19. Chapter Nineteen #2
He raised a brow and looked back over at the girls before turning back to me with a sigh. “Mia won’t let anything happen with you unless she has approval from her best friend. I thought if Lyla could offer that, it might give Mia a push.”
I shook my head. “Oh, how the tables have turned. What did you say to me when I tried to interfere with you and Lyla?”
He smirked. “Butt the fuck out?”
I responded with a clipped nod and slapped him on the back. “Exactly.”
I leaned back against the short stretch of railing on this side, and it creaked loudly, shifting a bit. Adam and I both looked over at it as I moved away.
“That probably needs to be fixed,” I observed.
“Definitely does,” Adam added with a stern nod of his head.
He finished loading up two plates and carried them back to his seat, handing one to Lyla before sitting down.
I smiled, because even if we were together, I didn’t think Mia would ever go for me making her plate for her.
She’d probably dump it, and my own, in my lap before strolling off to fill a new plate with exactly what she’d just decorated me with.
Well fuck. I turned back toward the railing and adjusted myself as my overactive imagination shifted, painting a perfect image of me decorating her gorgeous body with strawberries and whipped cream, and then using my tongue to remove every last bite.
I joined the group a moment later, fighting to keep that visual from returning, and set my drink and food down.
“What? Didn’t make me one?” Mia pouted melodramatically.
I huffed out a chuckle. “Hell no. I’m not looking to die tonight,” I quipped.
She rolled her eyes, but I could tell she was fighting a smile. I sat down and almost immediately she stood and began scooting past me.
“I guess I’ll just have to get it myself then.”
She moved so fucking slowly and so close, and I inhaled the sweet scent invading my senses. My brain jogged back to my prior fantasy, my body knowing her arousal was laced throughout that scent. And I couldn’t help but wonder how sweet her pussy would be. Warm, wet, and ready for me.
I swallowed, letting my gaze roam slowly up her flat stomach and deep V of her cleavage. Her smile said she knew exactly what she was doing, and was loving every second of it.
My little vixen.
I watched her saunter away, her hips swaying a little bit more than necessary. I braced for a repeat show when she returned, and was disappointed when she went past Adam and Lyla this time. And the mischievous grin she aimed at me told me she’d absolutely done it on purpose.
The next hour went by quickly as we all ate, drank, and chatted.
Seth and I were in a heated debate about whether welfare checks should be the initial responsibility of police or fire.
My take was that most of the time medical attention was needed anyway, so why not just have us come out initially? Police as backup if we were tied up.
Mia excused herself, and I tracked her as she headed down the stairs, glancing back at me with trouble written all over her face. What was she up to?
I didn’t have to wait long to find out, because my phone vibrated in my pocket not more than a few seconds later.
Raven: Want to claim that dance now?
I bolted from my seat and forced myself not to be obvious as I quickly made my way downstairs. I found her waiting for me at the edge of the crowd gathered in front of the band that was playing. She glanced over her shoulder as I sidled up behind her.
Spinning toward me, she took three steps backward into the crowd, crooking her pointer finger at me and urging me to follow. My slacks got tight as I obeyed like a puppy dog begging for attention.
The moment I got close enough, she ran her hands up the lapels of my jacket and pulled me toward her. I could definitely get used to this.
I shifted, positioning one of my thighs between her legs and wrapping one arm around her back.
I covered her hand on my chest with my free hand as we moved together in a beautiful rhythm of intimate connection and familiarity, as if we’d been doing this for years.
I buried my face in her hair, drinking in her simple, sweet smell.
A mix of vanilla and coconut. And underneath it all, that same subtle scent from upstairs. I wanted more of it. All of it.
My hand pressed firmly into her lower back, holding her close to me so there wasn’t even an inch separating us. Her breathing sped up, coming in quick, short pants. Fuck. I wanted to kiss her. Lean in that extra millimeter and devour her mouth right here on the fucking dance floor.
Taking a deep breath, I spun her, bringing her ass flush against my body, praying she could feel how desperate I was to take this further than an intimate dance.
I knew we couldn’t. And I knew she did too.
But she teased me anyway, swaying her ass back and forth over my insanely hard cock as I ran my hands down her sides.
Bringing my mouth down to her ear, I whispered, “Last I checked, friends don’t dance like this.”
She turned her face toward me, our lips almost touching. “It wasn’t like I could tell her the truth.”
“And what’s that?”
She brought her hand up and ran her fingers through my hair. I groaned at the sensation, digging my fingers into her hips.
“That we both want something we can’t have.”
I bit back the words I was dying to say. That we could have it if she would just embrace it. Give us a chance. Let me in. But I didn’t want to ruin this moment, and the last thing I wanted to do was push her away.
We continued to move to the music, and it was honestly the most intense moment with a woman I’d ever experienced. The way we were in sync and swayed so easily together. How attuned I was to her every breath, and every little sound of pleasure she made.
I was so enthralled, I didn’t even realize my phone was vibrating in my pocket at first. I had no intention of ending this moment and answering it, but when it stopped buzzing and started up again immediately, the hair on the back of my neck stood at attention, and my gut screamed at me that something wasn’t right.
Most people texted, even my parents. If someone was calling, it was probably important.
Reluctantly, I pulled it out, and my gut feeling was justified. If Dylan Gray was calling me, it couldn’t be anything good. The lead detective of the Half Moon Lake police department didn’t usually call me to shoot the shit.
I shifted Mia around and brought her into my hold under my arm as I answered the phone. “What’s up?”
The line crackled and broken words came through before I heard Dylan’s voice clearly saying, “He’s coming.”
Blood pumped through my veins and my whole body went on alert. “Who’s coming?”
More static and broken words but two came through clearly. “Get out.”
Fear embedded into my muscles and the line went dead a second before the sound of glass shattering and screaming came from the front of the bar.
