Chapter 9 Cornelius #2

“Actually, probably not. He eats meat, but I haven’t seen him eat a whole lot of it. Could that be a problem?” Matthew loved fruit. And salads. I’d need to introduce him to Cobb salads. They were packed with protein, and since they were salads, I hoped he’d enjoy them.

“Do you like your new suite?”

“It’s…different. There are three bedrooms, and I guess I understand why, but it’s a bit overwhelming since I’ve been in a one-bedroom place for so long. Although, Balthazar and I were in a nice pack house out in Timber Valley. It had five bedrooms.”

“Well, I’ve heard wolves tend to have larger families. We’re much more…reserved when it comes to that.”

I chuckled at that. “True. Matthew is in the bedroom. And you’ll have to excuse the barrenness of the place. We’ve not even—”

“No excuses needed. We all understand. You two will make it your own. I realize you’re probably worried, so lead me to the master bedroom and we’ll see what’s going on.”

It was a relief because I was worried. Three weeks ago my entire life changed when I sensed Matthew.

He was my world, and I was worried. I walked through the suite and into the master bedroom, heading directly toward the bed.

I carefully sat on the edge and once again ran my fingers through Matthew’s curls. I loved them.

“He’s young. How old is he exactly?” Constantine whispered.

“Twenty-four. He said fae tend to look younger anyway, but yeah, he looks very young. He was worried I would have a problem with the difference.”

“Fate works in mysterious ways. Do you mind?” Constantine asked, pointing toward Matthew while holding out his stethoscope.

“Not at all.” I gently shook Matthew’s shoulder. “Sweetheart, time to wake up. I have the doctor here to look at you,” I said through our bond, hoping it would get through to him better. When his blue eyes opened, Matthew blinked a few times before offering a smile.

“I dozed off. Sorry.”

“Don’t be. You need rest. Matthew, I’m Dr. Middleton. But you may either call me Constantine or Dr. C. How are you feeling?”

Matthew looked to Constantine and wrinkled his nose. “Like the world is spinning. It gets better on and off, but the dizziness keeps coming back.”

“Any other symptoms? Shortness of breath? Severe cramps?”

Matthew shook his head.

“And does your stomach feel queasy all the time? Or only when you’re dizzy?”

“Only when dizzy. And not every time. I only throw up when I try to get up. Usually when I’m in a hurry.”

Constantine seemed to think about that and gave a gentle nod before he held up his stethoscope and a small pen light. “Can I get you a quick exam? I just want to listen to your heart and lungs, as well as shine this crazy bright light in your eyes.”

“Sure.” Matthew tried to sit up, but a gentle hand on his shoulder had him staying put.

“No need to get up. If you could, just stare up at the ceiling for me.”

I watched as Constantine gave Matthew a quick exam. He seemed serious when listening to Matthew’s chest and then again his stomach. When he was finished, he placed everything in his bag and took a step back.

“Well, I’d say you’re certainly pregnant. We can do a scan in the office to be sure. I have an ultrasound machine that hasn’t gotten a whole lot of use lately.”

“Yeah? That would be neat. I read about those while in Timber Valley,” Matthew said. I began to wonder just how much reading he’d done.

Constantine nodded. “Yes. Also, without doing bloodwork, I’d say you’re probably a bit anemic.

You look pale, and even I can tell it’s not your natural coloring.

I recommend eating a bit more protein, and we’ll get you on a multivitamin.

Come to the office for bloodwork.” Constantine smiled at both of us before his gaze settled on Matthew.

“You’re also probably a bit dehydrated. That can also cause dizziness.

Drink plenty of water, and limit tea to the one I give you.

It will help calm your stomach. Although, it smells terrible, and the flavor is just as bad.

I believe Ellie might have something to help it be a bit more palatable. I can ask.”

“Thank you. We both would appreciate that,” I said.

“No problem at all. If you have any questions, ask. You know how to reach me, Cornelius. I’ll let you two be.

The vitamins and tea will be in the kitchen area.

For now, rest, water, tea, and just relax for a few days and see how you’re feeling.

You’re making a baby, and that takes a lot out of anyone. ”

“Thank you, Dr. C. I appreciate it. I’m just tired.”

“It’s understandable,” Constantine said before turning toward me. “I can see myself out. Congratulations again. And to you as well, Matthew. And welcome to the coven.”

“Thank you,” Matthew said in the middle of a yawn.

Constantine was instantly gone, and I was left with my One. I had tea made for him and helped him sit up enough to drink it. He cringed at the scent and turned his head away at the flavor.

“Eww, no. We have a tea that tastes so much better. I wonder if I can get to the fae realm and get some.”

“That, my love, I’ll look into. I don’t blame you. The smell alone is enough to be a deterrent. How about I lie down and rest with you? It’s been a busy few weeks.”

Matthew sighed and nodded. He was already dozing off by the time I crawled under his blanket with him and pulled him into my arms. I did the same thing as my One. I sighed and quickly drifted off to sleep.
