"Hey Kayde, Chief would like to speak to you."
I left my desk heading to my superior's office. I placed my hand on the door ready to knock when it flew open.
"Detective Williams, please come in." Senior Detective Reynolds motioned I walk in. Taking in his office I watched him pour himself a cup of coffee.
"Have a seat Williams."
Quietly I did as I was told, surprised by his offer.
The Senior never offered a seat unless he wanted to discuss something important.
Sipping his coffee he sat down on his chair his gaze steady when it met mine.
There were so many scenarios running through my head composing myself under his intense stare.
Did he know? Of course not? Nobody knew?
"Kayde I am so proud of you son. The bug you placed in Ivan's office led us to arrest one of the biggest gang leaders in the city.
Even though Scorpion was not caught. The second most organized crime group in the city is now under thorough investigation.
Even then I feel like the man who we arrested was working under someone.
He refuses to say who it is but with time we shall get every information out of him. "
I took the coffee he poured for me trying not to be rude. "Would you like me to interrogate him?" I ask.
"No Williams, let Suarez handle him. I have something else for you to do.
I have two reasons for you being here this evening.
The first is related to Ivan Bratan's investigation.
I want you to earn his trust. The case for the prime Minister's daughter looks more complicated each day.
There were some leads suggesting he was having an affair with the girl.
I want you to dig deep regarding this angle.
I want him arrested by the end of the week.
Secondly, your father requested I relieve you of your duties early, I believe you have a dinner to attend. "
His words played in my mind both requests seemingly suspicious. Putting two and two together this had something to do with Suarez. Was he really capable of setting me up just to prove a point?
"Is there something wrong with any of my requests, you don't look pleased," he noted.
I wasn't pleased with what he asked me to do since the first request was a doubt Suarez must have placed in him.
The second request was my father ensuring I didn't skip the dinner to hear whatever news he had to say.
"No sir, I just feel rather tired but I am really looking forward to ensuring Ivan Bratan is brought into justice if he is involved with the case," I obliged.
Nodding in agreement he weighed my words.
I could tell by the silence in the room he wasn't satisfied with my answer.
My statement was what I wanted to say. If indeed Ivan was involved with the abduction of Mariya Kuznetov he would be brought to justice, if not then the perpetrators who were would be brought to justice.
"I trust your judgement Williams. Now go home don't keep your old man waiting."
I stared at the black liquid in his small tea cup. I noticed how the Senior had a thing for fine Chinaware I made a mental note to get him some for his birthday. Without a word I chugged the coffee in the cup and placed it back on his mahogany desk.
"Thank you for the coffee sir," I said.
"Anytime son," he replied.
I felt a tug at my heart and I smiled at his words. He had been more of a father figure compared to my dad. I walked out of his office about to open the door when I heard him say, "Take care son."
Packing everything in my briefcase I couldn't help wondering what my father wanted.
Valentina had mentioned the dinner before I left for work.
I remember telling her I had a very long day I probably won't make it home until midnight.
By the turn of events it seems she had told my father and he called detective Reynolds.
The drive home was the longest in my life. I dreaded every single minute of it knowing it was time to make the decision that would make things change.
"Kayde darling you are here I thought you still had work to do," my mum said. I took a seat next to her placing a kiss on her forehead. "Work isn't more important than family," I said.
My father sat across the table watching the interaction. Valentina sat next to him her smile wide. "How was your day?" She asked.
"It was well, we got new angles in the case I'm currently working on but we still need a lot of evidence to catch the mastermind. How was your day?" I ask.
Her eyes turned in excitement a mixture of mirth. "It was really good but not exciting compared to yours," she answered. The dinner was rather silent not what I had expected my father barely acknowledged my presence and I did my best to do the same.
I wondered how he and Reynolds were friends when he was a cold calculating man whose love only came out in leaks.
"There is something I have to announce," he said.
There it was the calm before the storm. Three heads turned to pay attention to what he had to say.
"I think Kayde and Valentina have been engaged for quite a long time I think it's time they finally get married.
I have already made arrangements with Valentina' s father and he shares the same sentiments," he announced.
My throat tightened at his announcement, my voice got stuck and my mother moved her hand and put it on top of mine.
I could feel the anger brewing in my heart and I wanted to lash out.
Why did he have a right to make life changing decisions for my life without my consent.
I knew whatever I said would make things worse and he would end up thrashing me.
Remaining composed I put a smile on my face stood up and went to where Val was pulling her for a hug.
"You'll choose the date you want us to get married and we can have the wedding as soon as next month if possible," I said. Whatever I said must have left everyone shocked and uneasy. The only way to beat my father was agreeing to whatever he had to say I would find a way out of the situation.
