Chapter 17

“Did he just say he wanted a box of tampons?” Shep asked. From the sound of his voice, he was half horrified and half stunned.

I was, too, actually. Between my seven brothers and I, I’d never once, ever, heard any one of them talk about tampons or periods or any of that. At least not until they got a girl and tried to knock her up.

I’d handed Shep my cell so I could keep both hands on the wheel as we flew down the county road that led toward town. I had to give Colt credit, he was pushing ninety. The old fruit stand Taylor mentioned wasn’t more than three miles from the ranch, thank fuck and we were getting there quick.

“Is he mental?” Shep wondered.

I gritted my teeth and steered to go wide around a car that had pulled over for us.

“Why is he driving her dad’s car?” Shep also asked.

Another excellent question I didn’t have an answer for. All I could do was grip the hell out of my steering wheel and clench my teeth and hope they didn’t crack.

“It’s not good, whatever the reason,” I said. I had to fuckign hope that Taylor, whatever happened, didn’t get out of her locked car. “There!”

In the distance, I saw the closed fruit stand and just beyond were two cars pulled over on the shoulder.

The road was long and straight. Flat, too. On the horizon, I saw flashing lights coming from town. Colt must’ve called in for backup.

I just had to hope we got there in time.
