Chapter 33

Winnie

Tali and I wait in the hallway for Jamie to come out of the locker room. Tonight was the last game of the regular season and he did an amazing job. All of the Pit Bulls did.

Now, they need to keep it going through the post season. I think they might have a shot at the World Series this year.

“How are you feeling, Winnie?” Owen approaches me and gives me a gentle hug.

“I'm hanging in there, but I'm really ready for this baby to be born.” I place my hand over my round stomach and shake my head.

“I’m sure you are. I remember how much Sunshine struggled the last few weeks. Macy and Charlie too. I wanted to discuss something with you. Do you have a few minutes?”

“Of course. We were just waiting for Jamie.”

He opens the door to the locker room and calls in, “Schmidt, your wife and daughter will be in the conference room when you’re finished.”

“Ok, thanks!” Jamie calls back, making me smile.

“You know, he’s never played better than he has since you got married,” Owen says as we walk towards the conference room.

“I'm glad. He’s great on the field.”

“He really is.” He motions to a chair in front of a large table and I quickly take it, helping Tali onto the chair next to me.

“With so many of my players starting families, I’d like to start a daycare at the stadium.

I think it would help all of them if they could pop in on their kids throughout the day and know they’re in good hands. ”

“That’s a great idea. It could help with childcare issues too.”

“Exactly what I was thinking.” He grins at me. “I'm thinking of having childcare staff willing to travel with the team too. Someone who will watch the children any time the players are expected to be at work.”

“Ok…” I trail off, unsure of why he’s telling me about this.

“I want you to be the head of it all, Winnie. You’ll be able to travel with the team on their private plane and bring the kids with you. You can interview and hire whoever you want on your team”

“You want me in charge of the entire daycare?” I ask in disbelief.

“Yes. You’ve proven how amazing you are with kids and I don’t trust anyone else to run this. We want you, Winnie. You’ll get to spend more time with Schmidt, without sacrificing your time with your own kids. I think Schmidt will be thrilled with the idea of the kids being here too.”

“Schmidt would love it,” Jamie says from behind me.

I spin around and face him. I don’t even know what to say. This is an amazing opportunity.

“You really want me to do this?” I ask again.

“Is she always this difficult to deal with?” Owen glances at my husband.

“Only when you’re complimenting her.” He smirks.

“Oh, shut up!” I roll my eyes. “I’ll take the stupid job.”

“Are you going to speak like this in front of the children?” Owen smirks.

“I thought you said I was in charge?” I arch a brow.

“Jeez, she’s feisty.”
