Riley
Spending time with Jake, naked and wrapped up in him, is beyond my wildest expectations. I can’t imagine doing what we just did with anyone else. It’s blissful.
We’ve barely slept when morning arrives, yet I’m energized and invigorated.
“We should shower,” I suggest, giggling as Jake playfully slaps my ass.
“I know, but that feels too much like ending what we have in this bed,” he argues. “I don’t want it to end.” He pulls me into his embrace again and nuzzles my neck.
“Well, we need to eat something, at least. I’ll cook us breakfast.”
Jake follows me from the room, holding me close as I manoeuver around my tiny kitchen, his naked warmth filling me with giddy excitement.
The crunch of a key in the door startles us, and we share a confused glance. My heart stops before beating out of my chest as I remember who else has a key.
“Christy has a spare key,” I hiss, my thudding heart now plummeting to my feet.
Thankfully, my lower half is hidden behind the counter, and Jake grabs a towel from the laundry basket in time to cover my breasts as Christy appears in the doorway of my apartment.
She stops. Blinks. The crease in her forehead shows her confusion. The deep red flush high on her cheekbones reveals her anger.
I bite my lip. “Christy, I-I can explain—”
Too late. She’s already spinning on her heels and slamming the door behind her.
I turn to face Jake, my chest tight with sadness, my eyes welling with tears.
“It’s okay. She needs to get used to us being together.” Jake holds my waist tightly, pulling me against him like we’re two pieces of the same puzzle. He smooths his hand over my hair, pushing a tendril behind my ear. “It may feel odd, how we got here, but you and I are meant to be, .”
I want to believe him. I do. But what if he wants us to work out so much that he can’t see reason? This might only be a brief moment in time. I’ve known Christy since we met in college. We can’t alienate my best friend, his sister, for whatever this is between us. Can we?
“Stop overthinking,” he says, dropping his mouth to mine. “I’ve wanted you since the moment I met you. I kept my distance because of Christy, but when I saw you on that app, I knew I had to take my chance or risk losing you forever.” He kisses me again, making my knees soft. “I’m glad I took that chance.”
I’m torn between my powerful feelings for Jake and my love for my best friend. “Even if it means Christy disowning us?”
