Chapter 9
Afterclap : the last person who claps after everyone else has stopped.
AUDEN
“ Stay away from my fucking sister,” Scott snarled, getting into my face.
I narrowed my eyes at him and had to resist the urge to push him away from me.
Boss .
He’s your boss , dummy.
I had to keep repeating that to myself over and over again before saying, “ Please step back.”
Scott’s eyes narrowed, and it looked like he was about to push it, but then the door to the training room banged open and the men started filing in.
They all paused at the door, and Scott had no other recourse but to step away and give me the space I so desperately needed. Had he not given me that space, I might’ve reacted before I could get control of myself.
Let’s be honest here, I was one of the most hotheaded of the Carter brothers. I snapped fast and regretted it afterward.
And I would’ve regretted hitting Scott .
As in, I would’ve lost my job, and regretted it later once I’d calmed down enough to see that a brother being upset that his sister was dating a cop he didn’t like was probably a normal thing.
Everyone filed in, and I crossed my arms over my chest to keep from clenching my hands and letting Scott know just how much he’d gotten to me.
The asshole.
“ What’s on the agenda today?” a fellow SWAT team member by the name of Boscoe asked. “ Because last I heard, we already finished this month’s training.”
Boscoe was always saying what we felt. Whereas Atlas and I would’ve gotten in trouble if we’d said that, Boscoe didn’t.
It helped to be the grandson of a board member…
“ We did, but we can never have too much,” Sheldon said, acting for all he was worth like he didn’t kiss Scott’s ass every chance he got.
Fuckin ’ loser.
“ Ass kisser,” someone coughed.
Sheldon’s eyes narrowed on the crowd at my back.
Since I was in the front, it was more than obvious it hadn’t come from me.
That didn’t stop Scott’s eyes from becoming calculating as he said, “ We’re working on team building and trust.”
Someone snorted behind me.
Likely my brother.
“ I’m not sure why you’re laughing,” Scott said as he moved his gaze from person to person. “ We’re trying to make this team more cohesive. That starts by exercises just like this.”
“ Some of us are just coming off shift,” Boscoe pointed out. “ Others are about to go on shift. And then there are a few of us who have been up for a solid thirty-six hours thanks to that SWAT call two nights ago. As much as I’d love to do some team bonding,” Boscoe lied, “ I really don’t have it in me today.”
A -fucking-men.
Scott frowned. “ You’re saying you can’t handle the demands of the job?”
“ I’m saying I’m not going to handle your demands for our job,” Boscoe snapped, again voicing all of our opinions. “ The monthly hours are finished. I’m only required to be here for those on my off days. Now that they’re done, I have an entire half a month off to spend on my own.”
Agreed .
“ Well , we’re here today because we need to catch up on a few things.” Scott tried to defend his actions, but it just looked to me like he was trying to save face.
“ Well ,” another voice came from the back, “that’s all well and good, but how about we go over those things at our next SWAT meeting? I agree with Boscoe . We all just came off shifts or are about to come onto a shift. And just sayin’, but SWAT is my secondary position. And my boss doesn’t like it when I’m late.”
Quaid was his boss.
The man speaking was Ambrose Dunn , who’d just recently joined the SWAT team.
“ Dunny ,” Scott started.
“ Don’t call me that. You know I don’t like it,” Ambrose snapped. “ But I really gotta go. It’s been real.”
Ambrose and Boscoe left without another word.
Scott narrowed his eyes at them.
“ Actually ,” I heard an unwelcome voice say from the back of the room, “that sounds like a solid plan. You’re dismissed, gentlemen.”
“ And ladies,” the newest member of the SWAT team called out.
The room started to empty, and by the time I saw Chief Austin glaring at the newest member, Jacqueline , it was almost completely empty but for me, Jackie , Scott , and Chief Austin .
“ Out ,” Chief Austin ordered her.
Jackie left without another word, and just as I started to as well, he held up his hand. “ What’s this I hear about you dating my daughter?”
I nearly groaned.
Talking to the chief about dating his daughter was not on the list of things I wanted to do with zero sleep, yet there we were.
“ It’s new,” I said carefully, not wanting to go into more detail than that without talking to Maven first.
Plus , I was more than aware that Maven and the chief had a bad relationship. I did not want to turn this into a really bad thing before I’d even gotten out of the gates.
I needed Chief Austin to like me because I wanted to keep my job, as well as for it to remain a hostility-free environment. Yet , I also wanted to talk to Maven to see what she thought we should share.
Yet , the way Chief Austin was currently glaring at me, I knew this wasn’t going to turn out the way I wanted it.
“ It doesn’t matter if it’s new or old. Stop .” Scott came forward, once again getting into my space.
My brows raised. “ I’m sorry, but what? You’re not her keeper, Scott . She’s free to date anyone that she wants to. I’m not using her.”
Chief Austin didn’t seem moved by my assurances, though.
“ I do tend to agree with my son,” Chief Austin said, not beating around the bush. “ I don’t want you anywhere near my daughter. Make sure you heed this warning.”
Make sure you heed this warning.
Goddamn , but he was such an asshole.
I stiffened my spine. “ I’m sorry, but we’re both adults. She’s into me, and I’m into her. I’m not going to back off.”
Chief Austin’s eyes narrowed as he slowly took a step toward me, “ How bad do you want to keep your career?”
He was seriously going to take this route?
I snorted. “ I can go anywhere to work, Chief Austin . Threats won’t work here.”
He tilted his head, studying me.
I could see the wheels turning, as if he was just trying to find an angle that would work to get me to back off.
“ I don’t have to force you to comply. I can do the same thing to her that I’ll do to you.” He paused. “ How badly do you care about her and her business?”
I clenched my teeth. “ What are you trying to say here?”
He needed to spell it out at this point, because there was no way I was going to stop unless he gave me everything.
The chief leaned back, resting his shoulders on the pillar in the middle of the room, his eyes on me, as he said, “ You leave her the hell alone, and I’ll stop trying to take her business down.”
I clenched my jaw hard before saying, “ And if I don’t?”
“ I’ll ramp it up.” He went on, “ I can do a lot to her. I can make her life a living hell.”
I didn’t doubt that he could.
“ You’d do that to your own daughter?” I asked incredulously.
“ I’ve been doing it to my own daughter,” he countered.
I shifted on my feet, suddenly furious. “ Why ?”
He shrugged. “ Because I can, Carter . Because I fucking can.”
Then he left, and Scott went with him, leaving me in the middle of the SWAT training room with an ever-growing lump of uncertainty growing in my chest.
Noise from the other room had me moving before I was ready.
With my head down and my eyes downcast, I wound my way through the maze of hallways in the inner police department.
It was only when I’d made it back outside to my truck, with the doors closed and the truck running, that I let out a string of curses.
After I’d calmed down enough to speak without yelling, I reached for my phone and canceled the date I’d made with Maven only hours ago and hoped that she wouldn’t hate me forever.
What I didn’t do was give up.
This wasn’t the end. Only the beginning.
