Black Elk

Pine Ridge Reservation

After everyone had settled back down and drinks were poured, Greyeagle motioned for Kade to take a walk with him. Once they were well away from the others, Greyeagle turned to face him.

“After you mentioned David Walks Far, I did some thinking,” Greyeagle said.

“About?” Kade asked.

“The two hunters who were killed at that campground,” Greyeagle said.

“What about them?” asked Kade. “That wasn’t us.”

“What?” Greyeagle said. “Then what happened?”

“Believe it or not,” Kade replied, “we were there doing an investigation of our own. Whatever gutted them went to great lengths to make it look like it was us.”

“Is that why you cleaned up the crime scene?” asked Greyeagle.

“Mostly,” Kade said. “We figured they’d blame it on us.”

“They didn’t,” Greyeagle said. “They listed the official cause of death as a bear attack.”

“Bears don’t leave men strung up in trees,” Kade countered.

“No, they do not,” agreed Greyeagle. “Then who or what else could have done it?”

“From what we found at the scene,” Kade said, “I think we have at least one more wolf operating on the rest. Maybe a small pack.”

“Why didn’t you mention that before?” asked Greyeagle.

“We were a little busy,” Kade replied. “Our plate was pretty full.”

“So, what does that mean for us?” asked Greyeagle.

“It means there’s another shifter out there,” Kade answered. “Or a pack.”

“Then we must find them,” Greyeagle said. “But not tonight. Tonight, we celebrate.”

Kade and Greyeagle headed back to the fire, neither one catching the scent of another predator who was watching them from downwind. It could smell them, but they couldn’t smell it, which is exactly the way the beast wanted it.

A shadow within the shadows moved, and feverish yellow eyes caught the light just enough to reflect. When they stepped into the sparse light, Gilbert Two Dogs glared at the camp with feral eyes.

“Your time will come,” Gilbert muttered, then slipped back into the shadows and vanished.

Several other sets of eyes blinked for a moment, then vanished with him. The hunt would begin soon.

The End.
