Jake: I'm glad you did too. It turned my whole day around.
Istare at his message for so long that the screen dims. I turned his day around. If I didn’t think my neighbors would start pounding on the wall or call the cops, I’d be screaming.
Me: I’m glad I could do that for you. Mine was better after too.
After hitting send, I pick up my Alani and head to the living room. Work is done for now. I don’t need to make any calls and will put in some extra hours later finishing anything that needs to be done.
I sit down in the corner of the couch, pulling my feet up under me and wait to see if he responds.
Jake: Big plans for today?
Four words. That's all. Four completely innocent words that somehow manage to make my pulse jump.
What should I say? No, I’m a loser. That I’ve been obsessing over him since I saw him sitting in the café.
Me: Wow, smooth. Are you prying for some information?
I hesitate. Then I send it.
My heart starts beating faster.
Almost immediately, the three little dots appear.
He's typing. I can’t believe just a simple text has me this worked up. Both nervous and giddy at the same time.
The bubbles disappear. Then reappear and I laugh. Is he as nervous with texting as I am? Is he thinking just as hard about what to say as I am?
Finally, a message comes through.
Jake: Maybe? Would that be a bad thing? Maybe you make me nervous and it’s all I could think of to ask.
Somehow, knowing that this gorgeous, confident-looking man was nervous talking to me makes him even more attractive.
Me: Nervous? Why? You seemed pretty confident at the café.
Jake: Me? Confident? That was you. You flirted with me and I knew I couldn’t let you walk out of there and not get your number.
Jake: I’m never that bold. BTW.
Heat crawls up my neck. He didn’t just give me his number the same as he’s probably done a dozen guys before. I was special. Before I can even come up with a reply, another message comes through.
Jake: So you never answered my question. Any big plans for today?
Does wanting to meet up with you and see how your lips would feel on mine count as plans? It’s what I want to say. But I don’t.
Me: Nothing special planned. I am talking to this hot guy. He said he wanted to ask me out but he hasn’t yet.
I almost regret sending it, but maybe it’s the push he needs to ask me out. Because I really want to see him again.
Jake: Eager. I like that. Don’t worry, Vic, I’m going to ask you out.
I look down at my phone, and I can't stop the smile spreading across my face. Vic. I can hear him saying my name now. How raspy it sounds in my ear. I have to reach down and adjust my steadily hardening cock.
Me: Then I guess I just need to be a good boy and be patient.
Fuck, I want to be his good boy. I want to hear him purr that in my ear as he’s fucking me. I expect a message right away, but one doesn’t come. Did I push it too far with the good boy?
I’m about to write back and accuse voice to text for screwing up when a message pops up.
Jake: Is my good boy flirting with me?
My eyebrows shoot up.
Well. That’s interesting. He’s flirting back with me.
Me: And here I thought you were nervous.
Jake: I am, really. You just bring something out in me.
Me: You don't seem nervous.
Jake: That's because I'm trying very hard not to let you know how much I like you.
My thumb hovers over the keyboard because I don’t know what to say to that.
Me: You're not doing a very good job. I can tell you like me 100%. And I like it.
His reply comes almost instantly.
Jake: Good.
My phone buzzes again.
Jake: Because I don't want you thinking I only gave you my number because I was being polite.
Me: I didn’t.
Jake: LOL. I have a confession. I thought you gave me yours because you were being polite. Even thought you gave me a wrong number.
My chest tightens. Why would he think that?
Jake: I’m glad it was real.
I just sit there, taking in what he wrote. He was worried that I was blowing him off. As if that would ever happen.
Jake: So tell me something.
Me: What?
Jake: Were you really just getting coffee?
I smile, biting my lip as I reply. One simple word, but it speaks volumes.
Me: Yes.
Jake: And then you saw me?
My cheeks heat.
Me: I did. It’s what kept me from walking out with how busy it was.
Jake: Want to know a secret?
Me: Sure.
Jake: I wanted to ask you to stay. To not leave. I wanted to talk to you more.
Ahhhh. How can this man be real? He keeps saying things that make it impossible for me to pretend I'm unaffected by him.
Then another message appears and my heart skips a beat.
Jake: I was hoping you'd come back. Even kept watching you out of the window until you disappeared.
His words affect me more than they should. Maybe because I wanted him to want me. Maybe because I wanted to know I wasn't imagining whatever happened between us. Maybe because the second I saw him this morning, something in me shifted.
And now I don't want to ignore it.
Me: Maybe I will. The coffee wasn’t too bad. And maybe you’ll be there when I do.
His response takes less than a second.
Jake: Tomorrow?
I guess subtlety was thrown right out the window.
Me: That's confidence.
Jake: I'm asking, not assuming. Wouldn’t want to sit there waiting if you weren’t coming.
Me: Jake, are you asking me out for coffee tomorrow?
His answer comes through.
Jake: I am. I’d rather take you out to dinner. But I start my new shift tomorrow. Three nights in a row , fourteen hour shifts. Then I have a wedding this weekend.
Jake: And I don’t want to wait to see you until after then.
I bite my lip. He wants to see me. Not just text me. Not just flirt through a screen. He wants me sitting across from him again. Or maybe beside him, his hand resting on the back of my chair as his fingertips graze my shoulder.
Me: What if I say yes?
Jake: Then I'll be at the café tomorrow at seven.
I frown.
Me: Seven in the morning?
A laughing emoji appears.
Jake: No seven tonight. LOL
I laugh.
Me: I knew that.
Jake: Sure you did.
I shake my head.
Me: You're getting cocky.
Jake: Something tells me you like it.
My fingers freeze. Because I do. I absolutely do.
Me: Maybe.
His answer comes back.
Jake: I'll see you tomorrow, maybe.
I grin.
Me: Maybe.
Jake: I’ll be sitting in the same spot.
Me: Then I guess we have a coffee date.
His response comes immediately.
Jake: We do.
Me: Well, I need to get back to work.
Jake: Ok. If you get bored you can always message me. Or call.
Me: Noted.
I drop my phone in my lap, letting my head fall back on the couch as I stare up at the ceiling and smile.
I have a coffee date with the hottest man I’ve ever seen. And I’m going back to the café where I met him. Only this time, I'm not going there for coffee. I'm going there for him.
