Chapter 5 #2
Callum extracted the encrypted storage drive from the internal pocket of his jacket, rotating the small component once between his fingers before inserting it into the primary port.
Emilie had assured him the software would compromise whatever data architecture the Monroes utilized, copying every hidden ledger while substituting a fabricated access log that left no indication of exploitation.
He trusted her assessment implicitly because she maintained an absolute respect for technical competence. If she verified the drive would bypass Monroe security protocols, the device would function as intended.
The terminal initiated a sequence of layered authentication menus. Lawson leaned forward, his right shoulder brushing the transparent partition as he narrowed his eyes against the text.
The projected interface displayed translucent panels across the desk surface, casting account structures and permission maps across his features in a cold blue hue.
He appeared physically exhausted yet remarkably focused, suggesting his intellectual capacity would outlast his physical endurance.
“The sequence is nearing completion,” Callum observed.
Lawson emitted a faint sound that indicated agreement, extending his hands from his sleeves and positioning his fingers above the touch-sensitive panel.
His hands trembled with an intensity that Callum registered through the shared vibration of the workstation. Then, Lawson initiated the inputs.
The initial commands occurred with a velocity that precluded ordinary observation, bypassing the primary executive summary screen to access archival permissions.
He redirected the trajectory through a legal retention pathway before accessing offshore financial disbursements that were concealed beneath standard tax compliance documentation.
Windows opened and closed in rapid succession as encrypted strings resolved into clear financial statements, routing numbers branching into subsidiary entities that bore sterile, administrative designations.
Callum possessed an extensive understanding of corporate networks and the methods wealthy individuals employed to conceal assets, but he lacked Lawson’s specific capacity to discern structural patterns within random data strings.
Lawson was not executing a standard search; he was operating on direct recognition.
“The location is verified,” Lawson whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he pointed toward a cluster of directories and isolated a secondary folder. “These are the fabricated accounts.”
Callum leaned closer to examine the display, which revealed a sequence of financial transfers involving substantial capital sums executed at regular intervals.
Lawson was designated as the authorizing signatory across a network of Swiss and Caribbean banking channels, each entry authenticated by identity verification files, biometric confirmation logs, and digital signatures routed directly through the estate’s main server.
Lawson issued a sharp laugh that carried no genuine amusement. “Examine the specific timeline.”
Callum reviewed the dates, experiencing an immediate tightening in his abdomen.
The transfers had been executed during a six-week interval during the previous calendar year, a timeline Callum recognized because Andrew’s security personnel had integrated Lawson’s medical confinement into the master household schedule.
The period corresponded to an involuntary clinical observation that the family had designated as emotional instability in public and a domestic inconvenience in private. During the execution of those specific transfers, Lawson had been completely isolated from the estate under medical sedation.
“The entries occurred during my hospitalization,” Lawson stated, his voice rising slightly. “I possessed no knowledge of these accounts, and the staff had confiscated my personal communications devices during that entire week.”
He manipulated the touch panel again to expose the underlying administrative logs.
“My father did not simply invent a narrative to explain an emergency after it occurred,” Lawson noted.
“He constructed an entire digital identity, fabricating a version of my character who signs unauthorized documents and suffers a convenient psychological collapse whenever the corporate structure requires protection.”
Callum analyzed the timestamps, hardware identifiers, and digital authorization tokens. Andrew’s primary office network appeared under a masked routing configuration that required an executive-level clearance to execute.
The evidence was not entirely seamless enough to withstand a specialized federal investigation, but it was thoroughly sufficient to compromise a son who already possessed a public reputation for emotional volatility and erratic behavior.
Substantial corporate funds had moved under Lawson’s identity in structured, bloodless transactions designed to evade regulatory thresholds.
The architecture demonstrated that whoever designed the system understood that the most effective fabrication was one that mirrored the quiet, calculated manipulation common to elite financial networks.
For a brief interval, Callum recalled Andrew sitting on the ninety-second floor of his corporate headquarters, surrounded by reinforced glass and displaying a measured contempt while discussing family legacy and the necessity of stable oversight.
Callum had accepted the assignment under the impression that he was containing a public scandal regarding an unstable heir, recognizing the old man's ruthlessness without understanding the broader design.
Andrew had not retained his services to protect his son. He had hired an operative to secure the parameter while the asset was systematically compromised.
“Initiate the download sequence,” Callum directed.
Lawson remained motionless for a second.
“Extract every component,” Callum repeated. “Secure the metadata, the timestamps, the hardware signatures, and the network routing history. We require definitive proof that these authorizations originated from Andrew’s personal suite or his private servers.”
Lawson inhaled deeply and engaged the extraction path Emilie had integrated into the storage device. The interface displayed a progress indicator as the transfer initiated.
During the subsequent entry, his finger deviated across the sensitive panel, causing the selection prompt to slide laterally and trigger an automated security warning regarding the preservation of encrypted source files.
Lawson muttered an oath, his manual dexterity declining from tremors to a total loss of coordination.
Callum stepped forward, positioning himself immediately behind the younger man.
Lawson rigidified for a fraction of a second before relaxing back against his frame, yielding to a physical necessity that had developed during their shared nights in the upper residential quarters where the boundaries of their professional relationship had collapsed.
“I am supporting your position,” Callum said quietly.
He placed his left hand against Lawson’s hip to stabilize his posture and brought his right hand over Lawson’s fingers on the interface panel. His palm covered the younger man's cold hand, guiding his movements to provide physical stability where Lawson’s motor control had failed.
“The structure is stable,” Callum instructed. “Review the primary prompt.”
Lawson swallowed hard. “Preserve the relational metadata.”
“Execute that selection.”
Callum registered the fine tremor in Lawson’s knuckles alongside the sudden acceleration in his breathing as their torsos aligned. He maintained a deliberate, uniform respiratory pattern, stripping his voice of every quality except direct guidance.
“Advance to the subsequent pane,” he added.
Lawson obeyed the command under the guidance of Callum’s hand, translating each verbal directive into a deliberate physical choice.
The data extraction map expanded to include duplicate archives and a restricted executive file linked to Andrew’s primary credentials, all of which the storage drive absorbed.
“Include that directory,” Callum murmured.
Lawson executed the command.
“And the deleted accounting ledger.”
The interface recorded another entry as the progress indicator advanced through successive percentages, passing ten, twenty-eight, and forty-three percent.
Lawson permitted his head to fall back for a brief moment until his crown touched Callum’s shoulder, a gesture that represented a temporary reliance on the investigator's physical stability rather than actual rest.
Callum maintained his position near Lawson’s ear, monitoring the progress of the file transfer.
“Preserve your awareness,” he said.
“I am attempting to do so.”
“I recognize the effort.”
The indicator reached fifty-nine, seventy-four, and eighty-eight percent. On the display before them, Andrew’s private corporate architecture unraveled file by file, and Callum stood within the narrow glass enclosure, directing Lawson’s hand through the data theft designed to secure his autonomy.
The file transfer concluded with a distinct electronic tone that sounded inappropriately loud within the concrete vault, as if the automated system were celebrating the exploitation of its own network.
For several seconds, neither man altered his position.
The progress indicator displayed a complete extraction, and Emilie’s device verified that the data was secure.
Andrew’s unrecorded ledgers, disguised routing histories, and financial networks were now preserved on a component small enough to be concealed within the lining of Callum’s jacket, existing outside Monroe control for the first time in the family's history.
Lawson exhaled at length, his posture relaxing entirely against Callum’s chest before he corrected his alignment. Even as he adjusted his balance, he did not step away immediately, allowing the side of his head to remain in contact with Callum’s shoulder while he spoke in a strained whisper.
“The data is secure,” he noted.
