Chapter 47

Vance was passed out in the bed his body sprawled out.

The sedative had taken longer than expected to knock him out.

I didn't know what I would have done if he hadn't become unconscious.

But I knew what he would have done if he found out I had tricked him.

He would have brought Kayde before my eyes and made sure I watched as he administered all kinds of torture to him.

He had dismissed all his men to a different section of the house while we got down to business. My mind was running differently

possibilities on what Romano was doing to the detective. Given Vance's previous demeanor he would never have predicted I would locate his father's house.

Tracing the most contacted number on his phone it led to a few miles from where Kayde's signal had gone off.

I sneaked out of his mansion avoiding any confrontation.

It would give them enough time to check if their boss was okay and once they found he was not.

It would be bye bye detective hello Vance is keeping me captive.

I wasted no time given the person who monitored their surveillance would notice I was leaving.

If after an hour or two Vance did not call for any of them they would check up on him and find out.

If I was lucky enough. With their training fifteen minutes or thirty minutes they would have discovered my ploy.

My thoughts went back to my cabin in the woods. The look in his eyes when he was no longer acting like the big bad wolf. He was a good man who never got approval from his father and given the character he had that is something that mattered to him.

The buzzing sound brought me back to the spectacle of a life I had.

The police were after me for my own sister's kidnapping and now the detective was missing.

Things were getting out of hand. The number that called was one I didn't recognize but given the situation it may be anyone and so I picked it.

A voice on the other end cleared, " Hello am I speaking to Mr Bratan?"

A familiar feeling washed all over me and I recognized who it was.

"Yes it is," I replied curtly.

"I'm calling in regards to Detective William. I wanted to confirm if you have been able to reach him lately. His cell is unreachable and I can't trace his location..."

I cut him off before he began rumbling other stupid things.

"Listen to me and listen very carefully Detective Luca Suarez. If a single hair on the detective's head goes missing. I'll make what they did to your entire family look like a carnival.

Don't waste my time pleading for me to find him when you are very much aware of who you colluded with to set him up."

There was silence then shuffling and sniffling. "Look man things weren't supposed to go the way they did but they did. It was supposed to be you not him. If there is any bit of humanity left in you please save him," he pleaded.

"What business do I have with Detective Williams that would make me risk my life to save his?"

His anger came in waves that radiated inside my car.

"How dare you? Do you know how much he cares about you? If I didn't know better I'd say he is in love with you and here you are dismissing him like nothing. All of you criminals are the same. Everything is yours for the taking and if it no longer serves you anymore you get rid of it," he accused.

"If that's the case I don't understand why you called me if you were aware of my criminal nature. Another thing, the detective is a married man. I have no business with entanglements that do not benefit me. As a criminal as you succinctly put it, I also have a reputation to uphold," I aggravated.

"Look Ivan, I wouldn't have called you if I knew you wouldn't help but if there is something you can do to save him please do," he said defeated.

"I'll see what I can do," I replied hanging up. He really had balls calling for help while he was the reason detective rabbit was in that predicament in the first place.

My focus went back to the road which had police check ins.

Bullocks. What a good day to be wanted by the law.

I slowed down the car waiting for the Mercedes that was in front of me to get checked.

I had two options wait till they figured out who I was and arrest me or speed past the check once they let the guy before me through.

I guess I'll pay a visit to the station once I get the detective out but in the meantime I had to do what needed to be done.

"Hey Stop! Stop! Stop that car!"

As luck would have it Romano Marchetti lived away from the city where traffic was not so bad.

Evading law enforcement was an easy fit.

Down the gravel road a few miles away was the tightest security measures I had seen in a very long time.

Marchetti must have had some pretty decent enemies to barricade his property the way he did.

Guns were pointed at me a knock on the window had me rolling it down.

"State your business!" a man with a thick Russian accent ordered.

"I'm here to see my father in law," bile rose at the mention of those words. He spoke something into his walkie talkie then pointed towards the entrance. Marchetti's mansion was a military base not a home. Every single corner was fortified making escape very difficult.

It seemed who ever managed to successfully come in. The chances of leaving were narrow. I stepped out of the car someone immediately frisking me for weapons. I did not fight them as they confiscated all my weapons and led me to the black double doors.

Kayde wait for me.
