Chapter 36
The engine roared to life and I drove out of my mansion.
I tried to ignore the silence in the car when detective rabbit kept sneezing.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "Just keep driving," he muttered.
I did my best to focus on the road ahead.
We had a lead outside the city on the prime minister's involvement with Mariya's kidnapping and the trafficking ring.
Ever since the visit at the hospital the detective didn't mention anything.
"Do you love her?" he interrogated.
"She is just a child," I affirmed. How dare he still think of Mariya and I in such a manner. I would have told him the truth but the time wasn't right yet.
"I saw how she looks at you. You know I'm not a fool because you look at her the exact same way," he declared.
How foolish that he couldn't spot the difference between devotion and affection.
Mariya was my blood she cared for me and I for her yet all he let himself see in his jealous state was the wrong thing.
For a detective he isn't very sharp on matters of the heart.
All he knows is fighting crime and getting justice.
"Do you have feelings for me detective?" I inquired quietly.
His head snapped towards me his nose red from the many times he had blown it.
His blue eyes glittered I couldn't tell if it was unshed tears from the question or from the cold he had.
His blonde hair shining under the city lights every time we passed one. He was gorgeous I wish he knew that.
"I'm married..."
"It doesn't stop you from having feelings for someone else," I proclaimed.
He remained quiet his thoughts loud even as he sat silently by my side.
I knew the answer to the question I asked him.
If he had no feelings for me he would have immediately said no yet he didn't. He didn't answer my question meaning he hadn't come to terms with his feelings or he was being avoidant.
"Do you love him?" he questioned.
My mind went back to Vance Marchetti and I gripped the wheel tightly. Of course he woud think that. Kayde always had this weird deductions when it came to me. I wondered if it was because of his profession or he just found me too repulsive.
"Does it really matter detective?" I retaliated.
"It's a universal rule you can't answer a question with a question," he reckoned.
"If you know me well then you should know I don't abide by the rules Williams."
He squirmed in his seat when I turned to watch him my face a few inches from his.
"I don't like how you say my name," he replied meekly.
I laughed at his response my eyes still on him.
He was a man who acted like he could take everyone down if they got in his way yet he seemed like a deer caught in the headlights.
"Watch the road, remember you are driving," he reminded.
I turned to driving to relieve him of my proximity and recklessness.
For the rest of the four hours we didn't exchange words.
I let him have his moment because I knew the conversation was barely over.
The man who we were after was someone the detective's friend had traced.
We had to leave the city in order to find him.
He lived in seclusion away from prying eyes.
It kept me thinking what had made the prime ministerto leave this person alive.
Evidence was bad for the type of business we were in. He was a fool if he couldn't keep his trail clear.
"Ivan," he called his voice barely a whisper.
I turned to him his skin sweaty. I put my hand on his forehead to find it was hot. He seemed like he would pass out any moment.
"Detective hang in there. Let me take a detour to one of my places you don't look like you are in good shape to travel further," I suggested.
"Okay," he answered. No fighting, no witty comments and no attitude he was definitely feeling out of it.
I turned through a dirt trail that led deep into the woods.
The crisp forest air slipped in the window lowering the temperature of the car a few degrees.
I pulled up the windows turning on the heater making sure he wasn't getting cold.
His nose was glistening red than it had been minutes before.
He had stopped sneezing and his eyes had flattered close.
I touched his face smoothening his beautiful blonde hair from his face while also checking his temperature.
It was beyond me how he had gotten cold.
He must have been working all night or stressing about his recent marriage.
His marriage brought so much anguish to me I wish I could just say it to him that I wish he chose me over that woman who went to see the prime minister even after he had found the truth about them. He deserved better. I knew I could give him the world if he asked for it.
Vance meant nothing to me. It was all about keeping Mariya and Ramon safe yet I could get them all away and take the detective as my man. If he wanted me too.
After a five kilometer drive we got to my cabin in the woods. It was one of the properties I had purchased when I made my first millions. It was something to help me get away from everyone. Only Ramon knew of it yet he had never set foot there himself. I had also gotten him his own where he wanted.
Williams was special to me. Ramon knew it. He warned me that the man was my weakness he may end up being my downfall if I didn't find a way to reign in the emotions I felt for him.
I parked the car carrying him out and walking into my sanctuary.
"Welcome home detective," I whispered.
He turned in my arms but not waking up. It must have been because of his feverish state. His body fit right in my arms even as I walked up the stairs to tuck him in bed.
I laid him on the emerald silk sheets. Taking off his shoes, added a few pillows to make him comfortable. I found the med kit taking a few pills to cool down his fever and prevent a flu from taking over.
Sitting by the side of the bed I shook him gently.
"Kayde, here have this. It will help with the cold,"I murmured.
He woke up in a foggy state but complied with my request. After having the pills he laid down. I picked up the glass I had offered him about to go in the kitchen and make him something when his hand shot to mine.
"Don't leave," he requested.
My eyes met his and my stomach turned. He had this way of pulling me in with his vulnerability. I wanted to protect him and keep him safe.
"No detective, I can't," I replied.
"Please," he begged.
I reluctantly agreed to sit down and looked at him. His hair sprawled down on my green pillows accentuating the blonde hair. His eyes a stark different that made him so gorgeous. An extreme arctic blue that made me relive a beautiful winter.
"This is wrong," I repeated.
"Can we forget about Vance and Valentina. Let it just be me and you?" he breathed.
"I don't like these games detective. What do you want?" I asked.
"You," he said.
