~ Chapter Five ~

“Everything okay?” I asked, taking the phone she just handed me and sticking it back in my pocket. She was smirking all over again so I could only assume everything was okay. I didn’t want to go back to that place and try to find the man, but if he demanded it, I would. Or I would even take Lucia back to his house.

“Sure. Want the icing on the cake for tonight?”

“Your dad knows who’s behind all this crap?”

“No, however, I have my thoughts. My dad said I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, but you’re the only one he trusts at this moment to keep me safe.”

I couldn’t help but let out a big laugh at that. The man who was basically a sworn enemy, a man I had to steer clear of and only play nice at certain times just told his daughter he trusted me? What the hell was this world coming to?

“That’s rich, Siren, very rich. I’m not sure why your dad does, but I do promise to protect you. And keep you safe. Regardless of your brave words just moments ago, I do think your dad would kill me if anything happened to you.”

“Can’t blame a girl for trying to get what she wanted, you know.”

“Hell, you are a siren. Now, turn slightly so I can see your back. Does it hurt a lot?”

“Not a lot. But I can feel the pieces. It’s those annoying type splinters. Which would make sense given how I was standing.”

“Like you can feel, but can’t see?” I glanced over her back, almost wincing at the sight.

Don’t get me wrong, in my line of work, I often saw my fair share of blood. But there was something about a woman bleeding that just made me feel sick to my stomach. They were soft creatures, they shouldn’t bleed, shouldn’t get hurt. A sad fantasy world I had for them, because in real life, they often bleed just as much as men.

“Is it bad?”

“No. There is a section in the upper back that I want my doctor to look at. He should have been called.”

I glanced up, seeing his car as we pulled into the driveway and then quickly lifted her and took her upstairs, choosing to ignore the looks being tossed my way. They can question all they want, I didn’t care.

“I can walk.”

I glanced down at her and smirked. “I figured. But I do like having you in my arms.”

Her smile and the tinge on her cheeks were all the rewards I needed.

“Trevor, you’re a flirt.”

I entered my room, kicking the door closed behind me and sat her on my bed.

“Sure am. But look at where you are. You’re still in my room. You’re in my bed.” I rummaged around my closest for a moment then handed her some shorts and a tee shirt. “And you’ll be out of that dress and into my clothes. I’d say the flirting got me somewhere.”

Lucia

“I take that back, you’re not just a flirt, you’re dangerous.” I took the clothes he handed me and lifted a brow at him. We both know he couldn’t deny it, but it would be fun to see him try.

“Now, Siren,” he started, pressing his hands on either side of my hips on the bed and leaned in, “we both know that the danger side attracts you more than you’d like to admit.”

A knock at the door had him pulling back and had me taking a deep breath.

Damn that man and his insight. He saw right through my bravado back at the mayor’s house, and he was seeing straight into my soul right now. Not a good thing at all.

“Ah, Justin, come in. Lucia, this is Justin, my most trusted doctor on staff.”

I turned and offered the aging gentleman a soft smile.

“This was not what I was expecting when they called and said you needed help. I figured, after hearing about the explosion, I’d be fixing you up. Not this beauty. Hello, Lucia.”

“Hello, pleasure to meet you.”

“Justin, I’m stepping out of the room so you can check her out. I’m trusting you to be on your best behavior.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle as Justin just rolled his eyes before helping me stand to remove the dress.

Thirty-five minutes later, Justin tended the last of the wounds and left me to change. I looked at the bandage on my back and shook my head, slipping on Trevor’s shirt. I bit my lip as I held the collar up to my nose and inhaled. His scent screamed him. A mix of dark and yet light. Strong and yet soft.

It was him in a bottle.

“Lucia.” I turned as the door opened and Trevor walked in, closing it again. “All good?”

His eyes raked over me and even from the distance, I could see the flare of heat in his eyes. Holy shit, that had the inferno inside of me raging once more.

“All fixed. He pulled them out, cleaned up the wounds, and left a massive cover on it.”

“Good.” Trevor sat on the bed and patted the spot next to him. “I upped the security around the house, and I have plenty of guest bedrooms for you to sleep in, if you’re uncomfortable. But I did tell your father I’d protect you, and I’d rather you be in my room than anywhere else. I can sleep on the floor, if you’d like.”

“You’re joking, right?” I looked over my shoulder at the big bed and then back at him. “There’s plenty of room for the both of us. Besides, we’re adults.”

“We are. I also know you were propositioning me earlier.”

“Says the man whose dick was pressing against my stomach.”

“Hey, kissing a beautiful woman, Lucia, does that to a man.”

“Ah, so when I want to feel that again, I’ll just kiss you?”

I grinned as he shook his head at me. “Damn siren.”

“Best believe it. And though I wouldn’t mind that, honestly, I’d just like to be held. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?”

I knew it would be, on many levels, but I was not going to walk out of this room and away from him. There was something driving me to him and I’ll be damned if I was going to let it fall away now.
