Chapter 40 #2
“Get the fuck out of here with your bullshit lies, Liz. I’m not falling for it. Julian hasn’t touched you.”
She smiles and puts her hands on her hips. “But he has. I have proof.”
I turn my back on her and look at the ocean again for the woman. “Shove your proof up your ass.”
“The only thing that’s been up my ass is Julian. See?”
I sigh and look over my shoulder at her to see her holding up her phone. “What the fuck is that?” I hold out my hand. “Give it to me.”
“No, you’ll delete it.”
I give her a mean smile. “You’re not as dumb as you look. Ten points to your run through ass.” I point at the floor in front of me. “Then bring it to me. Now.”
Liz starts forward and that surprises me. I thought we had a good five minutes of bitch banter ahead of us. Liz shakes her head as she walks.
“What-how are you making me do this?”
“I’m not doing anything, you psycho.” I snatch the phone out of her hand when she’s close enough and look at the photo on the screen. There’s a man with his dick in his hand. The photo is from the neck down and I make a face at the size of it. “Who’s this shrimp?” Definitely not Julian.
“Julian.”
I laugh and toss her phone back to her. It hits her in the chest and bounces on the floor when she misses catching it.
“The fuck it is. That’s not what he looks like and that,” I hold my fingers two inches together, “is not my husband. But you wouldn’t know that, would you?
Is that all you’re pulling lately? Jesus, Liz. ”
She flushes and snatches her phone up from the floor. “He’s supposed to be mine. I saw him first.”
Of all the things I expected to come out of her idiot mouth that wasn’t it.
“You saw him first? Are you trying to call dibs on a grown man?” I shake my head and point to the door. “Get out.”
“You did something to him,” she insists and points a finger at me, “you did something to him like you did something to Billy. Y-you’re a witch! I saw what you did to Billy.”
“A witch?” I laugh. “You really are pathetic. I didn’t do shit to Billy. He came to my house last night after I told him not to. I didn’t even talk to him so whatever fuck shit he got himself into has nothing to do with me.”
“He’s not okay. Not anymore, and you did it. He tried telling me what you did and he couldn’t. He’s terrified of you. H-he passed out last night.”
I give Liz a sidelong look. “Last night, huh? Minnie know he was with you last night?”
Liz instantly draws herself up to her full height. “They’re having problems. He’s not happy with her.”
I roll my eyes. “Get the fuck out of here, Liz.”
“No! You did something to Billy and you’re doing something to Julian. You have something on him, don’t you? You’re forcing him to be with you. I know you are. No one would ever want you. You’re evil, Maris.”
Anger flares in me. A ringing starts in my ears. I can’t hear Liz anymore, but she’s still talking. Fury brews, it makes my body go white hot. Liz’s mouth moves but it’s just the ringing in my ears that I hear. The ringing gets louder.
Why won’t she shut the fuck up? None of this has anything to do with her and she dared to lie about Julian?
My Julian.
The fury lights into rage and erupts out of me. I scream and Liz falls silent. She’s scared.
“Get out!”
I don’t recognize my voice. It sounds like someone else. Discordant. Dark. I’m not the only one that feels it. Liz stumbles back as I advance. Wind rises around me as my rage rises to the surface. Papers scatter and fly wildly around the room in a tornado of wind.
“Leave. Now.”
Liz screams and stumbles. She falls onto her back by the door and when she tries to get up, her legs give out and she falls again. She’s crawling towards the door, sobbing, when I’ve had enough and go right for her.
“Help! Someone save me!”
I kick her in the ass and send her sprawling onto her face in the hallway.
Liz lifts herself up onto her hands and looks back at me.
She looks like a worm forced up out of the grain from the rain.
When I was a kid the sidewalks used to be littered with the worms trying to find a new home.
I used to walk carefully to school, hopping and walking on my tiptoes to make sure not to step on them.
I felt sorry for them. The odds were already stacked against them with the gulls and other birds swooping down for an easy meal.
Liz is an easy meal right now. Weak and prone on the ground. I don’t feel sorry for her. The rage dies as quickly as it came and I lean against the doorframe with Liz at my feet. Exactly where this bitch should be.
“What did you do to me?” she sobs at the same time Julian appears in the hallway.
I don’t answer her. I watch Julian look between Liz and me. He barely spares her a glance before he walks past her and comes to me.
“We’re going home,” he tells me and swings me up into his arms.
“Julian, you can’t,” Liz begs. “She’s not normal. She’s going to kill you.”
Julain doesn’t look at her. He looks at me and kisses my forehead before he answers her. “Then I die.”
Liz’s sobs echo down the hallway after us when Julian carries me away.
