Odin

I growl against Serena’s lips as I hear Valerie’s voice. Taking a few deep breaths, I pull away from Serena and look over her head at Valerie storming towards us. When will this girl get the hint that we aren’t interested?

When Midas told us what Valerie had said to him, we all agreed to make her life as miserable as possible. I still can’t believe she had the balls to do what she did, but that doesn’t matter anymore. She threatened my girl. That is a punishable offense to me.

I am just more amazed after the public humiliation we gave her in the cafeteria the other day, she still dares to act the way she does. Actually… I’m not. The bitch is dense and that will never change.

Midas and Zeus walk up next to us, the three of us surrounding Serena. Her guards, who would do anything to protect her, even if it is just against a high school bully. Valerie looks like she is ready to blow, which brings an obnoxious smile to my face.

I kiss Serena on the forehead. “Why don’t you go inside and find Evie? We will deal with Valerie.” I whisper.

Serena looks up at me before glancing at Midas and Zeus. They each give her a nod, encouraging her to let us handle the situation. Serena doesn’t look convinced. You can see it in her eyes. She is worried that we will leave her for Valerie again, but that will never happen.

I am still pissed at Midas for making the decision he made without consulting us, but I get it. Valerie made threats against Serena, and he did the only thing he could to protect her. He cares for Serena, even if he doesn’t know how to say it. Of course, that all went to shit, and we decided together to take our chances.

Midas places his hand on Serena’s waist and pulls her into him, holding her close. He grips her chin, tipping her head up to look at him, and kisses her. His lips dancing with hers. She eagerly lets him take control of her body.

I never thought I would get turned on watching my best friend kiss my girl, but seeing the two of them together makes my pants tight. I have to not so subtly rearrange my junk. Valerie’s eyes instantly catch the movement, making her fume even more than she was before.

I can’t help but be a dick and give her a wink.

Midas pulls away and smiles at Serena. I don’t think I have ever seen him smile like that. So happy and full. He has never felt that way before. I see something else in his eyes. Something I can’t place. I don’t like that.

I peek at Zeus. He looks happy. That’s not something I thought I would ever see again. After his accident, he became so robotic in life. Watching him transform from the sweet, outgoing kid he was to nothing was heartbreaking. I felt like I lost my best friend. Even though I didn’t, and he still hung around us and tried to participate, it wasn’t an easy adjustment for any of us. We all learned to adapt to our new reality, and in a way, it made us stronger.

I can’t lie and say I never wondered how things would have been different if that never happened.

Serena is changing him.

She is changing all of us.

Zeus kisses her cheek before nudging her towards the school. She starts walking away, looking over her shoulder at us. I give her a reassuring smile before she turns around and walks past Valerie and through the double front doors.

Once the door closed behind her, cutting her off from us, I turned towards the annoying gnat of a person, that is Valerie. She stands before us, huffing and puffing like a crazy dragon lady. I swear I can see the steam coming out of her nose and ears. She has her hands on her popped-out hip. Her fake bleached blonde hair looks like wheat that has been drying out in the sun for weeks. Her makeup is thick and cakey, making her look fifteen years older than she is. Her overly pouty, bright pink lips remind me of a fish. Correction, that would be an insult to fish. At least they are cute.

How the hell did we ever find this girl somewhat attractive before?

I glance at Midas out of the corner of my eye, watching to see what he will do. He and Valerie are having a little showdown between the two of them, glaring daggers at one another. It’s almost as if Zeus and I aren’t even here. Not that I mind. She is invisible to me, and I would like to stay invisible to her.

Ha! Fat chance of that.

Hush, little voice.

Valerie has always been a pain in the ass, even before Serena moved to town. I can remember this one time in middle school when Valerie started a rumor about a girl in our class. Couldn’t tell you what the rumors were anymore, but the bullying that followed caused that girl to have a mental breakdown. Her parents had to eventually take her out of school. Last I heard, her family moved out of town and to a different state.

We already discussed that we needed to get rid of Valerie. Zeus and I tried to discuss some ideas with Midas, but he claimed to already have an idea and that we should let him handle the situation.

I trust Midas with my life, and I know when he says he has a plan, he has a plan. Whatever is up his sleeve will be devious, no doubt about that. I may be known as the scary one, but Midas is the truly terrifying one out of the three of us.

Midas finally breaks his staring contest with Valerie and takes something out of his pocket. I can’t see what’s in his hand. He reaches his hand out, waiting for Valerie to take it from him. She looks expectantly at his hand and eagerly grabs it from him. The second it hits her palm, she shrieks and drops it. Tears start welling in her eyes as terror coats her entire face. I look down at the discarded item, curious what it is. A little brown furry paw is lying on the ground.

My eyebrows shoot up, and I swivel my eyes to Midas. An evil smile is plastered across his lips. His eyes never leave her, and he steps towards her. Valerie keeps staring at the paw on the ground, and tears are flowing freely down her cheeks.

“I thought I told you that if I ever see you near Serena again, you will regret it.” Midas starts, his voice nothing more than a whisper, but still deadly. “Next time, it won’t just be your dog I gut.”

Valerie gasps. Her dog, Scruffy, a toy poodle, is her best and probably only true friend in the world. She loves that dog more than anything, even if she isn’t the best pet owner in the world.

I keep myself as neutral as possible, but inside I am seething. I knew the bastard was crazy, but I had no idea he was the crazy one. Killing her dog is a new low, even for him. I mean, the poor creature was defenseless. Anger boils through me, but I can’t let her see that.

Valerie finally looks up at him, nods her head, and runs away. She doesn’t go back to school. Instead, running to her car and driving away. I wait until her car is out of sight before turning to Midas.

I finally let the anger I am feeling show on my face. Before I can say anything, Midas raises his hand, effectively telling me to keep quiet.

“I didn’t actually gut her dog. I did kidnap it, though, and gave it to a kid who deserves it more than she does.” He explains.

“Then where the fuck did you get a dog’s paw?” Zeus asks. The same question is swirling around in my head.

“I have had this plan for a while. Phil, from the vet clinic, called me this morning to let me know that there was a dog the same breed as Valerie’s that was put down and they were preparing to send it to get cremated. I paid him a hundred bucks to let me take the paw.” Midas shrugs his shoulders like it is nothing.

I want to say something, anything. No words come to mind, only laughter. Like keel over, sides hurting, can’t breathe, laughing. He really had us going with that stunt. I clap him on the back as I control my laughing.

I wasn’t kidding when I said he was the most terrifying bastard out of the three of us, but he would never hurt someone or something that didn’t deserve it.

Midas gives me a big smile, knowing we accomplished what we needed to, and the three of us walk into school. We continue talking and chuckling while we walk down the halls towards Serena’s locker, hoping she is still there.

Thankfully, she is. She and Evie are standing by her locker chatting. We stopped and just watched her for a second. Serena takes my breath away every time I see her.

I never imagined finding someone like her. I never imagined finding anyone. I want to get on my knees daily and thank God, or the devil, for bringing her to me. To us. For fixing the cracks in us that he chose to ignore for so long.

Midas calls her angel, and she is. A being sent to us to remind us that there is more to life than what we know. To me, she will always be my princess until the day we wed and she becomes my queen.

My eyes never seem to be able to leave her when she is in the room. Like a magnet, I am drawn to her. Evie says something that makes me laugh and smile. A sight I want to see for the rest of my life.

I was so worried after the shooting. Terrified that she wouldn’t be able to find joy in life for a while. I spent every day after school at her house, seeing the haunted look in her eyes. Fear that it will happen again. She reminded me of when she first moved here. Scared. Always looking over her shoulder. So unsure about herself.

I don’t know the reasons behind her fear in the beginning, but they don’t matter. Well, they do. Anything that makes my princess upset matters to me. All I mean is that she overcame the obstacles that haunted her before, and she will do it again. Life will eventually go on, and that bastard will be found. I plan on playing judge, jury, and executioner when that time comes.

I can’t stop myself. My feet start moving before I can register that they are. I grab her around her waist and pull her in close to me. She lets out a little squeak as I move her and quickly melts into me.

I groan as the bell rings, not ready to let go of my girl yet. Serena turns into my arms and looks up at me. I have never seen someone so beautiful before. Her blonde hair is cascading down past her shoulders. She isn’t wearing any makeup, but she doesn’t need it. She is stunning. Even in sweats, she takes my breath away. She could be wearing a black garbage bag, and I would still think she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

I tilt down and gently place my lips against hers. She instantly opens her lips to me, allowing my tongue to dance with hers. A small moan escapes her, making me groan. I love the noises she makes. I could listen to them forever and never get tired of them. It’s becoming a craving of mine. I need them. A drug I never want to stop taking.

Slowly, she pulls away from me, ending the kiss before I want it to. I watch her as she and Evie walk down the hall to their first class. I know I have class with her, and I easily could join her, but I love to watch her ass as she walks away.

Finally, it’s the end of the day. It feels like it has been dragging on forever. Classes have been boring beyond belief. The only thing that makes the school worth coming to is Serena. Only having a couple of classes with her during the day sucks, but I do treasure the moments together.

I rarely pay attention in class to begin with. I have never been a model student. The entirety of my time in high school, I have just barely passed my classes. It’s not like I plan on pursuing any more education after this.

Now that I share classes with her, I pay even less attention. It doesn’t matter what she is doing, she captivates the entirety of my attention.

Serena is a straight-A student. I guess opposites do attract. As much as I want better grades, I have never seen the point. My life has been mapped out for me since I was born. Though studying would be worth it if she were my sexy tutor.

Oh, the fantasies that popped into my head. Ok. Ok. I need to make these a reality now.

I grabbed Serena’s hand as we walked out of math class. Mr. Labeau wasn’t in today, not that I am complaining at all. I still don’t know what his deal is, but there is something shady about it. As much as we wanted to look into him, he seemed harmless enough, not warranting a background check. For now.

You never know what skeletons you will find in someone’s background that could be used as good blackmail. It's always good to have some dirt on someone, just in case they try anything. Another life lesson brought to you by my sadistic father.

Midas and Zeus are walking behind us, watching everyone as we walk through the halls. I glanced down at my hand, entwined with Serena’s, and the smile on her face. Happiness fills me knowing that she is finally ours and Valerie won’t be a problem anymore.

We wait while Serena grabs her bag from her locker, and we walk out of the school towards the parking lot. The sun is bright and shining. The air is still warm, even for November. It’s a perfect fall afternoon, and the only thing I want to do is spend it with her.

The four of us are chatting and laughing at the shit that happened at school today. Serena even commented that she was surprised not to see Valerie again after this morning. Zeus, Midas, and I shared a look, trying to act surprised. All I wanted to do was laugh and tell Serena what happened, but I had no idea how she would react. We just got her, and I don’t want to do anything that might scare her off.

Instead, we play it off as if we have no idea what happened to her. Some things are better off as secrets. Maybe one day we can tell her everything, but not until we are positive that she won’t leave.

She should know what we are and what we do, or at least some of it. I hear honesty is the best thing for a relationship, another life lesson from Pops. I want to be honest with her, but at the right time.

Everyone has secrets. We keep them close to us, to protect ourselves and others. That’s what I am doing. I can’t do anything that will make her leave.

We make it to her car, and the smile on my lips instantly falls.

Fuck. Not what I wanted to see right now.
