Chapter 6

CHAPTER SIX

Genevieve

One week later

“Ha! And you didn’t think it would happen to you. Well, lookie, lookie.” Marlowe said as she spun a cake around, perfecting her crumb coating before the final icing.

I rolled my eyes. “Nothing happened to me. I met a nice man, we get along great, so why not hang out with him?

“I’m pretty sure you’re doing a lot more than just hanging out.” Marlowe wiggled her eyebrows, and I wanted to throw a cupcake at her head.

“Mmhmm. I haven’t confirmed or denied anything.”

“Oh, okay, so you mean to tell me you haven’t spent hours every night this past week fucking?”

“No.” I retorted. But it wasn’t long before a laugh erupted from my throat and my cheeks flushed hot.

“Yeah, exactly.” Marlowe laughed. “These mountain men are irresistible. It’s like they put a spell on you or something.”

I rolled my eyes. “It’s hormones. Nature’s way of getting us to reproduce. That’s why we fall in love.”

Marlowe groaned. “Not this shit again. I was hoping after a mountain man swept you off your feet, you’d stop with this shit. Love is real. Look at you.”

“Of course it’s real. So is lust. So that we reproduce.”

“Give me one of those cupcakes so I can throw it at your head.” Marlowe said and I burst into laughter.

“I was totally thinking about throwing one at your head.”

Marlowe narrowed her eyes at me. “Don’t you dare. I just got this crumb coat perfect. One little fuck up and I’m screwed.”

I put my hands up in surrender. “Okay, got it. I have orders to fill anyways. My red velvet swirls are flying off the shelves.”

“That’s because they’re to die for. Do you mind opening the cooler for me?” Marlowe nodded towards it before picking up her cake. I opened the cooler door, and she went in with the cake, setting it on one of many cake shelves. “There.”

“Yoo hoo. We heard some pretty ladies work here.” Maverick’s voice floated into the kitchen and butterflies swarmed in my stomach.

“Stunning ladies, to be exact.” Steeler’s voice came next, and we both scrambled out of the cooler like little schoolgirls.

I elbowed her in the side, and she flicked my shoulder before we both dissolved into a fit of giggles, our men finding us barely standing up as we laughed our asses off against the work table.

“Uh, what did we miss?” Maverick grinned and I could tell by the way he looked at me, he was undressing me with his eyes. My body temperature spiked several degrees as my panties flooded with heat.

“Nothing, Mar is just being stupid.” I shot her a glare, then turned back to Maverick. “What are you two fools up to?”

“On lunch break, and we missed our girls.” Maverick took me by the waist and pulled me tight against him. He kissed me softly, a little nibble at the end to remind me more was to come later. When we were alone.

I’d spent several nights at his place since our first night together, and while it was amazing and full of mind-blowing sex, not much sleep happened. And that was starting to catch up to me.

Steeler and Marlowe walked towards the front of the bakery, lost in their own conversation. Now that it was only the two of us, I hugged him tight and whispered in his ear, “One day I want you to fuck me in the walk-in cooler.”

Maverick’s whole body shook with laughter. “Of all places? Damn, my girl’s a freak.”

“You love it.” I leaned back and looked up into his stunning eyes, ones I get lost in all the time.

“I’d imagine it’d be a little cold. Which isn’t so good for hard dicks.”

I snorted. “Aw, a little shrinkage action, you mean?”

Maverick laughed. “Something like that. How about we start with the table?”

I made a face. “First, it’s complete unsanitary considering we bake food and sell it. And second, I’d never be able to look at this table the same way again. How would I work? All I’d see was us fucking on that table.”

Maverick lifted me into his arms and spun me around as we laughed. “You make me so happy, baby. I planned a special dinner tonight. So don’t stay at work too late, okay?”

“You better let me get back to work, then.” I kissed his mouth gently, and he turned into a fiery storm of passion, the kiss hot and sexy and oh so good.

“Um, excuse me, this is a place of business.” Marlowe’s pretend stern voice broke through our little bubble, the one where nothing around us mattered. My most favorite place to be.

“Is it? I would’ve never known.” I teased. Next thing I knew, a cupcake really was flying at my head. I caught it in my hand and tossed it her way.

“Now ladies, let’s behave ourselves. No throwing food.” Steeler said before kissing Mar on the lips. “See you later, love.”

I hugged Maverick one last time. “See you tonight.”

“Oh, you sure will be seeing me tonight baby. Just you wait.” Maverick winked, and I shook my head with laughter at his silly antics. He was always ready for a good time and that is one thing I loved most about him.

Later that night, over a candlelit dinner, Maverick confessed his love to me and in return, I told him I loved him, too.

It was true. I could fight it, deny it, whatever I wanted. But it didn’t change the fact that that man was walking around with my heart in his capable hands. And I very much had his.

A month later, I moved into his cabin with him. Marlowe and I rented out our place to another couple in town. She had moved in with Steeler a few months back and often, our apartment sat empty. It was a waste of money and other people in town needed places to stay.

Sure, it was fast, but so was our entire love story.

And maybe, happily ever afters still weren’t a thing, but somehow, I landed mine, and that was the only thing I cared about.
