Chapter 28

That was...unexpected

Amelia

Oh my god, oh my god, OH MY GOD!

I just let Alex finger me in the bathroom while everyone was downstairs, my mouth tastes like me, there’s boxers covered in cum hidden in my laundry hamper, and I am panicking.

Mom’s putting marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate bars onto a big platter when I walk into the kitchen.

“I’ve got the kids all out by the fire pit for s’mores.

If you see your dad, send him out back. I could use some help, but I’m benching you for the night because you did more than your fair share today.

” She doesn’t wait for an answer before walking out the back door.

Breathing a sigh of relief that I don’t have to interact with another human quite yet, I step out into the garage to grab a soda from the drink fridge and yelp when I see Dad, Alex, and Bean.

“Are you okay?” Bean asks.

“Yep.” It comes out as a squeak. I clear my throat and try again. “I’m fine. Dad, Mom’s on s’more duty and requesting your help.”

“That’s my cue then. If anyone else wants a s’more, you know where to get them.” He grins and heads out to the backyard.

“Why the hell are you out here where it’s a million degrees?” I ask Bean. “It’s worse than actually being outside.”

She holds up a joint. “Because your mom doesn’t let us smoke in the house anymore.”

I laugh as she lights it and takes a hit. “She never let us. We just did it when she wasn’t home.”

“That’s basically the same thing.”

“It is not.” I shake my head.

She looks at Alex.

“It’s really not, kiddo.”

“I mean, it’s close.” She shrugs and takes another hit.

“You’re going to be talking to your shoes again by the end of the night,” I tell her. She and Alex are going back to Portland to meet a few of his business associates later tonight.

A wide grin crosses her face. “That’s why I’m gonna wear cute shoes.”

“Well, at least you won’t be here, I can enjoy some peace and quiet.”

She throws an old fishing bobber at me. “It’s never quiet around here. Anyway, we’re going to leave soon.” She turns to Alex. “Dad, will you go grab me a s’more, and I’ll meet you out back in a minute?”

“Sure.” As he passes me on his way out the back door, his lips raise in a slight smirk that I want to slap right off his smug face. I narrow my eyes and force myself not to scowl.

Once he’s gone, I look over at my best friend, knowing she wants to talk about something and find her looking at me curiously.

“You okay, Bean?”

“I don’t know. I guess so.”

She holds the joint out to me, but there’s no way I’m putting my lips on it after sucking my cum off her dad’s fingers and then handing it back to her, so I shake my head.

“We’re almost at the finish line, and I haven’t seen my fiancé in almost two weeks.

He still hasn’t even met my dad. I thought they would get to spend at least a little bit of time together before the wedding stuff starts on Saturday.

Get to know each other.” She stabs the joint into the ashtray harder than is necessary.

“That’s why we stayed close today, because Calvin said he would come back this afternoon, but then he didn’t.

He’s just too busy partying with his friends… ” Her words trail off.

I hate when she gets all sad like this. Calvin’s climbing his way up my shit list.

“Say the word, Bean, and we’re out of here. Gas tank is full. Well, mine is. Canada, Mexico, airport, whatever.”

She wraps her arms around me. “I love you, Min.”

“Love you, too. How about tonight you just go have fun, drink some ridiculously overpriced specialty martinis, and enjoy your time with your dad.”

“Yeah, okay. Be prepared to receive many, many drunk texts from me.”

“Always prepared for that. You’ve texted me some really wild shit, you know.”

“I know.” She grins and wags her eyebrows.

An hour after they leave, I get a text from a friend asking if I want to meet up at Mickey’s and shoot pool or something. That sounds like more fun than sitting at home moping about Alex.
