Epilogue - Jacob Robertson

The Colorado Wolves have placed defenseman Karl Bell on unconditional waivers today for the purpose of terminating his contract.

I read the head line again because it causes me an immense amount of personal satisfaction to see it in black and white. Knowing my father would be rolling over in his grave at the current state of his hockey team thrills me in a way nothing else can.

I knew about the hazing. My father showed me a few of his "recordings" when I first began working for him.

"This is how you keep these guys in line, Jacob.

" I went to the bathroom and threw up after watching just a few.

Liam Ferguson's was one of them. My father thought I was a pansy.

Telling me I needed to toughen up if something like this upsets me enough to puke.

I wanted to tell him I'd be more worried if it didn't upset me.

I didn't. He wouldn't have cared about my opinion anyway.

By this point I already knew he was a monster.

The hazing just added one more item to his list of transgressions.

I started keeping track long ago, slowly working my way through the list.

I've been watching out for Liam since his rookie year. I was never able to do much until recently, but I did what I could. He was one of the few decent human beings on our team for many years.

Eddie hasn't seen the videos. He's been a great help to me so many times over the years when I've needed someone to help fix all the things that Tad Robertson has broken, but I just couldn't bear to share them with anyone else, including Eddie.

It felt like such a violation of privacy just for me to watch them.

Thank goodness he was willing to help me without video evidence.

Typical Eddie. Heart of gold. It was easy to talk him into helping out with Liam's happy ending.

He knew more about Liam's life than I did.

Turns out he's been friendly with Liam's parents for years.

I never would have known about his crush on Madison or his desire to play with his best friend Walker again.

A couple of suggestions to Damon and it all settled into place. I guess I'm getting pretty good at this matchmaking business. On to the next one…
