Chapter 24

Celeste sat cross-legged on the dewy grass, brow furrowed in concentration as she studied the ancient spell book laid out before her. The faintest hint of lavender wafted on the breeze, mingling with the earthier scents of sage and rosemary. Celeste inhaled deeply, letting the aromatic blend soothe her nerves.

Around her, the others formed a loose circle, radiating calm support. Jake and Calvin murmured quietly as they double-checked the carefully assembled ring of rocks, herbs, and crystals encircling Sofie”s lumiscope and Maynard’s stones.

Morgan knelt nearby, deftly weaving stems of rue and agrimony into fragrant smudge sticks. The herbs rustled, their leaves saturated with celestial energy.

At the edge of the garden, Luke kept watch, vigilant and ready to spring into action at the first sign of trouble. Though his stance was relaxed, tension thrummed through his muscular frame.

Morgan squeezed Celeste”s shoulder reassuringly before moving to help Mateo and Jolene prepare a batch of strengthening elixir. The pungent, earthy aroma of burdock and dandelion wafted from their makeshift workstation.

Johanna stood serenely apart from the activity, her face creased with worry as the sun climbed higher in the sky.

Celeste took a steadying breath and resumed her study of the ancient text, murmuring the lyrical words under her breath. She had to get this right. The fate of Noquitt rested on drawing Sofie and Maynard together.

As she rehearsed the invocation, a flash of white at the corner of her eye drew her attention. Belladonna prowled the garden”s edge, back arched and fur bristling. The cat”s movements radiated anxiety as she paused to sniff the herb-heavy air. Her eyes narrowed to vivid blue slits.

With a delicate hop, Belladonna leapt lightly onto the weathered table beside Celeste, tail twitching as she eyed the open spell book. Tentatively, she reached out a white paw to pat the aged parchment, as if tapping out a feline beat of encouragement.

Celeste smiled softly at the cat”s gesture, heart swelling with love for her intuitive companion.

Celeste took a deep, centering breath, steadying her nerves as she prepared to begin the incantation. She could feel the eyes of her friends and family upon her, their gazes filled with a mixture of hope and apprehension.

Closing her eyes, Celeste let the words flow, ancient syllables rolling lyrically off her tongue. Her voice was hushed yet strong, infused with power. The flames of the candles seemed to dance and sway in response as if moved by an unseen wind.

As Celeste continued the chant, she sensed a shift in the energies around her. The herbs and crystals of the circle hummed, resonating with her invocation. Even the plants of the garden stirred, leaves and stems bending subtly toward the heart of the ring in which she sat.

Her companions watched in awed silence, hardly daring to breathe for fear of disrupting the delicate magic at work. Jake and Cal exchanged an incredulous look, while Mateo”s eyes were narrowed in concentration as he sought to analyze the forces being called forth.

Johanna observed calmly, though her hands were clasped before her in wordless hope and encouragement. Luke remained alert, prepared to act if any threat arose.

The power continued to build as Celeste wove her spell, binding the mystical elements together in anticipation of drawing forth Sofie and Maynard. She could feel the energy thrumming through her veins, at once exhilarating and terrifying in its sheer intensity.

Belladonna paced the perimeter, her white fur standing on end from the static charge in the air. Yet even the watchful feline seemed content to let the magic run its course.

Celeste realized she was nearing the invocation”s crux, at which point she would call the feuding siblings by name, beseeching their presences. Her pulse quickened, and she took a final centering breath, drawing on the strength of her family and friends surrounding her.

As the final syllables left her lips, a sudden wind gusted through the garden, swirling leaves and petals into the air. The candle flames surged wildly before extinguishing in wisps of smoke.

Everyone was silent as the intense energy summoned by the spell dissipated.

Finally, Jolene spoke up. ”Is that it? Did it work? When will we see them?”

Celeste shrugged. ”I think it worked, but I”m not sure when we will see them.”

”So what do we do now?” Jake asked.

Celeste turned to him. ”Now, we wait.”
