Chapter 4 #2
A faint warmth pulses deeper in my chest, a subtle heaviness, tingling along the skin where the warm compresses have been. These early signs align perfectly with what Dr. Madsen previously mentioned.
My body is listening.
Later, under the hot water of the shower, steam blurs the tiles and my thoughts. That fullness is stronger now, not painful but present, like a part of me that’s been asleep is starting to stir.
When I step back into the bedroom, towel wrapped around me, I see him sitting on the edge of the bed, tablet in hand, glasses on, jaw set in full “COO mode.”
“You’re reading about it,” I tease.
“I’m studying,” he corrects, not looking up right away. “If I’m part of this, I’ll do it right.”
I come closer. “Medical journals?”
He finally meets my eyes. “Those. And other accounts. Couples who’ve done this. I want to know what you might feel before you do.”
Something thick and tender gathers in my chest. “You really want this?”
He locks the screen and sets the tablet aside. For once, it feels like the entire city falls away, leaving just the two of us and this one question.
“I want to build something with you,” he says.
The words land deeper than any confession I’ve ever heard. Build. It sounds so very Erik, steady, deliberate, and determined.
I cup his cheek, my thumb brushing the rough line of his stubble. “Then we’ll build.”
He exhales a quiet sound that feels like both surrender and a promise. Our foreheads touch. The knot of my towel becomes an afterthought. The scent of soap, his warmth, and the way his breathing softens as he leans into me, everything blurs into a single, wordless yes; neither of us speaks aloud.
Inside my chest, that tingling deepens, a responding echo. My body is listening. My heart already has.
Erik
I never realized how much discipline is required until now.
Every step of her induction protocol reads like a campaign plan: timelines, metrics, and projected outcomes, but this mission is made of trust instead of steel and numbers.
She adheres strictly to the regimen. I track her progress with the same intensity I give Halvorsen Corp’s quarterly reports.
Only this matters more.
I’ve quietly adjusted her diet: whole oats, fennel, rich soups she doesn’t have to think about, and more water than she’d drink on her own.
She rolls her eyes and calls me a "dictator nutritionist." She doesn’t know I’m up at 2 AM, reading hormone studies and logging reported side effects before she’s awake.
I’ve seen what exploitation looks like. In boardrooms, SableCorp attempted to utilize Bjorn's wife's body and pain as leverage. I want to do everything possible to protect Claire from that.
While she sleeps, I tighten the perimeter:
· New firewall on her store system
· Encrypted backups
· Motion sensors tied directly to my phone
· Flags on any Veritek-style signature within three blocks of her shop
On the surface, we look like any other couple walking down a Houston sidewalk. I gently place my hand behind her back. Her laughter rises easily into the night air.
But beneath that? I am always calculating. Always aware of exits. Shadows. Reflections in glass. Protection is instinct for me. Strategy is a habit.
And yet none of that is what shakes me.
Her body unconsciously aligns with mine as she leans into my side during dinner. The fenugreek leaves a subtle hint of maple in her hair. Her shy pride is evident when she lightly presses her palm over her chest and whispers, “I think it’s working.”
Sometimes, in the late afternoon, I watch her in the kitchen while she moves through the loft. Her shoulders are looser. Her smile comes quicker. A softer fullness gathers at her neckline. The way I look at her changes. It deepens. Warms. It becomes perilous in ways she's not yet comprehended.
So I break eye contact first. This reaction is due to the simplicity of my desire for her. Earning her trust is sacred.
My phone buzzes on the counter. Dr. Madsen.
“Halvorsen.”
“Hello, Mr. Halvorsen, it’s Dr. Madsen. I received Claire’s latest logs and labs.”
My spine straightens. “And?”
“She’s responding beautifully,” the doctor says. “Her prolactin response curve is higher than average for this stage. We were right; she’s a fast responder. If hydration and rest remain solid, she should be in full production very soon.”
Relief hits first. Then a sharper, deeper feeling: awe.
“Understood,” I say.
“And whatever you’re doing to keep her feeling safe?” Dr. Madsen adds. “Keep doing it. Oxytocin is doing half the work here.”
“Noted,” I answer, my voice quieter.
When the call ends, I find Claire in the living room, bent over the little journal we share for her schedule. She looks up as soon as she reads my face.
“Well?” she asks.
I hold out the prescription slip. “Dr. Madsen says you’re responding beautifully. She says you should be producing milk very soon.”
Her fingers brush mine as she takes the paper. Her eyes go bright and wet all at once. “So… it’s really happening?”
“Yes.” I step closer, crowding her gently against the edge of the couch. “It’s happening.”
“Thank you,” she whispers. “For not thinking this is… weird.”
“I don’t think it’s weird. I think it’s amazing.”
She laughs weakly, blinking fast. “Amazing?”
“You’re teaching your body to give,” I say. “That’s as sacred as it gets.”
Her breath stutters. “You always know what to say.”
“I don’t.” I shake my head. “I just know what I mean.”
She slides her arms around my waist and tucks herself under my chin. Her heartbeat settles into mine, slow and sure. She fits there as though she were perfectly designed for it.
“This moment feels like a pact,” she murmurs against my shirt.
“It is,” I say. “You’re not doing any of this alone. Not one step.”
Claire
His fingers press into my waist assuredly. His thumb traces down the line of my hipbone, smooth and flat against my skin, like he’s memorizing me. Heat blooms beneath his palm and spreads throughout my body.
“Do you trust me?” he asks, quieter this time somehow, as if asking permission became more serious now that I’ve already given it.
It’s not idle words. Never is, with him. When Erik offers a question like that, he is handing me control and asking for consent all at once.
“Yes,” I repeat. “I trust you.”
I don’t waver.
His exhale is a whisper, low and forceful, like he’s barely contained himself all evening.
“I won’t hurry you,” he continues. “And I won’t take more than you want to give."
“I want this with you. I feel ready,” I add softly.
His eyes sharpen, predator-like. Calculating. He looks at me the way he does when he has to make a choice that involves us both.
“I need you to say it clearly,” his voice is low now, slightly darker. “I need you to know you’re choosing it.”
Outside our windows, the city pulses. Cars drift lazily across the ceiling in waves of headlights and taillights. Lives move all around us, people completely untouched by the swell of heat between Erik and me in his loft.
Here, inside four walls lit only by street glow, there is only him and my hand pressing white knuckles against his shirt.
“I want us to make love together,” I manage this time, and though my voice cracks, it does not shake. “Please, Sir.”
Erik's thumb gently presses down and slides across my breast. The substantial contact leaves me breathless. Heat coils tight in my belly, familiar and low.
He doesn’t grab me or claim me… yet. He waits. Erik’s self-control has always amazed me.
I move forward until my swollen breasts bump against him.
I can hear his breath quickening just before mine does.
Something shifts inside of me when I press fully into him, palms flat against his waist. I've been experiencing this since he entered my life, and now I find myself staring into his eyes.
He looks as if he wishes to engulf me completely.
His hand cups my ass slowly, lightly, but solidly. He holds me like he holds everything else he loves in this world, with purpose, deliberately, and never without care.
I gasp.
“Claire,” Erik whispers, the name rumbling against my body.
When he says my name, I feel weak in the knees, not because he’s got the power to dominate me, but because he sees me.
There’s no desperation here. This is a choice. Erik leans forward until our foreheads touch, and one of his hands lightly presses at the small of my back. Minutes pass while I nod shakily, my breath stuttering.
“Tell me if you need me to stop.” His voice is rough with promise.
He will stop. I know he will. “I can’t tell you to stop because I never want you to,” I say, hands squeezing his waist possessively.
His jaw clenches, and a twitch of his teeth against his bottom lip shows that my response changes him from waiting to deciding.
“We will not do this leaning against the kitchen counter,” he murmurs. Confidence colors his words in a low, calm, and sure way.
Erik steps backward without ceremony. When he turns and begins walking toward the bedroom, I follow, obedient to his pull. My heartbeat thrums dangerously loud in my ears with each step I take.
He stops just inside the doorway, turning to regard me fully. Darkness fills the bedroom now, streetlight filtering in through pulled curtains. Everything sways softly in shadow.
I know he’s seeing me. When he speaks, his eyes rove over every inch of my body.
“You said you trust me.”
“I do.”
“Good.”
Erik’s voice is a low growl now. “You’re going to strip for me, Claire.”
They are not demands. No orders are shouted. They are requests given because I’ve consented.
“I want you to take your time,” he continues. “Slowly. And then, get on the bed.”
Heat flares between us, thick and real. He backs away, giving me space.
Erik
She follows my instructions beautifully, and lies there, waiting for me. Hovering over her, I reach up and grab one of her wrists, lifting it above her head, locking my fingers around hers in a strong, vise-like grip. “Hand up,” I grunt lowly.
