Chapter 14

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Moira

Yesterday was a lot for everyone, but especially for Fiona and Teagan.

The way that Hamish McGregor talked to them was uncalled for.

I don’t care how many women came out to try and get money from him and his family.

They’re not like that and for him to assume they are?

Fuck that. I know that it really affected Callum.

We held each other in bed and I could feel him tossing and turning all night.

Like his body couldn’t relax enough to really fall asleep.

When we got up this morning, Callum was really quiet. He kissed me good morning, but I could tell that he was really stressed out. Today they’re going to call Colin.

“Is there anything I can do to help you before we head to the clubhouse?” I ask him.

“No. But thank you, Mo chridhe. Being here with me is helping me. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I just wish I could take this pain and frustration away for you.”

“It’s okay. We’ll all get through this, just like everything else we’ve gotten through.”

I hug him tight. I still wish there was more I could do.

We head to the clubhouse, they all agreed that they would call Colin on speaker.

Enea and the rest of the council will be here too.

Each member of the council is well known in the mafia world.

The idea is that we’re showing that Fiona and Teagan have the support of Lake Renegade.

When we get to the clubhouse, we can smell the food being cooked. Rosaura, Graínne and Caitríona are making breakfast and it smells delicious.

“Do you want to eat and then call? It’s already four pm in Scotland.” Enea asks Fiona and Teagan.

“I think I’d like to call and get this over with. I don’t have the best feeling about this.” Fiona sighs.

“I agree. Is that okay? I know you’re all probably hungry.” Teagan asks.

“No, that’s fine. We can even eat and talk. None of us will talk unless you need us to. I’ll initiate the call since I’m pretty sure he knows who I am. But after that, it’s all you two.”

We all grab a plate and sit down. Callum and I sit on one side of Fiona, Teagan is on her other side.

We’re all holding hands. I can feel Fiona shaking.

I can’t even imagine how I would feel if I was in her position.

I really hope that Colin tells all of them what they need to hear.

Because Hamish wasn’t very nice and I’m still pissed about how he talked to them.

Callum

Enea makes the phone call and tells the person on the line who he is and that he’s going to be putting the conversation on speaker. After what I’m guessing is the person giving permission, he connects the phone to the speaker box.

“Okay Colin, you’re on speaker. I’m not sure if you spoke to your father yesterday or today. But we spoke to him yesterday.”

“No, I haven’t talked to him in a few days.”

My mam gasps softly.

“Well we have a situation and while we’re not looking for anything specific, we are looking for closure.”

“Okay, closure for what?”

“Do you remember me, Colin? Or should I call you Gordon.”

There’s silence on the phone.

“Are you still there?” Enea asks.

“Aye. Is this a joke?”

“No, do you really think I would be doing this as a joke?”

“Then how do you know Fiona?”

“He knows me because we’ve become family.”

“And he knows me now.”

“Fuck me.” Colin sighs.

“We just need to know why you left us.” Teagan says angrily.

“Well I left you because my brother kicked me out of County Clare. And there was no way for me to come back.”

“So you couldn’t have called?”

“Nope.”

“And me? What about me and Callum? And don’t tell me that you were kicked out of North Ayrshire too. Because we know the deal.”

“I had my reasons. And I don’t owe you or Teagan any explanations.”

“The hell you don’t. You’re a fecking coward.” Cillian says.

“Sure. I might be a coward. But I’m okay with all of my decisions.”

How can he even say that, how do you have a child with someone and not give a shit about them? I could never do that to anyone.

“So you don’t care about any of us?” I ask.

“Nope. Haven’t even thought about you in years.”

My mam is looking down at her hands and I can feel the hurt coming off of her. Maybe Cillian and I need to pay a visit to Colin. Talk to him with his wife there.

“I wonder if you’d be saying this with your wife around. I hear she might not like what we have to say.”

“Go ahead. You don’t even live in Scotland anymore. And how do I even know either of you are my sons? I have eight of them here with me. Them I know are mine, you two? I don’t know if you are. Your mams weren’t exactly faithful.”

“Faithful? You want to talk about being faithful? You’re a piece of shite.”

“Yeah? Well then why are we still talking?”

“First of all, I understand you think you’re allowed to talk to women this way, but you’re not. Now either you can be civil and talk to Fiona and Teagan or I’ll deal with your father instead.” Enea says calmly to Colin.

“Then maybe you need to talk to my faither. He’ll never believe you anyway.”

Colin’s voice is wavering a little.

“You should know that as we speak, his blood is on it’s way to me so that we can run DNA tests. And he’ll know that Callum and Cillian are his grandsons. And all of this will come out. So again, either you deal with us now or later. Either way is fine with me.”

“Fine. I left Teagan for the reason I already said. As for Fiona? Ainsley was getting suspicious the last year. At the beginning, I spent one week with Teagan, one with Fiona and two with Ainsley. When I left Teagan, I spent two weeks with Fiona and two with Ainsley. But one day Ainsley asked why I was away for two weeks when I only had the North Ayrshire area besides our area of North-West Highlands. She told me that I had a choice and I chose her. We already had three kids…”

“And? I had Callum. How could you leave either of your sons?” my mam asks.

“You make it sound like I did it easily. But I didn’t.”

“Then why not call and say you had to leave? Instead of just leaving.”

“Because I did love you both and saying goodbye was harder than walking away.”

“Oh boo fucking hoo. Are we supposed to feel sorry for you? That you fucked around and got caught?”

“Oh I didn’t get caught. Ainsley doesn’t know about any of you.”

“She will soon.” I laugh.

“Well maybe it’s time. And just so you know, I lied. I’ve kept tabs on all of you since the day I left. I’m very proud of Callum and Cillian. We’ll talk again soon.”

Colin hangs up and I hug my mam. She’s shaking and I want to kill Colin. Maybe I never should’ve brought all this into our lives.

“I’m sorry, mam.”

“For what? You did nothing wrong. I’m sorry I chose so poorly with Colin. I wish I had found someone better for you. But then I might not have you. So at the same time, I have to thank him for you.”

“I had you, I didn’t need anyone else. I love you, mam. I never hated my life. I loved every minute of it.”
