Chapter 14
CHAPTER 14
I wake up as soon as my alarm sounds. I’m so excited, as the Halloween Farm, as we’re now calling it, opens today at lunchtime.
The whole family will be there, well except for Ma who will be covering Shattered Glass and Pa who will be covering the bookshop.
Adhan has me wrapped up in his arms but doesn’t seem to be waking up. This will never do. I wiggle around and manage to escape his hold and gently push him onto his back. I know the perfect way to wake him and pull the covers back and scoot further down the bed. If this doesn’t wake him nothing will.
His wake-up call totally worked, and he made love to me before carrying me into the bathroom. We made love again in the shower and now I’m blissed out and still excited.
We did a walk through of the haunted house and the haunted walk as a family and with Elliot’s family yesterday, so they could experience it and see if anything was lacking. Thankfully nothing was and it all went well.
They did mention that we should have a pumpkin carving station and competition, so now we have a large pumpkin patch, tables and everything needed to carve and display them once done.
After that, we then went and played at the fair for a few hours. Which was completely fun.
But now we are sat at the breakfast table. Alfred and I are opening the bookshop today and will leave in time for the opening.
“Is everyone ready for lunchtime?” Adhan asks generally.
He gets a round of yesses.
“We’re opening at twelve, so if you can all be at the farm by quarter to that would be great,” he says.
“I’m stopping off at the old Myers house to make sure all is okay. I’ll do it on the way to the farm,” Cam says.
“Good. It’s a shame that house is empty,” Adhan says.
“I’m not worried, the right people will come along for it soon enough,” Cam assures him.
“They will,” Adhan agrees.
I finish my toast and down my coffee, just as Alfred finishes his. “Right, we’re off and will see you later,” I say standing up and dropping a kiss on Adhan's head.
I look at Alfred who is busy saying goodbye to Justice. Honestly, you’d think they were parting for years instead of a few hours.
“Anytime now Alfred,” I say to him.
He ignores me and carries on kissing.
“So rude,” I say, shaking my head.
Finally, they pull back.
“Thanks, Al, Justice, you’ve now put me off my breakfast.” Cam playfully gripes.
“Sorry not sorry,” they both say at the same time, grinning at each other.
“Gah,” I say, walking around the table grabbing Alfred’s arm and pulling him up. “Say goodbye to Justice,” I tell him.
“I was,” Alfred grumps out.
“Bye everyone, see you all later,” I say, pulling Alfred along with me.
I’m not the only one excited for today, everyone who comes into the bookshop can talk of nothing else. It’s going to be so much fun.
Pa arrives around half eleven and shoos us out of the shop. I’m going to drive Alfred, Nix and Sal to the farm, so we walk to Shattered Glass to collect them.
“Hey, Ma,” I say going to hug her. I wonder for a moment if I’ve told my parents how much I love them living in Cadenbury.
“Hello darling,” she says, hugging me back, before hugging Alfred. “Nix and Sal are just closing everything down.”
“Perfect,” I say, just as they walk out of the workroom. “Ready to go?” I ask them.
“Yep. Thanks, Jodie, see you later,” Nix says, hugging her.
“Bye Jodie,” Sal says, also hugging her.
Alfred also says ‘bye’ and hugs her.
“Bye Ma,” I say leaving with the others and we walk towards my car.
“Something weird happened today,” Nix says.
“What happened?” I ask.
“Some visitors came in and watched us work. They were magic users, three light and one dark, we felt two of them scan us with their magic. As soon as they saw us look at them they rushed out of the shop. We couldn’t follow them as we were both creating at the time,” Sal explained.
“And the dark witch was with light ones?” I query as we reach my car.
“Yeah, they seemed to be either close or a family. Two children and two adults,” Nix adds.
“Chances are they are here for the Haunted Farm. Let’s keep an eye out and see if we can spot them in a bit,” I say.
It’s almost time to open the Halloween event. Considering it’s lunchtime on a workday, there are lots of people here. We’re all ready to start, but Cam hasn’t arrived yet.
I’m just about to ask Nix where he is when he rushes over to us. “Sorry I’m late, I ended up showing a lovely family around the old Myers place. They seem really keen on it,” Cam explains.
“Good, I hope they buy it. I don’t like the thought of it standing empty,” Adhan says. “Everyone ready?” and without waiting for an answer Adhan heads up the haunted house steps, to stand on the front porch, we all follow behind him. He lets out a loud whistle and steps forward.
“Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the Haunted Farm. For our visitors, I am Adhan Stone the mayor of Cadenbury, and I welcome you to our town and this event.
“My brothers and I, plus you know our partners,” he says, waving his hand in our general direction.
There are some laughs at this. Really, we’re reduced to just the partners? I put my hands on my hips and glare at him.
Adhan looks at me and laughs, before looking back at the crowd. “We’ve all had fun getting the Haunted Farm ready and we welcome and thank Elliot Walker and his funfair for coming to help make our event bigger and better. So have fun, enjoy yourself and try not to get too scared. The Halloween Farm is now open.”
Just as he says this, through the trees, lights suddenly appear and fair noises sound.
Yep, the Haunted Farm is now open.
