Chapter 17

COLT

I knocked on Molly’s apartment door. The building was two stories, four units in total. It was newer, brick and the entrances to each apartment were on the outside. I knew someone in the department who used to live here before he got married. Decent place.

She’d be asleep after her night shift, but I needed answers and I wasn’t waiting until she woke up this later afternoon for them.

Cam was beside me. Between the two of us, we made a wall, so she wasn’t going to run off past us.

Not that I expected her to run. Hell, what did I even know of her?

Maybe she was sneaking out a window right now. He looked to me and I knocked again.

The door to the other second floor apartment opened. We turned.

“Hey, Colt. Cam.” It was Andy who ran the Feed and Seed.

Our family had been doing business with the place for as long as I could remember.

Andy had only been there a few years, but knew all of us because he’d been in Hayes’s class at school.

Decent guy. We’d both been part of a group that went on a river float trip last summer.

We met by the exterior stairwell and shook hands. He was dressed casually in jeans and a gray canvas jacket.

“You here for Molly?” he asked.

“Got some questions for her,” I said, not offering up much.

“I was surprised she told me you broke up,” he said.

My brows shot up but I remained silent. Only years of training kept me from wanting to ask him all sorts of questions. It was better to stay quiet and let a suspect fill in the quiet. Even though Andy wasn’t a suspect, the concept worked.

“Heard around town you two were pretty serious, but she told me it wasn’t like that. That you were a fling.”

My jaw was clenched so tight, I was sure Cam heard my molars crack.

“Oh yeah, why’s that?” Cam asked for me.

Andy glanced away, flushed. I couldn’t miss the sly smile on his face. “‘Cause she came onto me yesterday.”

What the actual fuck?

“Knocked on my door and asked for sugar,” he explained. “I know little old ladies do that, but she wasn’t looking for sugar. She was looking for something else.”

He winked.

Winked!

I wanted to punch his face in. Beat him to a pulp. Cam set his hand on my shoulder and it was the steadying gesture I needed.

“Nothing like a smokin’ hot one night stand to clean out the pipes,” Cam said, sounding like we were in a guys’ locker room. The last thing I wanted to chat about was how Molly’d cleaned out Andy’s fucking pipes.

That eased the tension in Andy’s shoulders, as if he were afraid he’d made a mistake by fucking my girl. But he’d been told we broke up, so she’d been fair game. “Yeah, shit.” He ran a hand through his short hair. “She can suck dick like a Hoover vacuum, right, Colt?”

Cam’s grip tightened.

“I admit, I’ve never seen a heart shaped pussy patch before.”

“What the fuck is that?” Cam asked.

Andy pointed to the front of his jeans and circled his finger. “Her hair on her pussy was shaved into a heart. Never seen anything like it.”

By the look on his face, he wanted to see it again, and maybe up close.

“Don’t you gotta be somewhere?” Cam asked, probably sensing that I was close to my limit.

Andy blinked, clearly unaware that he was really close to dying.

He gave a stupid salute, then went down the steps in the casual, relaxed way of a guy who’d had his balls emptied.

Cam and I stood on the landing and watched Andy pull out of the small lot in his older model pickup. Then Cam stepped in front of me, made me look him in the eyes.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d find another woman like Lexi, but shit.”

He felt sorry for me. He knew what happened with Lexi, how she’d cheated on me and strung me along when all she had to do was cut things off.

At the time, I’d thought I wanted everything with her.

Then I met Molly and realized what Lexi and I shared had been superficial.

I hadn’t been in love with her. I thought I had been, but when I really fell for Molly, I finally knew what love really felt like.

“It’s not her,” I told him.

His eyes widened. “In the video? Sure as hell was. You saw it, too. I had breakfast with her, sat right beside her. Remember?”

I shook my head. “Not her.”

He set his hands on his hips, completely unconvinced. “Okay, Mr. Sheriff. What clue am I missing?”

“The fact that Molly, my Molly, has a waxed pussy. Not a chance in hell can pussy hair grow back and shaved into a heart shape in three days.” Three days was the last time I saw, touched, licked, and fucked that smooth, bare pussy.

His eyes widened as he caught on. “Doubt that’d be admissible in court,” he said.

I pointed in his face. “You say one word about my girl’s pussy and I’ll kill you myself.”

He held up his hands in front of him. “If Molly didn’t break into my clinic and didn’t fuck Andy, then who the hell did?”

My cell rang. I pulled it from my pocket. It was Marge, the sheriff office administrator. She’d worked that position through four sheriffs and was good friends with our Ma. Besides Mabel, she knew everything that was going on in town.

“Marge,” I said.

“Molly Simon’s here to see you.”

I glanced at Cam.

“Be there in five.”

I ended the call and took the steps to the ground level two at a time. My dick was hard just from Marge saying my girl’s name.

“Time to get the answers.”
