Chapter Thirty-Four

Lainey

On Wednesday, Teresa and Granny were supposed to come to the bakery at eleven to pick up Conor.

At ten-thirty, I was rushing around the apartment trying to get his diaper bag packed with everything I thought he’d need, when Adam put his hand on my arm to slow me down, then pulled me into an embrace.

“Relax,” he murmured as he ran his hand up and down my back. “He’s going across town, not to another country. If you forget something, they can either go buy it or come back here for it.”

“I know you’re right.”

He chuckled in my ear. “And let’s be real; besides your breast milk, I guarantee Teresa and Hugh have bought everything he’ll need to stay at their house.”

That made me laugh out loud, and I stepped back to lean against the kitchen counter.

“I’m sure. I guess I’m just nervous about letting him leave.”

“Perfectly understandable. But Teresa and Hugh love Conor and will take good care of him. I’d even trust Granny. There’s no way she’d let anything happen to her great-grandson. Except maybe let him ‘accidentally’ fall into the baptismal font.”

He used finger quotes around “accidentally”.

“I try to tell myself she wouldn’t do that, since he’s getting baptized in the fall, and I know the O’Briens are going to make it a big deal.

Granny wouldn’t want to miss out on the party.

But I wouldn’t put it past her to do it on the sly.

A little insurance for his soul in case I change my mind.

Fortunately, I trust Teresa and Hugh when they said they wouldn’t let him out of their sight. ”

He stepped forward and put his hand on my hip.

“What are you going to do with your free time this afternoon?”

I put my index finger to my lip, like I was contemplating.

“Hmm… I could do some laundry. Or even clean the bathroom. Maybe sweep the floors—”

“ Or ,” he interrupted. “You could ride my cock.”

“I mean, I guess that’s an option, too. But it’d have to be quick, and we’d have to be quiet.”

“I can do quick and quiet, princess. Can you?”

I skimmed my hand down his crotch and grinned.

“I guess we’ll find out.”

I glanced at my watch as Angus walked me around the station after I’d completed all my new-hire paperwork.

“Great news! While you were working with Mallory filling out your insurance forms, I heard back from the final person I was waiting to hear from on your background check. You are good to start work.”

“How about Tuesday?”

Chief O’Shaughnessy cocked his head. “Tuesday?” Then a slow smile formed on his face. “Right, the bakery is closed on Monday, so Lainey’s off.”

“Oh, that’s not why. I need to get to the bank and maybe meet with a realtor about finding a place to rent.”

Angus didn’t look convinced, but he let it go.

“Let’s get you over to Maisy’s and get your uniforms bought, so she can get started on any alterations you need.”

Aw, crap.

I fired off a text to Lainey.

Me: It’s taking longer at the police station than I was expecting. I’m not going to be back in time to help you with laundry.

She responded right away.

Lainey: That’s okay. I can always do laundry by myself.

Me: Don’t you dare. I’ll get there as soon as I can.

Lainey: I’ll be here.

The Chief escorted me over to a small shop a few doors down from the station, with a pink awning above the door that read, “Maisy’s” with a graphic of a needle and thread.

He commented as we approached the doorway, “This is where you’ll get all your uniform supplies. Maisy’ll do all the alterations for you. She’s also the town tailor, so if you’re like Brian, and need a button sewn on a dress shirt, or need something like suit pants hemmed, this is also the place.”

“Good to know.”

We walked in and a short, gray-haired woman who I’d bet my last dollar was on some sort of text thread with Granny O’Brien greeted us with a bright smile.

“You must be Adam Callahan!”

I smiled back at her. “And you must be Maisy.”

She stopped short as she approached us and tilted her head as she studied my face.

“Yeah, I heard you got beat up. Looks like he kicked your ass pretty good.”

“I got my licks in,” I replied defensively. “He was wearing a mask, though, so I didn’t get to see if any of my blows landed.”

“Well, he gets to see that his landed.”

I realized she was right. I’d been walking around town with no idea who’d delivered the punch to my nose and baseball bat to my head. The fucker could be anyone, and he got to gloat when he saw my black eyes.

The Chief pressed her.

“Any idea who “he” might be, Maisy?”

“Not a clue. The only person who should have it out for him is Shawn O’Brien, and unless his ghost possessed someone…”

“Why would Shawn have it out for him?” Angus was indignant. “They served in the Marines together!”

“I hear he’s made himself quite comfortable in Lainey’s apartment.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I grumbled under my breath, but tried to make sure my annoyance was still heard.

“He’s staying with Lainey because someone is threatening her and the baby. He’s keeping her safe.”

I bit back a smile as a thought crossed my mind. Well, among other things.

“I heard that, too, but I wasn’t sure if it was true.”

Chief O’Shaughnessy gave the woman a look of censure that screamed, “Maisy. I expect more from you.”

Still, the only thing he said was, “It’s true. We have to keep an extra watchful eye out for Lainey and Conor, and I’m thankful Adam is willing to sleep on an air mattress to do that. I’m sure Shawn would be grateful, too.”

Ah, the familiar guilt punch to the gut. There it is!

The older woman glanced at me. “Well, in that case, I guess it’s a good thing you showed up when you did.”

The chief corrected her. “We’re thrilled he’s here. He’s going to be a real asset to the department.”

She eyed me carefully, like she wasn’t so convinced, but said, “Let’s get you a few uniforms then.”

I locked the front door after Paulina left, and although this was my down time—when Conor was still asleep and all the customers were gone, I decided to get started on baking tarts for tomorrow. Anything to keep busy and not think about the fact that my little boy was not asleep in his room.

And this way when Conor got home this evening, I would be done with baking and could enjoy my time with him.

Okay, fine. My time with Adam, too.

I let out a little squeak when I felt someone’s hand on my ass after I took a pan from the oven and placed it on the stovetop.

“That’s a good way to get hit with a hot baking pan,” I chided.

He continued to caress the curve of my ass.

“It might be worth it.”

I turned to give him a small peck on the cheek.

“How’d it go at the station?”

“Good. I am officially an employee of the Haven Springs Police Department. I could start tomorrow if Maisy has my uniforms ready.”

“Do you want to start tomorrow?”

“Not even a little. I need to get my South Carolina driver’s license and see about getting my Bronco insured and registered here. And, if I have time, maybe look at a few rentals.”

Oh, right. Because he’s not living with me permanently.

I tried to keep my voice upbeat.

“Well, I don’t think you have to worry. Maisy isn’t known for her speed.”

“You know, I got that impression. I feel like the town’s alterations revolve around Maisy time.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Yep. Although Angus keeps threatening to buy the police uniforms online and have Mrs. Ramirez make the alterations.”

“I imagine that would cause quite the uproar.”

“You would be correct. But it works, because every time he threatens it, she straightens up. For at least a month or two.”

“Well, he didn’t come out and say it today, but he let his irritation be known when she repeated the gossip about you and me. Although, kudos to her for saying it to my face.”

“I’m not surprised. She’s in Granny O’Brien’s bridge club. I’m sure you and I have been the talk of their games since you arrived.”

Adam threw his fist in the air. “Yes! I knew it! A second after meeting her, I knew she had to be friends with Granny.”

He gripped my ass over my jeans with both hands and pulled me flush against him.

“What do you say we go upstairs and give them something to talk about? I believe I owe you a ride.”

“That’s right, you do.”

“Face or cock, your choice.”

I reached between us to stroke his erection over his shorts.

“Gosh, so many choices. How’s a girl supposed to decide?”

“I mean, technically, you can have both. But you’re the one who said it had to be quick—and quiet.”

“That was before when the bakery was still open. We’ve got at least an hour before Kristy gets here.”

“What time is Teresa going to bring Conor back?”

“Not until seven.”

His mouth turned up in a devilish grin.

“Come on, princess. You’ve got some face and dick riding to do.”

I had to will myself not to race up the stairs.

We walked through the apartment door, and I demanded, “Jeans off, baby, then get on the couch with your legs spread.”

My inner caveman appreciated that she complied without complaint, just stripped and leaned against the middle back cushion with her thighs wide.

“Such a good girl,” I cooed as I dropped to my knees on the floor in front of her and ran a finger down her slit. “Or should I say, such a naughty girl. You’re already wet, baby.”

“I thought that would make me a good girl.”

I dipped my head, swiped my tongue down her middle, and moaned at how good she tasted.

“You’re right, baby. That does make you a good girl. A good girl who needs to ride my face.”

“Oh my god! I love it when you talk dirty.”

“Right back atcha, princess.”

Her hands explored my short hair, then held my head in place between her legs.

“Mmm, yessss. Lick my pussy with that talented tongue of yours. Make me come all over your face.”

Yeah, I was going to have to up my dirty talk game if I wanted to keep up with her.

I slipped a finger inside and looked up at her.

“You dirty girl… making my cock hard with your sweet pussy and filthy mouth. Where’d you learn to talk like that?”

She threw the question back at me as she ground against my mouth.

“Where’d you learn to talk like that?”

“Porn.”

“Same. And romance novels.”

“Romance novels?”

“Yeah,” she held the back of my head. “Less talking, more licking.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her bossiness.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Resuming my oral attention to her clit, I soon felt her body tense, and she repeated my name.

“Adam! Oh my god, Adam!”

I doubled down on my efforts and held her middle in place when she let out a long moan, then shuddered around my head.

“That’s it, baby. Come on my face like a good girl.”

When her body stopped lurching, I pulled my cock from my jeans and thrust inside her quivering pussy.

“Oh, fuck yes!” I snarled as I pumped in and out of her.

Lainey lifted her hips and her pretty cunt contracted around my cock as she cried out, “Adam! Oh my god! I—I’m coming again!”

I gripped her hips and jackhammered inside her.

If someone had offered me a million dollars not to come right then, I still wouldn’t have been able to keep from spurting deep inside her heat. She felt so fucking good.

I dropped my forehead next to her shoulder and mumbled, “Holy shit, woman. What the fuck did you just do to me?” as I gasped for breath.

Her chest rose up and down, and she sputtered, “I could ask you the same thing. I’ve never done that before.”

That made me lift my head and look down at her face.

“Never?”

“No.”

I wanted to beat my chest for being the first to make her have multiple orgasms. Instead, I dipped my head to kiss her neck and murmur against her skin, “Oh, then we’re definitely trying that again.”
