Chapter 2 — The Cruise Ship Rules

The suite door had barely clicked shut behind them before Julia had Mark’s shirt buttons half undone, her back still warm from the sun, her mouth finding his with a hunger that had been building since somewhere around the second time Chloe had said the word hands.

“You were very patient with her,” Mark said, against her mouth, working the zipper of her dress down her spine one slow inch at a time.

“I was delighted. There’s a difference.” Julia shrugged the dress off her shoulders and let it pool at her feet, standing in the low evening light coming through the balcony doors in nothing but the lace she’d worn under it, and watched Mark’s eyes do the thing they always did — slow, thorough, like he still hadn’t quite gotten used to the fact that he got to look.

“Did you see her face when I said ten years? She looked at me like I was furniture.”

“She looked at me like I was a vending machine.” Mark got his own shirt the rest of the way off, and Julia’s hands found his chest immediately, mapping ground she’d mapped a thousand times and still wanted every time like it was new. “Very confident vending machine, though. I’ll give her that.”

“She’s twenty-one and gorgeous and has never once in her life had a man say no to her.” Julia backed toward the bed, pulling him with her by his belt. “She’s not wrong to be confident. She’s just wrong about which one of us actually decides how this week goes.”

Mark got her down onto the mattress and settled his weight over her, one hand finding the back of her knee to hook it around his hip, and kissed his way down her throat with the unrushed attention of a man who had genuinely never once in twenty-two years gotten bored of this exact task.

“You’ve been thinking about this since the pool deck,” he said, against her collarbone, feeling the way her breath had already gone short.

“I’ve been thinking about a lot of things since the pool deck.” Her hands found his hair, holding him where his mouth had settled at the curve of her breast, hips already rolling up to find friction against nothing. “Get inside me and I’ll tell you all of them.”

“Not yet.” He kissed a slow line down her stomach instead, working the lace down her hips as he went, and settled between her thighs with no intention at all of rushing past this part. “I want you loud before I even get inside you.”

He put his mouth to her without preamble, slow and thorough, and Julia’s whole body arched off the mattress at the first long drag of his tongue, hands fisting in the sheets instead of his hair. Whatever sound tore loose from her, there was nothing composed left in it.

“Mark—” Her hips rolled up to meet him, chasing the exact rhythm he’d built her toward a thousand times before and somehow still made feel new. “God, right there, don’t you dare stop—”

He didn’t. He built her slow and deliberate, alternating pressure and pace the way twenty-two years of practice had taught him worked best on her specifically, two fingers curling deep inside her while his tongue kept working, until her thighs had started trembling around his head and her voice had dissolved into something wordless and desperate.

She came apart first that way, back bowing hard off the bed, a cry breaking loose that the empty suite did nothing to muffle, and Mark stayed with her through every aftershock before finally crawling back up her body, mouth still wet, watching her catch her breath with open satisfaction.

“There’s one,” he said, low.

“There’s several more where that came from, I hope.” Julia pulled him down for a kiss, tasting herself on his mouth without any hesitation at all, and reached between them to guide him where she wanted him. “Now. I’ve waited long enough.”

He settled between her thighs and pushed into her slow, giving her body the half-second it always wanted to adjust before the rest of him followed, and the sound she made was low and satisfied and entirely unguarded, her whole body still sensitive and open from what his mouth had just done to her.

“There he is,” she breathed, hips already moving to meet him.

He gave her a few strokes like that, deep and even, patient in the way that came from complete confidence rather than any lack of want, before he flipped her over onto her stomach and pulled her hips up to meet his, sliding back into her from behind with one long, filling stroke that punched a sharp cry out of her into the pillow.

“That’s more like it,” she managed, forearms braced, pushing back into every thrust.

“You liked watching her flirt with me.” Mark’s hand found her hip, holding her steady, his pace still slow but deep enough that every drive dragged a fresh sound out of her. “Don’t lie to me. I felt you get warm standing right there at the rail.”

“I liked watching her think she had a chance.” Julia’s voice had gone thin, breathless, punctuated by the rhythm of him. “That’s not the same thing. Or — it is. It’s exactly the same thing. God, don’t stop.”

“She’s going to want me to breed her, you know.

” Mark said it conversational, almost idle, like he was commenting on the weather, even as his hips kept working her steady and deep.

“Girl like that, this confident, this young — she’s not thinking about a fling.

She wants the fantasy. Wants to feel like she’s the one who finally gets something real out of a married man. ”

Julia laughed, breathless and delighted, the sound breaking apart into a moan when he drove deep on the next stroke. “God, say that again.”

“Which part.”

“The part where a twenty-one-year-old thinks she’s going to get you raw and full and desperate, and doesn’t know you’ve been fixed for six years.

” Julia pushed back against him harder, chasing her own rhythm now.

“She’s going to beg you to fill her up like it’s the biggest risk of her life, and it’s going to be the safest thing either of you ever does. ”

“You like that.”

“I love that.” She reached back blind, found his hip, urged him faster. “I want to hear every word of it. Every filthy thing she says when she thinks she’s finally cracked you. I want it before it even finishes happening.”

Mark’s grip on her hips went firm, driving harder now, chasing something in both of them that had been building since a pool deck and a dress with nothing under it. “Every word,” he agreed, low and rough. “Nothing gets kept. Not from either of us.”

“Not from either of us,” Julia echoed, and came apart around him with a cry she didn’t bother muffling, the whole suite theirs, nobody to hear but open water and gulls.

He followed her a dozen strokes later, groaning low as he buried deep and stilled, both of them breathing hard into the quiet that came after.

Julia didn’t let him catch his breath for long. She turned beneath him, easing him out of her with a small, satisfied sound, and pushed him onto his back before he’d fully registered the change.

“Give me a minute,” he said, still catching air, “and I’ll—”

“I don’t need a minute. I need my mouth on you.” She was already moving down his body, slow about it, savoring every inch of the trip down. “Sit back. Let me work.”

He’d gone soft, spent from the two of them together, and Julia took him into her mouth anyway, tasting the both of them tangled together on him, salt and her own slickness and the plain warmth of him even at rest. He was pliant like this in a way she rarely got to feel — thick and heavy and yielding against her tongue, bending easy with the pressure of her lips instead of holding firm the way he did fully hard, and she took her time exploring exactly that, working her mouth slow around the give of him, feeling him shift and soften and settle against her tongue with every pass.

“Julia—” His hand found the back of her head, not guiding, just resting there, his voice gone rough with something that wasn’t quite need yet but was getting there fast.

She hummed her answer around him and felt the vibration land somewhere he clearly wasn’t expecting, because his hips gave one involuntary jerk beneath her, the first real sign of him coming back.

She kept at it slow and patient, savoring the physical fact of him hardening in her mouth — the way he thickened by degrees instead of all at once, the give of him firming up inch by inch until what had been soft and yielding under her tongue was thick and insistent again, filling her mouth in a way that pulled a satisfied sound out of her own throat.

“That’s — Christ, that’s a different feeling entirely,” Mark said, breath gone short, watching her work him from soft to full hardness with open fascination. “Doing that from nothing. Feeling it happen instead of just being there already.”

“That’s the whole point.” She pulled back just enough to drag her tongue up the length of him, watching him twitch fully hard now, and pressed one last kiss to the head of him before climbing back up his body, satisfied with her own work.

“I like watching you get there from zero. Different kind of hungry.”

“We’re not done,” she said, against his mouth, already positioning herself over him.

“I noticed the tone.”

“I want to ride you while we set the actual rules. I think better when I’m doing two things at once.

” She pushed him onto his back and climbed over him, still slick, still wanting, and sank down onto him in one slow, unbroken slide that had them both groaning at the same time.

“Rule one. Full transparency. Every touch, every look, every filthy thing either of them says gets reported back before the day’s over. ”

“Agreed.” His hands found her hips, guiding rather than steering, letting her set the pace. “Rule two.”

“Rule two, we play the game properly. We let them think they’re winning.” Julia rolled her hips in a long, deliberate circle, watching his jaw tighten at the sensation. “No tipping our hand early because it’s fun to watch them squirm. We let this build all the way out.”

“And rule three.” Mark’s hand slid up to find her breast, thumb dragging over a peak already hard from more than just the air conditioning. “Because there’s always a rule three with you.”

“Rule three.” Julia’s rhythm picked up, chasing her own building heat now, hands braced on his chest. “We claim them separately before we ever bring them together. I want Sienna soft and sure of herself before I take her apart. You get Chloe loud and confident right up until the second you’re not letting her be either anymore. ”

“That’s not a rule. That’s a plan.”

“It’s both.” She leaned down to kiss him, rhythm never breaking, and felt his hands tighten on her hips in answer. “Ten years of this cruise and I’ve never once wanted anyone the way I want to watch you finally give that girl exactly what she’s begging for.”

He drove up to meet her, harder now, both of them chasing the same finish, and when she broke apart around him a second time, walls clenching tight enough to drag him under with her, he held her through it with both hands braced on her hips, groaning her name into the humid dark of the cabin.

Julia didn’t move once it was over. She let herself go loose and heavy against his chest instead, still joined, still full of him, his heartbeat slowing under her ear as the last of it drained out of both of them.

“Six days,” she murmured, tracing a lazy line down his sternum, not bothering to lift her head. “Two girls. One trap.”

“Six days.” Mark’s hand smoothed slow down her spine, no urgency left in it at all, content to just hold her exactly where she was. “Let’s see how confident she still is by Thursday.”

Neither of them made any move to separate.

He reached out with his free hand and dragged the sheet up over both of them, still tangled together, still one body instead of two, and Julia hummed something soft and satisfied against his collarbone as sleep pulled at her, the ship’s engines a steady hum beneath everything, her weight settling heavier and heavier against him until she’d gone fully slack, still seated on him, still his, all the way into sleep.
