“I’ll be that any day over being a bitch nigga.

My people been here before Texas was even a gotdamn state in the union.

You think I give a fuck about what some back east muthafucka thinks about me?

Somebody who failed at basketball and thought that being a cowboy was a smart backup plan?

You’d have more wins if you focused on winning instead of being wined and dined like a bitch pretending to live a life you haven’t earned yet.

But I guess that goes back to the difference in wishing and working. ”

“You’ve lost before. I was in that arena when I watched you have to eat dirt and humble pie.”

“I did, didn’t I? Funny thing about that injury I had.

Hurt like a bitch and took damn near forever to get over.

I’m still in physical therapy damn near weekly to make sure everything is staying aligned.

When we checked out my equipment the damn rope was frayed.

All too cleanly to be anything other than with a knife.

You wouldn’t know nothing bout that would you? ”

This is why my brother had been speaking to me about being a grownup. I’d been sitting on this information for a year. I hadn’t fallen off that bull, I’d been sabotaged. That rope had snapped and I had been set up to fall.

“I have no idea what you talking about.” When he stepped back almost as though to distance himself from the denial I knew he had something to do with that shit. But I had too much going on to handle him right now.

“I hope to God you do. I been waiting for another reason to beatcho’ ass and if I find out you had something to with it, whoo, have mercy on your soul.

Cause playing with my life by fucking with my equipment is a death wish.

Just like messing with my woman, my family or my money.

It’s the quickest way to end up with a bullet in your head, boy. ”

“You threatening me again?” He looked around trying to laugh it off. As though I’d be stupid enough to threaten him with anyone around who would give a fuck.

I whistled and shoved my hands in my pockets so that I didn’t choke this nigga out. “Oooooh, that’s a promise. I’ll just have to buy my future brother-in-law a big ass wedding present as an apology for stepping on his toes when it comes to you.”

“I could have her back right now.”

“My sister wouldn’t look at you to piss at you if you were on fire. Wouldn’t waste her breath laughing at the degenerate you turned out to be. I know she says many hallelujahs that she didn’t end up with yo ass draggin’ her down.”

Reece’s ex crossed his arms like a kid who was ready to take his ball and go home. “Y’all think y’all are the greatest thing smoking around here. But you forget that every man ain’t gone put up with her ways. Y’all are never gone find a man to put up with how she is.”

“What you mean how she is? An heiress? Beautiful as hell? Well connected? See your problem was that you needed my sister. You needed her. And you hated that fact. But the man she has now? He don’t need her, he wants her.

Not the Chisholm-Love name to make himself feel important.

He just wants Reece. Rafael is more than enough of a name without her.

That shit with you has her putting him through his paces and as her brother I’m glad for it.

No matter how good he seems she gone keep that nigga on his toes. ”

This muthafucka laughed arrogantly like what I said proved some belief he’d held onto to keep himself sane. “And you say she don’t want me back.”

I huffed at how delusional he really was.

“She don’t. Damn, nigga, keep up. Do I need a whiteboard to summarize this shit for you so you can refer back to your notes and shit?

You might have made her cautious of running into another fuck nigga but that’s how she’s supposed to move.

And you know the biggest difference between you and him besides him being a trill ass man? ”

“What’s that?”

“He’s rich, famous as fuck and is the best there is at his position.

He’s the best offensive lineman in the league and he’s getting the type of accolades that you wish you could earn in your field.

Of course I’m constantly in your way with that ain’t it?

” I was grinning again knowing I was in this nigga’s head something serious.

“He won’t stick around.” He was trying to psyche himself up but it wasn’t going to work.

“It’s been years. Something tells me you’re real wrong with that assumption.” Runt’s ass had already told us he wanted to marry our sister. I wouldn’t be shocked if he already had a ring ready to go.

“If you say so. I don’t give a fuck about somebody who don’t mean shit to me. She can do whatever she wants; it don’t matter at all.”

“If that’s how you keep yourself warm at night.

You’re a user and you’re damn lucky that you didn’t get the full brunt of our wrath but something tells me it’s coming real soon.

You ain’t the type to learn from your mistakes.

Now, you continue to wish and wait and I’ll continue to work and win.

And things can go back to how they always been this season. Ain’t that right, my boy?”

“I ain’t your boy.”

I snapped my fingers and pointed at him nodding in agreement. “You fucking right about that shit. I don’t hang around lames. So get the fuck out my face, bitch ass nigga.”
