CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
He pulled back with inches to spare, dropping his hands.
“Shit…”
“Miko?”
He backed away, getting to his feet. “Sorry.”
I stood too. “What just happened?” My heart continued to flutter and do loops in a frenetic beat.
“I can’t do this.”
“Miko?”
He made a sharp exit, leaving me breathless and hard and as confused as the moment I’d opened the door.
Storm.
Stars.
Blood.
After blowing out the candles rather than following him, my energy levels drained away. I collapsed onto the sofa, a pounding in my skull, hot prickling in my eyes.
“Miko…”
Curling up into a ball, I lay in the dark for hours, trying to sleep away this weird turn. Instead, I cried a little, I pined for home, and contemplated running away in a moment of fragmented reason.
Whatever happened between us, it made him run.
I guess I wasn’t that soothing to him after all.
And why did I care so much?
