CRIMSON DEBTS Chapter 35

Chapter 35: The Soil of the South

The apartment was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a few stray candles. The chaos of the Thorne Syndicate felt worlds away, yet the air between Kaelen and Julian was thick with the weight of the future.

A Vow in the Dark

After the wounds were dressed, Kaelen didn't let Julian go. He carried him to the bed, laying him down with a reverence that felt almost like a prayer. There was no "Enforcer" left in the room-only a man who had seen the bottom of his own soul and found it wanting.

Kaelen hovered over Julian, his fingers tracing the line of Julian's jaw.

"I'm done, Julian," he whispered, his voice steady for the first time that night.

"I'm not leading the Thorne Syndicate. I'm not waiting for Silas to find another way to break us.

My mother had a small estate... a cottage in her hometown. It's quiet. I want to take you there."

Julian looked up at him, his heart racing. "And my father? He comes with us, right? We can finally be a family away from all of this."

The House of Living Memories

The next morning, the reality of the move set in.

Suitcases stood half-packed in the living room.

Mr. Vane sat by the window, holding a small, faded photograph of Julian's mother.

When Julian approached him about the move, the older man offered a sad, gentle smile and shook his head.

"No, Julian," Mr. Vane said softly. "I can't go to the countryside with you."

"Dad, why?" Julian's voice rose in panic. "You aren't safe here! Silas is still out there, and Kaelen is leaving the business. You have to come with us!"

Mr. Vane took Julian's hand, his eyes glistening.

"Julian, look around this apartment. Every crack in the wall, every scent in the kitchen.

.. your mother is here. I've spent my life making mistakes, but the one thing I did right was loving her in this home.

If I leave this place, I leave the last piece of her I have left.

I'm not staying for the city, son. I'm staying for her. "

"But the danger-"

Julian turned to Kaelen, his eyes pleading. "Kaelen, tell him! Tell him Silas won't let him just live his life!"

Kaelen walked over, placing a steadying hand on Julian's shoulder.

He looked at Mr. Vane with a new-found respect.

"Julian, listen to me. My father is a bad person-he is a monster in many ways.

But Silas Thorne is a man of his word. He gave his word that the debt is paid.

In our world, a vow made at the end of a trial is sacred.

If he touches your father now, he shatters his own reputation.

He won't risk his crown for a man who is no longer part of the game.

Your father is safe here because Silas is too proud to break a promise. "

Julian looked at his father, seeing the stubborn love in his eyes, then back to Kaelen. The fear began to ebb away, replaced by a bittersweet understanding. He couldn't force his father to leave his memories behind.

The Final Surrender

That night, their last in the city, the atmosphere was thick with romance and the quiet peace of a resolved heart.

In the privacy of their room, Kaelen pulled Julian into his arms. The intimacy was slow, a silent language of gratitude. Kaelen kissed Julian's forehead, his hands sliding down to lock firmly with Julian's.

"From tomorrow," Kaelen murmured against Julian's skin, "I don't want you to ever feel like a pawn or a debtor. Every breath you take in that cottage belongs to you. I am just the man lucky enough to stand beside you."

Julian pulled Kaelen down for a deep, lingering kiss. "You saved us, Kaelen. You gave my father his freedom and you gave me a future. Promise me... when we get there, we leave the violence behind?"

"I promise," Kaelen breathed, his voice a vow. "I'll bury the guns. I only need my hands to hold you and protect our home."

As the moon rose over the skyline they were leaving behind, they clung to each other-two survivors ready to trade a kingdom of blood for a life of light.
