Chapter 34 #2

“Where on earth did you find this idiot?” I ask, looking at him with a frown.

I’m not the best at hand-to-hand; even after years of practice, I’d say I’m proficient.

I run my hand through my hair. Truthfully, I don’t like hurting people.

I will if forced to do so. But compared to Kung Fu Master, who is again rolling around on the floor, I’m practically a ninja. “He makes a terrible henchman.”

I glance back up and cringe at the livid look Taser Vamp is giving me. I hope he hasn’t got an itchy trigger finger. I give him a rueful smile and I hold my hands up again. I shrug. “Hey I was defending myself. You can’t zap me for that.”

“He’s my brother,” he says through gritted teeth.

“Oh, that sucks,” I reply with another glance at the floor.

He nods to the tall vampire, who now cautiously side-steps towards me.

He pulls out a magic void bracelet—it’s a plastic magical band the guilds use.

Aw, bless him, he has all the best toys today.

I helpfully hold my arm out for him. With a trembling hand, he slaps it onto my wrist. With a snap, the plastic tightly wraps around.

What it should do is deaden my magic. It voids magic completely, helpful if you have to arrest a magical creature.

I don’t have the heart to tell them they don’t work on me. Oops.

The two vampires back away and warily watch me.

No doubt they are waiting for something dramatic to happen.

Perhaps a good old head-spin? The third is still on the floor gurgling.

I give them a toothy smile and tap my foot again…

time’s ticking, and we need to get this show on the road.

I can’t spend my entire day being kidnapped.

“Why hasn’t she changed,” the tall vampire says out of the side of his mouth. His buddy stares at me, his lips part, and he shrugs his shoulders haplessly.

“I dunno,” he says.

I tuck a piece of my blonde hair behind my ear. “This is what I look like,” I say, doing jazz hands. I rub my mouth to stop myself from smiling. Their confusion is adorable. “Were you expecting something different?”

“I didn’t expect you to be so pretty,” Tall Vampire mumbles.

“Oh…urm, thanks.” I think. I’ll take it as a compliment. At least he isn’t trying to be creepy. “So your boss?” I need to get them back on track. Their dumbfounded expressions are now making me feel uncomfortable.

I’ve already decided that I’m going to go with them. I need some questions answered, like how they found this safe house and how they knew that I’d be here. It shouldn’t have happened and I need to plug the leak. It’s not just me I’m worried about. People are counting on me.

I’m also fascinated, so I will play along. I need to know who decided it was a good idea to come and…kidnap me? Ha.

“Yeah, our master has been after you for some time,” Taser Vamp replies.

I shrug. I do like a good bad-guy confrontation.

Their boss doesn’t know what shit he has dug up.

Thinking about it, I’ve never done a confrontation looking like me before.

I am like a walking trap. I might look like an easy mark, but I’m not… I am far from it.

“Terry, get the cameras.” Terry, formerly known as Tall Vampire, scampers off to do Taser Vamp’s bidding.

I’m disturbed as I watch him pluck tiny cameras from obscure places around the apartment.

Cameras are dotted all around. I cringe…

that means someone somewhere has evidence of me attempting to twerk. I blame Sam for teaching me.

I wonder if this is the only safe house that’s compromised. I doubt it. I groan. Crap, I’m not looking forward to all that extra work. At least that answers one of my questions, of how they knew I was here.

I am unceremoniously marched out of the building with the Taser poking into my side.

These guys have watched way too many films.

Kung Fu Master is trying desperately to intimidate me—he keeps knocking into me and growling.

When he shoves me into the side of the car and I painfully bang my hip—ouch—I lose my temper; I spin around and smack him on the back of the head.

“Knock it off. You’re acting like a right wanker.

” I growl, “Knock into me again and I’ll pull your bloody arm off.

” I poke my finger in his face. He growls back and flashes his fangs.

Oh no, he bloody didn’t. If he does that again, I will pull his fangs right out of his stupid head.

Stuff it. I allow my eyes to bleed black.

His eyes widen in disbelief, and he drops them to my wrist and the void band.

He stumbles back away from me and glances about, opening and closing his mouth like a goldfish. His entire body shakes and he drops his eyes to the floor submissively.

“Your attitude is going to get you killed,” I hiss at him. “Think before you act. Now get in the car.” I push him for good measure and he hurries away to the front of the car and jumps in.

As I slide into the back of the car, I look up at the street CCTV camera. I give it a nod and mouth the words, “Track me.”
