Chapter 5 #5

Callum’s jaw tightened. “Provide an escort to his personal quarters,” he directed.

Lawson halted within the door frame at the command, though he refrained from turning to face the room. The pause endured for less than a second, granting Callum a brief, unrealistic hope that Lawson might deliver a statement that was not defined by emotional pain.

Instead, Lawson addressed the empty corridor. “I am capable of traversing the residence without administrative management.”

He resumed his forward progress.

Miles directed a sidelong glance toward Callum, displaying a mixture of amusement and wariness as though elite families and their compromised heirs constituted a theatrical performance he enjoyed monitoring from the wings.

“The determination rests on your authority,” Miles noted.

Callum ignored the implication, crouching to recover his telephone and turning the screen inward before the security supervisor could analyze the file header.

The display had deactivated, presenting a dark surface that reflected his own disciplined features. He secured the device within his pocket with extreme care.

He then disengaged Emilie’s storage drive from the terminal port.

The small component retained a slight warmth against his fingertips for a single beat before he concealed it within the interior seam of his jacket, ensuring Andrew’s unauthorized accounts, automated routes, and forged signatures existed beyond the family's administrative reach.

He had descended to this level to secure definitive evidence, and the objective had been achieved.

The outcome should have resembled a tactical success, but the original commitment papers seemed to generate an intense heat against his chest through the fabric of his pocket, resembling a permanent scar.

He recognized that he should have destroyed the document the moment he verified its contents, having rationalized its preservation by designating the file as essential legal leverage.

He had believed that physical documentation could defeat financial influence if delivered to the correct authority, a calculation that remained objectively true without altering the impact of what Lawson had witnessed.

The younger man had observed Callum carrying the explicit instrument of his institutional confinement close to his body.

Within a different environment, under less invasive illumination and with sufficient duration, Callum might have explained the unsigned authorization block, demonstrating how the document proved criminal intent by charting the connection from Andrew’s office to the Zurich clinic.

He might have acknowledged the more complex reality, which was that he kept the file on his person because the evidence disgusted him and he required the reminder to maintain his awareness of their adversary's ruthlessness.

No logical explanation could survive the initial impact of the visual discovery.

Miles indicated the exit with a movement of his chin. “Advance to the library.”

Callum assumed an upright position and directed a final glance at the terminal screen, noting that the extraction log had cleared completely and Lawson’s access traces had been systematically purged.

The interface had restored its neutral login prompt, remaining blank and deceptive through omission.

He stepped out into the yellow illumination of the corridor.

The transition in light appeared intense after the blue environment of the vault, as the overhead fixtures cast a sallow hue over the personnel. The air within the hallway felt warmer, though it preserved an identical mechanical dryness.

Further down the passage, Lawson maintained a significant lead, moving rapidly without accelerating into a run.

His frame appeared smaller than it had an hour prior, a transformation that resulted from the total collapse of trust between them, which had removed every element of stability from the space.

Callum preserved a uniform pace. He possessed the necessary evidence, the strategic route forward, and the explicit leverage required to dismantle Andrew’s narrative. Despite those assets, he had compromised the single element that validated the entire intervention.

At the terminus of the passage, the reinforced vault door secured itself behind their position with a compressed pneumatic hiss and a heavy mechanical lock, a sound that followed Callum for several steps.

The percussive noise was not dramatic, but it functioned with absolute finality to mark the boundary they had crossed.

The evacuation from the estate would not occur for several hours, and the tasks ahead required precise timing, calculated deceptions, and more risk than he had previously asked Lawson to accept.

As he monitored the younger man's retreating form disappearing toward the structural stairwell, Callum recognized with an intensity that caused a physical ache in his chest that the primary difficulty no longer concerned their physical escape from the property.

The ultimate challenge would center on convincing Lawson that the investigator following him was not another hand securing the leash.
