I ’d shattered the window into the building as soon as he scared her. Shards of glass had rained down like stars on the bathroom floor as she backed away from him, her face etched with fear and defiance. And then she had run, and I’d been too late to get between them.

Luca had gotten to her first. To protect her, to save her. To be the one to carry her in his arms.

My fists clenched.

If her attacker hadn’t already been dead, I would have killed him for frightening her.

The look of terror in her eyes as she faced him would haunt me. Nothing, not even our plans, not our revenge or our victory, were worth making her afraid.

They were too stubborn and hard-headed to realize it, but all we really needed was her. Someday they’d see…or I’d take her away.

I wouldn’t let her be hurt again.

I fell back, retreating as Caruso’s and Carmichael’s men filled the streets.

Until I could blend back in amongst them.
