thinking back to how Eva had reacted to the guy at the animal shelter. “So I don’t know if it’ll work out or anything. And there’s a minor complication with her too.” I didn’t want to mention I was using a dating service. I grabbed a spoon and sat on the bench.

“Oh, Samuel, if she doesn’t know how great you are, she’s not the one for you.”

“Thanks, Gram. That means a lot.”

I ate my cereal as we continued to chat before she needed to get off to go to water aerobics. My grandma was an active woman. By then, I needed to get going to meet Eva for another session.
