Chapter 31
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
ORION
Motes of dust drifted across shafts of sunlight breaking through the slats above our heads.
I sneezed, panicking I’d messed things up. But my hand remained in Miko’s cool one, my job as an anchor still in play.
Miko, Trev, and Malorie drew slow, deep breaths, their eyes closed.
Nothing told me I was Miko’s anchor. No change in me, no sensation in my palm. Not one hint. At the same time, I understood my importance.
I sent positive thoughts to the two men, focusing hard on their safety as well as a helpful outcome.
Paige smiled at me.
I smiled back. Playing this waiting game with wild anticipation was making my skin hot.
There was some commotion from upstairs, then heavy footsteps pounding across the floor, dust sprinkling our circle.
“Guard the door!” I heard Andrew yell. “They’re through the fences!”
Oh, stars! Zombies? Lance?
No. No. No.
“Bollocking shit!” Arlo bellowed back.
A rumble like thunder, but not quite.
Were those horses?
No. That couldn’t be right.
I tightened my grip on Miko, meeting Paige’s wide eyes. She sniffed the air, brows pinched together.
“What is it?’ I whispered.
“Horses. Shifters. Lance, I think. And fae. A lot of fae.”
