CHAPTER FOURTEEN OPAL

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

OPAL

The echo of his voice—wild and possessive lingers in my mind. “She’s mine! MINE!” Even now, despite the circumstance, a wetness pools between my thighs. It shouldn’t, but I can’t help it.

I can’t believe this is real. I have stepped into one of those dark, twisted romance novels I devour late at night.

And I’ve fallen for the main character, regardless of his confession, admitting his sickly-sweet tendencies.

My phone buzzes on the coffee table, startling me. I glance at the screen—work. Shit. I completely forgot I was supposed to be there. I swipe to answer, my voice rushed.

“Hello?”

“Opal? Everything okay? You were supposed to be in at ten remember? It’s 10:45”

Guilt floods me. “Oh my god Alex, I’m so sorry. I—I can’t come in today.”

There’s a pause. “Opal, are you okay?”

I bite my lip, eyes flicking to the man still sitting in front of me. “Yeah, I’m fine. I’ll tell you about it later, okay?”

“Text me, okay? And take care of yourself.”

“Yeah, Alex I will.”

I hang up, setting the phone down, my hands trembling as everything settles in my thoughts.

It was him all this time.

My cheeks flush at the thought. Kellan, fucking and caring for me this whole time. A customer. Following me. Watching me.

I open my phone to send a quick text to Alex.

The masked man. Kellan. They’re the same person. This whole time. Mason showed up and Kellan handled it. Let’s get dinner tomorrow, love ya.

Omg Opal!!!! And okaayyyy.

“I need to go to the hardware store,” he says gently, his eyes flickering toward the splintered remains of my doorframe.

I nod, though my stomach sinks.

But then he adds, “you’re coming with me.”

A grin spreads across my face. “Okay,” I say a little too eagerly.

I slip my boots on as Kellan holds the broken door open for me.

As we step into the chilly air, I realize—maybe love doesn’t always start with flowers and candlelight.

Maybe sometimes, it starts with a pumpkin spice latte and a man who refuses to let me walk alone in this world.
