Chapter 15

Fifteen

They brought in a home for him.

It was smaller than the last.

And they got him a collar too.

A soft one.

He couldn’t stop petting it.

The blankets and pillows were fluffy too.

It was all perfect.

Maybe too perfect.

He wanted to trust these people.

Wanted to believe when they said they wanted to help.

But he wasn’t sure.

Not yet.

He’d have to wait and watch.

Time always revealed the truth.

Besides, if he were honest with himself, he could admit to being curious.

About the place, yeah, but also about Carver.

The big man wasn’t anything he’d expected.

He was kind. And gentle. And patient.

All things he’d never seen directed towards him.

Part of him didn’t want to believe it was real.

And another part wanted to soak in it all.

To bask in how amazing it felt.

In another life…

No.

He couldn’t think like that.

Carver claimed to want to protect him.

He’d said he was meant to keep things safe.

Anything else didn’t make sense.

Plus, it wasn’t like he understood the feelings going on inside him.

The warmth that came from Carver’s smile.

The urge he had to hug the man like he’d seen the others do.

He might have still feared the future, but there was more than fear lurking in the shadows with him now.
