Chapter 33
CHAPTER 33
ONE WEEK LATER
Morgan
I inhaled a sharp breath as I held my phone in my hand and stared at my mother’s number. Pushing it, I brought the phone to my ear, waiting for her to answer while my belly twisted in knots.
“Madison?”
“Morgan, Mom.”
“I know that. I still can’t get used to the fact that you changed your name.”
“You know I didn’t have a choice. And it’s been fourteen years. How are you?”
“I’m doing well. How are you?”
“I’m pregnant, Mom.”
“Did you get married and didn’t tell me?”
“No, but I do have an amazing boyfriend who is a hotshot attorney. I work at his firm and live with him in his house on the beach in the Pacific Palisades.”
“Oh, Morgan. I’m so happy to hear that you’re finally settling down somewhere. I’m going to be a grandma. I can’t believe it. I never thought you would?— ”
“Me either, Mom, but it happened. Listen, I need to get back to a case I’m working on. I just wanted to call and let you know about the baby.”
“Thank you. You have no idea how happy this makes me. Maybe you can come for a visit. You know I can’t fly, and the drive across the country would be too much. I would love to meet Roman.”
“I’ll think about it. I have to go. We’ll talk soon.” I ended the call and let out a breath.
There was a knock on my office door.
“Come in.”
“Hi, Morgan.” Love stepped inside.
“Love?” My brows furrowed. “What are you doing here?”
“I need your help, but it has to stay between us.”
“Okay. What’s wrong?”
“I need you to do some digging into Harrison and follow him.”
“Why?”
“I think he’s cheating on me.”
“And why do you think that?”
“Because he’s been getting phone calls from someone and leaves the room to talk. He tells me it’s business, but I don’t believe him. The other day, he got a call and left the house. So, I followed him, and he went to the Four Seasons. I think he’s meeting someone there and having sex.” She began to cry. “You know his reputation.”
I grabbed a tissue from the box and handed it to her. “Just because he went to a hotel doesn’t mean he’s secretly seeing someone.”
“He is. I can feel it.” She sobbed.
“He got a call early this morning, so I hid behind the wall and listened. He said he’d be there at two p.m.”
“Where? ”
“I don’t know. But he’s still home. You can follow him and find out. Please, Morgan. I need to know if he’s cheating on me.” She sobbed.
I stood from my chair, walked over, and placed my hand on her shoulder.
“I’ll find out what he’s doing.”
“Thank you.” She jumped up and hugged me.
A few moments after she left my office, Roman walked in.
“Hello, gorgeous.”
“I thought you were in court.” I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“The case was dismissed.” A wide grin crossed his lips.
“Congratulations, counselor.” I kissed him.
“Was that Love I saw walk out of here?”
“Yes.” I bit my bottom lip.
“Why was she here?”
“Well.” My nose scrunched. “I can’t say.” I turned and grabbed my purse.
“Morgan, why was Love here?”
“I promised her I wouldn’t tell.”
“But your promises not to tell doesn’t include not telling me. I’m your boyfriend who loves you so much, and you’re having my child. That makes me exempt.”
“Roman, please. I promised.”
“I don’t care. Why was she here?”
“Ugh. Fine. I have to follow your dad. She thinks he’s cheating.”
“He most likely is,” he said. “No surprise there.”
“She was sobbing, and her heart is broken. So, I told her I would follow him. He’s meeting with someone at two p.m., so I need to leave now, sit down the street from his house, and wait until he gets into his car and then follow him. ”
“I’m coming with you. We’ll have Ollie drive us.”
“Why do you have to make things so complicated?” I whined.
“Because it’s what men and boyfriends do.” A smirk crossed his lips. “Let’s go.”
Ollie parked down the street from Harrison’s house so he wouldn’t notice us when he got into his car. I pulled my binoculars from my bag and held them up.
“He’s getting into his car now,” I said.
“Ollie, follow him, but make sure he doesn’t see us.”
“He won’t, Roman,” Ollie said.
He pulled up to the valet of the Four Seasons Hotel, climbed out, and went inside. Roman and I quickly climbed out of the Escalade and followed him at a distance. He stopped at the elevator and pushed the button. Hiding behind one of the columns, I gave Roman my binoculars and told him to watch which floor the elevator stopped at.
“How do you know it’ll stop where he’s going?” Roman asked.
“He’s the only one in the elevator.”
“But it could stop on other floors to pick people up,” Roman said.
“Just text me with the floor number.” I sighed and took the stairwell.
Within seconds, my phone pinged, and a text from Roman came through.
“The elevator stopped on floor six.”
I was on the fourth floor, so I ran up two more floors and opened the door. Harrison knocked on the door of Suite 608 and stepped inside.
“Get up here! Sixth floor!” I texted Roman.
I stood in front of the elevators and waited for Roman to come up .
“He went into Suite 608,” I said when the doors opened.
“Okay. Let’s go see who he’s fucking now.” Roman sighed.
He pounded on the door of Suite 608.
“Jesus. Do you have to knock so hard?” I glanced at him.
“Yeah, I do. I’m pissed.”
An attractive woman in a short black dress opened the door.
“Where is he?” Roman commanded as he pushed open the door, and we stepped inside.
“Excuse me!” the woman shouted.
Harrison and an older gentleman were sitting at the table in the living area.
“Oh, shit,” I said.
Harrison turned around and stared at us.
“Roman? Morgan? What the hell are you two doing here? And how did you know I was here?”
“Why don’t you tell us what you’re doing here, Dad?” Roman cocked his head.
“I’m picking up Love’s engagement ring.”
“Engagement ring?” Roman’s brows furrowed.
“Oops,” I said.
“David, this is my son Roman and his girlfriend, Morgan. This is David. He’s a friend and one of the best diamond ring designers in the country. I flew him and his wife here to design a ring for Love. Now, tell me what the hell you’re doing here!”
“Well, Harrison. Here’s the thing.” I chewed my bottom lip. “Your future fiancée thinks you’re cheating on her. She followed you here one day and saw you enter the hotel. That was enough to convince her you’re cheating. She came to my office and asked me to follow you. ”
“She did what?” he shouted.
“Can you blame her, Dad? Especially with your history.”
“She said you’re always leaving the room to take secret phone calls,” I said.
“Because I’ve been talking to David and didn’t want her to know.”
“Newsflash, Harrison. It’s usually a red flag when you leave the room to take secret calls.”
“Shit,” he said. “I was going to wait until her birthday next month, but now I need to do it sooner than later. What do you think?” He held up the ring.
“It’s a beautiful ring, Dad. She’ll love it.”
“Very beautiful.” I smiled. “I’ll call her when I get to the office and tell her you were meeting a guy for lunch.”
“Thank you, Morgan. I’m just about finished here. You two wait outside, and I’ll walk out with you.”
We left the suite and waited in the hallway.
“We should probably tell him about the baby,” Roman said.
“Now?”
“Yeah. Why not?”
“If you want to.”
Harrison walked out of the suite, and we took the elevator to the lobby.
“Dad, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it, son?”
“Morgan is pregnant.”
Harrison stopped and stared at me. “You’re pregnant, sweetheart?”
“I am. You’re going to be a grandpa.”
“This is exciting news.” He grabbed me and hugged me tightly .
“Congratulations, son.” He hugged Roman.
“Thanks, Dad. We have to get back to the firm. Morgan will call Love.”
“I appreciate it. Gee, I can’t believe I’m going to be a grandpa.” He grinned.
