Chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE

CLAIRE

One week later…

Leander opened the shop for me this morning and texted a proud photo of the balanced till plus the delivery truck already logged. I love that I didn’t have to open this morning. Erik said he arranged it “just in case I needed the day,” and now I understand why.

I’m still wrapped in Erik’s towel when he carries me back to bed, his hands warm against my thighs, his breath steady against my shoulder. My chest is fuller, heavier, and more alive than it has ever been, and I can’t stop touching the spot where the first drops of milk appeared two days ago.

He sets me on the mattress, strips off the towel, helps me into a clean pair of panties, and places the towel under my breasts, then helps me settle back into the bed. He reaches to tuck the blanket around me; something stubborn rises in my chest.

“Moving in feels so fast,” I blurt. “It’s just… you asked me the other day, and…”

His hand pauses. “I barely know how to be someone’s girlfriend,” I whisper. “I’m still figuring out this whole dynamic between us. I don’t want to rush something and ruin it.”

He doesn’t get angry. He doesn’t flinch. He simply gazes at me, slow and deliberate, as if he's perceiving every minor tremor beneath my skin.

“Come here,” he murmurs.

I go without thinking, uncurling myself and moving closer to him. He pulls me into his lap, one hand on my hip, one on the base of my spine. The position is grounding, unavoidable, and intimate in a way that makes my breath tremble.

“Say what you really mean,” he says quietly. “Not the fear version.”

My voice breaks. “I’m afraid you’ll change your mind.”

His jaw goes tight. “No. I’m not that man.”

“You say that now…”

“I say that always.”

I swallow. “What if moving in changes things?”

“It will,” he says, brushing his knuckles down my cheek. “That’s the point.”

My heart stumbles. “What if I’m too much?”

He leans in until our foreheads touch.

“You’re not too much,” he murmurs. “You’re mine.”

Something inside me melts.

“And,” he adds, his voice dropping into something deeper, “your body made the decision before your mind did.”

Heat pools in my chest. He slides his thumb softly across the curve of my breast, just enough to feel the warmth there, as more droplets begin to appear.

He grabs two nursing pads we keep a stock of, among other lactation items that are on top of both nightstands so either one of us can get whatever I need as my breasts continue to produce more and more milk.

“You’re responding exactly like a bonded woman,” he says softly. “Your oxytocin spikes around me. Your lactation started early because you feel safe with me. You feel secure enough to learn more about our relationship dynamics.”

A shiver rolls through me.

“This,” he continues, thumb brushing lightly where more drops appear, “is your body telling both of us that this is permanent.”

I gasp. “Permanent?”

“Yes.” His mouth grazes my ear. “You are not doing this alone. Not the lactation. Not this relationship. There's nothing else in life that matters.”

Tears sting my eyes.

"And," he adds, his voice a rough whisper, "I didn't ask you to move in out of obligation. I asked because I want you in my home, in my bed, and in my arms full-time.”

“You do?” I breathe.

“Yes.”

He lowers me gently to the mattress, his body covering mine, not demanding, only anchoring.

“When your body began to give,” he murmurs, “I knew you were ready to receive.”

The words hit like heat blooming inside me.

“I’m not rushing you,” he whispers against my neck. “I’m meeting you where you already are.”

My breath trembles. “I still feel scared.”

“That’s fine,” he says, kissing the corner of my mouth. “Fear means it matters. But I will not let fear make your choices.”

I blink up at him. “So what now?”

“Now,” he says softly, “you lie here and let me take care of you.”

His hands glide up my sides, slow and reverent. “And when you’re ready…”

“Yes?” I whisper.

His smile is small, aching, and certain.

“I’ll have all your items moved in here before you can blink those lovely little eyes of yours,” he whispers. "You have provided me with all the information I require to know that you are my one and only.”

I exhale, long and shaking. He pulls me fully into his chest, stroking my hair until my breath evens.

“Erik?” I whisper loudly.

“Yes.”

“I want to want this, all of this, with you.”

His arms tighten around me. “Then we’re already halfway there, little one.”

ERIK

She falls asleep on my chest, breathing evenly in phases. She has a slight tremble in her body, and her hands instinctively tighten on my shirt, as if anticipating a force that could pull her away. Then release. Warm and yielding, she rolls limply against me, cheek pillowed over my heart.

She hasn’t slept like this in days. It changed when her milk went from drops to a substance.

Overnight, things went from possible to actual.

Now her breasts twitch painfully if she goes too long between sessions.

Demand built up faster than we had anticipated.

Dr. Madsen had chuckled at her during their last visit, congratulating her body on how well it was reacting to the induction protocol, but reaction requires sacrifice, as we’re learning, and in her case, sleep.

Her full breasts painfully emptied themselves without warning. She needed to pump more frequently, at least every couple of hours throughout the night.

Now the low whir of the pump’s machinery sings white noise to us both.

I’ve watched her sleep long enough to memorize the hitch in her breathing when stimulation begins and the sigh that escapes her as tension leaks from her frame once it lessens.

The doctor advised her oversupply would level out with time and regularity.

She encouraged herbal teas high in magnesium and other small lifestyle alterations to promote relaxation without sacrificing output.

But she’s exhausted. Bone tired. She sleeps now, though, curled against me.

She rests her palm flat against my chest. The hot wetness seeps through the cotton of her shirt as she continues to master balance. I don’t shift. I remain motionless even as numbness begins to creep into my arm beneath her. I will not disturb her sleep.

As I watch her chest rise and fall, an ancient feeling seeps into my bones. Love, yes. My protective instincts are so fierce they feel hungry but not needy. These instincts are primal and inextricably linked to her. She gave this to me. Her body is molding and changing.

She trusted me to bear witness to her transformation, to be the witness of her softening. Her body responded before she fully understood what she was offering. I felt it in the way she softened when my hand found her waist, in the way her breath changed when I held her close.

I remember she had jerked slightly when she first felt the droplets. Worry wrinkled her brow when production increased, and she didn’t yet know how to regulate.

Bringing her into my life like this wasn't a casual thing.

It allowed her to fall asleep at my side night after night, her legs tangled up with mine under the blankets, her hair falling onto my shoulder, and her breathing evening out until it was in sync with mine.

It allowed me to grow accustomed to her weight draped across my chest and how perfectly she fits there.

Possessiveness isn’t intimacy. Never has been.

Intimacy means I want her there beside me when I wake up.

It opens my eyes in the middle of the night to see that she didn’t leave and is still there.

It’s noticing the little things you start thinking about on your drive home: how she takes my pillow without asking, how she hums before lying down, how her hand reaches for me even when she’s asleep.

It’s about building something that feels ordinary on the outside, but deeply meaningful underneath. Shared blankets. Shared mornings. We share a connection that fills us instead of leaving us feeling empty.

When I look down at her sleeping against my chest, hair tangled over my shoulder, mouth slightly parted in proper rest for the first time in days, what moves through me isn’t ownership.

It’s something steadier. Something heavier.

I didn’t realize she had made me a promise until I was already living inside it.

She gave that to me when she said yes to living with me. When she reached for me, her fingers trembled, yet she didn't pull away. She could have retreated, laughed it off, or hidden in fear, but she didn't.

She leaned. That’s what undid me. There was vulnerability and real trust there, not performance or some fantasy version of surrender. This vulnerability only appears when someone chooses you and trusts you to handle it well.

I don’t take that lightly. When I think of her, it isn't about caging or owning her. It’s about responsibility. It’s about knowing she stepped toward me and deciding I will never let her regret that step.

She wasn’t allowing herself to be taken. She was giving herself to me to protect and cherish. And in that moment, she placed something around my heart that I do not believe will ever come free. That isn’t possession. That’s devotion.

Every time she gazes at me and consents to my grounding, the trust that is building in her eyes overwhelms me.

Two days later, boxes, halfway full, are stacked up near the doorway. Her books lined up with mine. Her teacups are neatly tucked away in my cabinets. Her sweaters hang next to my coats.

Home feels like us instead of the lonely bachelor pad it once was. I kiss the top of her head, pressing my lips in an attempt to get a taste of her. Lavender and chamomile. Warm and vibrant.

“Welcome home, little one,” I murmur against her skin.

To this life. To me. To us. Her lips brush mine, and she snuggles in closer beneath my chin as I wrap my arms around her. Right here, right now, this is home. I will break anyone or anything that tries to take what I cherish, as my ancestors can attest.
