Chapter 28

Chapter

Twenty-Eight

MATTEO

“ I ’m assuming the reason we’re meeting here this morning instead of at the pizzeria is because of Wren?” Alessio asks the next day while sitting at the island in my kitchen.

“After that stunt she pulled last night, I’m not letting her out of my fucking sight.”

“I heard it was bad.” Alessio winces. “It was kind of funny to see Rob squirm when he filled us in. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that man so uncomfortable in his life.”

“Alright, ya fucks. There better be a damn good reason I’m not eating a pizza right now. I’m fucking starving,” Gio announces as he stalks into the kitchen, heading right to the fridge.

“There’s leftover lasagna.”

“So what happened?” he asks, mouth already full of lasagna .

“Wren flirted with other guys at work, including Rob, and Matteo lost it.” Alessio smirks as he fills Gio in.

“I didn’t lose it,” I grumble. Okay, I sort of lost it, but I’d never admit it to them.

“The way you’re getting worked up says otherwise.” Alessio laughs as he takes in my hands white-knuckling the edge of the counter.

“She getting under your skin?” Gio is just loving this. The bastard.

“No,” I grunt. “I just didn’t like seeing her rubbing up on a bunch of random guys that only want to get into her pants.”

“She’s getting under your skin.”

“Moving on.” I shoot a glare at both of my asshole brothers. “Cain’s on board to help any way we need now that he knows Wren is his Wren.”

Gio busts out laughing. “Dude, you can’t stand that he has any sort of claim over her. Holy shit, I am enjoying this.”

“Did I not just tell you that we’re moving on?” I snap.

“Does Cain think you’re together?” Alessio asks.

I groan as I lean my elbows against the island, slamming my face into my palms. They’re just not going to drop this. “Why is no one listening to a word that I’m fucking saying?”

“We’re just trying to get all of the facts straight so we can figure out who is after you and Wren.” Gio shrugs innocently.

“Or both of you are just fucking nosey.” I take a sip of my coffee and pause because both of them are staring at me. “What?”

“We’re waiting,” Gio says.

I sigh as I set my cup down. “He thinks we’re an item. He wasn’t too happy about it.”

“I’m sure you storming in there and basically kidnapping Wren didn’t have anything to do with it.” Alessio snorts .

“I don’t storm in anywhere.” They don’t need to know Cain caught us in the break room.

“Yeah, okay.” Alessio rolls his eyes.

“I’m assuming you didn’t correct him?” Gio asks. He busts out laughing all over again as I glare at him. “Man, you are so fucked.”

“Who’s fucked?” Wren asks, coming into the kitchen. This is the first time I’ve seen her today. Well, seen her awake. I snuck out of bed again when she was still asleep. I didn’t leave the house though, so baby steps. She looks fucking gorgeous. Her face is free of makeup, and her hair is up in one of those messy buns that girls always have it in. A smile tugs at the corner of my mouth as I take in her black and white checkered print scrunchie and sweatshirt that says, “Just because I’m awake doesn’t mean I’m ready to do things.” It’s so Wren.

I was testing her last night when we got home. There was a small part of me that needed to know how far I could push her. I thought she would fight me on the shirt, but she didn’t. Seeing her in my clothes helps ease this possessive feeling I’ve developed over her. It’s unsettling because I’m not a possessive guy. I don’t know what to do with these new feelings I’ve never experienced before. She makes me lose the control that I’ve spent most of my life perfecting.

Much to my mother’s dismay, I am not a relationship man. Never have been, and honest to God, I didn’t think it was even possible. Who has the time for dates and learning what someone likes and dislikes? In the past, I wouldn’t have given two fucks about where a girl works and lives. There’s just something about Wren that can bring a man to his knees trying to give her the world she deserves. And that scares the absolute shit out of me.

“No one.” I shoot my brothers a look .

“How are you this morning, beautiful?” Gio asks. “You look refreshed.”

Wren’s cheeks flush as her eyes dart to me accusingly. “I’m fine, thanks. I finally got some sleep.” Don’t worry, tesoro . I didn’t tell them how well you take my cock. “Am I okay to go for a run, or do I need to have another babysitter?” she asks with an eye roll.

“I’ll go with you,” I reply, wishing I could burn Gio alive with my eyes as he snorts. Alessio covers his smirk by taking a sip of coffee. “I just need to change.”

“You’re going to go running?” Wren asks as she raises her eyebrows.

“You’re not the only one in the world that works out, Wren,” I say, tone bored.

“Let me go change and get in my run vibe. Then we’ll go.”

“Run vibe?” Do I even want to know what that is?

“Run vibe. I need to listen to some songs to get in the right mindset. Running is a mental game, dude.” She’s looking at me like I’m insane for not knowing what a fucking run vibe is.

“Alright, go get in your… whatever, and I’ll be ready to go by the time you’re done.”

“Don’t drink too much more of that.” Wren nods to my coffee cup as she leaves the kitchen. “The runner shits are a real thing. Pairing that with coffee is just asking for an explosion.”

I don’t even know what the fuck to say to that, so I don’t. Instead, I watch her sweet ass leave as I finish the rest of my coffee, setting the cup in the sink.

“She’s right. I saw on the internet that during a marathon someone caught a runner shitting in their yard. But also, you’re so fucked,” Gio says once Wren is out of earshot.

“Wren’s different.” I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone quite like her. I never know what I’m going to get out of her next. As much as she frustrates the ever-living hell out of me, I love it. I love that she keeps me on my toes. Was I ready to kill her last night? Yeah. But as mad as I was, I had the best sex of my life right after. And if that’s what I have to look forward to with Wren, then sign me up.

“Well, that’s obvious. You’re different with her. It’s a good look on you,” Alessio says, setting his cup in the sink as well. “We’re out of here.”

Maybe Alessio is right. I can’t remember the last time I’ve smiled this much. The only issue is convincing Wren that it’s a good look on her too.
