Paxton #2

“Nah, but Jo said he started dating this chick named Dawn and how many women do you know with a name like that? This world getting smaller and smaller.”

We made it to the location my mother wanted her party to be held at and made our way inside. She was in the middle of a discussion with a gorgeous brownskin woman. If she was the Dawn that my brother was fooling with, then he chose nicely.

I walked over and interrupted their conversation giving my mother the biggest hug. The woman stepped back holding a smile on her face not minding the interruption. She waited patiently until she was spoken to.

“I love you son, but you know I raised you better than that. Now apologize.” My mother slapped my chest, and I did like she asked.

Turning around, I said, “I’m sorry. I’m Paxton, and you are?”

“Dawn Sullivan, and you’re fine. I don’t mind. I’ve heard great things about you from your mother. She speaks highly of you.”

“She’s only speaking highly of me because I’m cutting the checks.” She giggled and showed a pearly smile. Josiaha caught a nice one.

“Well, so far, I was speaking with her about her vision and her budget. Does she have one?” I shook my head from side to side. “Are you sure? I can get a little crazy when the budget is open.”

“Get as crazy as you need to. This her fiftieth and she deserves it. Do whatever you need to, to make this memorable for her. Just stay in contact with her please. She needs to approve everything. I care about her happiness and vision, not yours… respectfully.”

“Oh, I understand completely. I will have one of my good friends assist me with this. She should be showing any minute now. If I ever get too busy, she will be able to reach out to you and discuss things with you as well Mrs. Hughes.”

“That’s fine by me darling.”

I walked off and looked around. The venue was huge, and I knew my mother. She was going to utilize this entire room. She flexed worse than Patience did. However, she every right to. I watched her and my father struggle to make sure we were comfortable. I granted them whatever their hearts desired.

“Will smoking be allowed?” I questioned cause I planned on putting something in the air during the bash.

“Yes. I checked with the venue manager. There will be a smoking section near the left side of the room and air purifiers throughout the room, so the smoke won’t circulate too much. Your mother did voice that she had a few friends and family that smoked.”

I nodded and continued to create my own vision of the party. I was ready to have a good time. Her birthday was approaching, and I was ready to see how this would all play out.

“Pax?”

Her voice sent chills throughout my body.

Hearing her in person, was something different from hearing her over the phone.

When my name left her tongue, I couldn’t help but envision her legs behind her head and me delivering long strokes.

That was the only time she ever said it.

However, the bullshit she pulled earlier, was still fresh.

“Yani.”

“What are you doing here? I thought you were—”

“On a date? Yeah, he was. I’m Patience, his sister. You must be the woman that hung up on him.” She was by my side quicker than I could blink extending her hand.

“Nice to meet you, Patience. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Really? I wish I could say the same.” Patience was on defense mode. She didn’t play about me and the shit Yani pulled earlier rubbed us both the wrong way.

Yani looked at me, and I stood with my hands in my pockets.

We spent a week together and I was still sorting my own feelings out.

I hope she didn’t think I would run and tell what we indulged in to anyone that would listen.

That wasn’t my style and when I brought you up to family that meant I was sure about you. I wasn’t there yet.

She cleared her throat and put on a fake smile. “It’s alright. I’m sure you will soon.”

I chuckled and redirected the conversation. “You asked what I was doing here. My mother is Dawn’s client and I’m paying for it all. She wants me here for comfortability.”

“Mrs. Henrietta is your mother? This world couldn’t get any smaller could it?”

“How do you know our mother?” Patience questioned. She stole it right off my tongue.

“She owns Hen’s and I visit quite often. She knows me personally at this point.”

We all walked toward Dawn and my mother to get a better understanding of what was just revealed. Her knowing my mother first and developing a bond without me being the middle man was giving me a clearer sight when it came to Yani. The doubt regarding her was slowly fading.

“Oh you made it. Mrs. Hughes this is my friend—”

“Yani! Baby girl what are you doing here?”

They hugged, and I couldn’t help but smile at their interaction. It was clear that they were well acquainted. I fucked with that more than she knew.

“I’m here to help Dawn with what seems like your party. I’m so happy that it’s yours. You have been raving about this party for the longest. I really hope we can do you justice,” Yani said with the biggest smile gracing her face.

“It’s funny how life works,” my mother voiced, and I couldn’t agree with her more.
