Chapter Ten #2
I felt Kaelen’s power flare as he scanned the area. “There are twenty-two heavily armed soldiers approaching the base from the southwest.”
“Did you copy that, Uncle Ben?”
“That’s an affirmative. Booby-traps engaged.”
“Oh boy, this is gonna be fun.”
Uncle Saul sighed in my head. “Lose the gleeful smile, Lexi or you’ll frighten off the major general. He’s watching you with his night-vision binoculars.”
“Yes, sir.” I went into my clueless female act. “Are his men wearing night goggles?”
“They are,” Uncle Ben answered.
A giggle escaped me. “The minute they hit the first tripwire it’s gonna be like shooting fish in a barrel.”
“Why would you shoot fish in a barrel?” A confused Xyler asked.
I smothered a laugh. “You’ll see.”
An ear-shattering blast of an airhorn was followed quickly by an array of 500-watt flood lights, blinding any soldier wearing night-vison goggles.
The disoriented soldiers stumbled into another tripwire and were immediately sprayed with sticky goop that quickly hardened and made moving difficult.
“Drop your weapons now,” Uncle Saul bellowed.
The idiots opened fire.
Bullets pinging off their armor, Xyler, Dad and Kaelen quickly disarmed the disoriented Oath Defenders.
Xyler’s horned helmet and glowing yellow eyes sent some freaked-out soldiers running for their lives. Splat! Right into an open pit filled with runoff from the septic tank. Another problem Uncle Ben had failed to fix.
Major General Timmy Showalter, a pipsqueak in camouflage who thought he was Napolean Bonaparte, stomped through the stalks of corn. “Get your hands up, bitch!”
“Now is that nice?” I triggered my body arms to cover everything except my face and head.
“Surrender or die!”
I rolled my eyes. “If you haven’t noticed, you’re kinda surrounded and your men have been disarmed.”
“Get your hands up or I’ll kill you!”
“Keep him talking, Lexi,” Dad ordered.
I raised the basket full of veggies over my head. “What do you want, Timmy?”
His mouth drew back in a feral snarl. “That’s Major General Showalter. You will show me the proper respect.”
“When did you get promoted?” Call me curious.
“After we defeated your fake aliens in Nogales,” Timmy gloated.
“The Tai-Kok have never been in Nogales. You blew up Pedro Guzman’s compound. Whoopsie.”
Timmy’s grip tightened on his gun. “We are here to take possession of the portal. It belongs to the people of the United States, not the traitors at Central Command.”
“Traitors? General Jones’s masterful strategy is the only reason you’re still breathing, and Earth isn’t an empty graveyard.”
“Lies. All lies. Nothing but Hollywood hocus-pocus. Central Command killed all those people, not aliens. In the last election, we won by a landslide.”
“The election you held was in your compound only and doesn’t count. You do not represent the American people. You’re a bunch of wannabe soldiers who can’t fight their way out of a paper bag,” I snapped in disgust.
Practically foaming at the mouth, Timothy screamed, “Using the portal we’ll send our best soldiers into Central Command and annihilate all the traitors. When we’re done, we will rule Earth and whores like you will spread your legs for us.”
I literally saw red and hit him with my mental right hook.
Timmy’s head snapped back and he landed with a splash in the mud.
“What the fuck did you do, bitch?” Harold, Timmy’s ninety-year-old grandfather and second-in-command, yelled.
I punched him too.
He fell backward into the mud.
A bullet whizzed by my ear.
Xyler zoomed by me and a man screamed, “What are you? What are you?”
The father of my child hurled him into the pit. “Death.”
“Thanks, Xyler.”
He bowed slightly. “My pleasure.”
Sitting my basket of veggies on the table, I quickly checked on Jaxor. Huh? He had slept through the whole thing.
Kaelen appeared next to me. “I read Timmy’s mind before you hit him, and they are planning on setting off a nuclear bomb at Central Command in two days.”
“Trying to take a nuclear bomb through the portal would create a cataclysm that would have obliterate most of southern Nevada along with the portal,” Uncle Ben growled.
My right eye twitched. “Where in the hell did they get a nuke?”
“From General “The Beast” Hudson. He claims the Tai-Kok invasion is an elaborate hoax designed to take over the government,” Uncle Saul replied.
I stared at him in disbelief. “And the spaceships?”
“Clever holographs and he also believes the Earth is flat.”
My left eye started twitching. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he spend a month on the space station back in 2012?”
“He did,” Uncle Saul replied .
I threw my hands up in disgust. “And he still believes the Earth is flat?”
“He says he was given hallucinogenic drugs the entire time. He also claims NASA doesn’t exist and there is no space program.”
“Oh, my, God.”
Dad added, “Hudson believes in showing no mercy to his enemies. His own men call him The Beast because of all the civilian casualties he causes.”
“Does Timmy know where the nuke is?” Please say yes. Please. Too many had died already.
Kaelen wrapped his arms around me and kissed me gently. “He does.”
I sagged in relief. “Thank God.” My stomach rumbled hungrily. “Do we have time to eat before we save the world again?”
The men laughed.
“After we secure our prisoners, we can eat,” Dad said.
My stomach growled loudly. “I’ll unlock the storage shed.”
“It’s full of spiders,” Uncle Ben advised.
I shrugged. “We simply tell them they’re fake Hollywood spiders.”
