Chapter 45
Alexander picked me up from work. The air was tense. His arrival was not planned. It felt heavy with meaning. I thought he was busy with his own deals. Not storming into the bookstore. I stood behind the counter. I was sorting new books.
The bell above the door chimed. It was a sharp sound. He walked in. His broad body filled the small room. His gray eyes swept the place. Like a hunter marking ground.
His gaze fixed on Liam, my boss. Liam was shelving books. He did not notice Alexander at first. Then he felt Alexander's stare.
Liam turned. His easy smile faded. He sensed the change in the air. "Hey, welcome," he said. His tone was polite but unsure. "Can I help you with anything?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. A muscle twitched. Jealousy flared in his eyes. It was raw and open. "I'm here for Elena," he said. His voice was low and rough. It cut through the room. It had a strong, possessive edge. "She's done now."
Liam blinked. He glanced at me. Then back at Alexander. He clearly felt the threat. "Oh, uh, sure. Elena, you didn't say you were leaving early."
I forced a tight smile. My stomach knotted. I stepped from behind the counter. The air around me grew thick. "I wasn't planning to," I said. My voice was short. I grabbed my bag. "I'll see you tomorrow, Liam."
The car ride began in heavy silence. The engine's growl was a faint pulse. A storm brewed beside me.
Alexander's presence filled the car. His hands gripped the wheel. His knuckles whitened. I felt his gaze burn into me. Unspoken words simmered.
Finally, he spoke. His voice was a low, rough growl. "That's the guy, isn't it? Liam. Thinks he has money to show off. Smirking at you like he has a chance."
I rolled my eyes. Frustration ignited fast. "Alexander, he's my boss. He was being polite. You're making too much of this."
He pulled the car to the side of the road. Tires screeched. He slammed it into park. His eyes blazed with fury. It pinned me to the seat. "Polite?" he roared. His voice was a thunderclap.
He twisted to face me. His body loomed. He filled the car with his power. "You call that polite? He's looking at you like you're his next prize. I saw it, Elena. Don't play dumb with me."
I shook my head. My voice rose to meet his. Defiance flared. Despite the tremor in my chest. "You're silly, Alexander! It's a job. Not a date. He's not after me. You can't act like a caveman. Not every time I talk to another man!"
His hands slammed the dashboard. The thud echoed. He leaned closer. His breath was hot on my face. His voice dropped to a threatening growl. "You think this is a game, Elena? I trust you. I don't trust him. You're mine, only mine. I will not let some smug guy think he can take what's mine."
I pushed back against the seat. My heart pounded. I met his glare. I refused to give in. "You don't decide that for me, Alexander! I took this job because I wanted it. Because I need something that's mine too. You can't just tell me to quit because you're jealous!"
His eyes narrowed to steel slits. His hand shot out.
It gripped my chin. He made me look at him.
His touch was firm and strong. "Jealous?
" he snarled. His voice was a low, dangerous rumble.
It vibrated through me. "This isn't jealousy.
It's owning you. You walk into that store daily.
He's there. Watching you. Talking to you.
Thinking he can get close. I won't allow it.
Do you hear me? I will burn that place down. Before I let him near you."
I pulled my chin free. My skin tingled where he held me. My frustration boiled over. I snapped, "You can't control everything, Alexander! I'm not your item. I need this job. I need you to trust me. Don't lock me in your world. Just because you can't stand others near me!"
His hand flexed. It hovered. As if to grab me again.
His eyes darkened. A storm of rage and purpose.
"Trust?" he growled. He leaned so close I felt his heat.
His voice was a soft blade. "I'd trust you with my life, Elena.
But I don't trust this world. And I surely don't trust Liam.
I'll do whatever it takes. To make sure no one threatens that.
Quit the job. Or I'll make sure nothing is left for you to go back to. "
I stared at him. My breath was rough. His control was like a tidal wave. It crashed over me. His words were a promise mixed with threat. And something deeper. Fear, maybe. Underneath the steel. "You'd really do that?" I asked. My voice trembled but was sharp. "Ruin it all just to control me?"
He didn't flinch. His gaze was steady. "If it keeps you safe. Keeps us whole. Yes," he said. His tone was low and final. "You're my family. My world. I won't lose you. Not to some bookstore guy. Or anything else. You want to fight me on this? Go ahead. But you won't win."
My heart pounded. Emotions swirled. Anger, fear. And a reluctant pull. Toward the fierce truth in his eyes. I hated his control. But I could not deny his deep claim. The way it held me. Even as it choked me.
"Fine," I said at last. My voice was soft. But it had a firm edge. My surrender was a choice. Not a defeat. "I'll quit. Not because you're forcing me. But because I want us to work, Alexander. I want balance. Not war."
His eyes flickered. A hint of triumph. The storm softened.
He nodded. His voice was a low, commanding rumble.
"Good," he said. His hand settled on my thigh.
Possessive but steady. "We'll find that balance.
But don't think I'm letting you go. You're mine, Elena.
And I'm yours. We'll make this work. My way, together. "
?????
When I got back, I walked around the living room. City lights glittered outside. A stark contrast to my inner turmoil. Sophia was napping.
The car fight replayed. His jealousy. His firm control. How he stormed into the bookstore. And claimed me. I said I'd quit. Now, the weight pressed on me. I did not know what to do.
The doorbell buzzed. It startled me. Rachel and Mia stood outside. Their faces showed worry and interest. I let them in.
Rachel, sharp and fiery, kicked off her boots. She flopped onto the couch. Her hair spilled. Mia followed, quieter. Her dark ponytail swung. She set coffee on the table. Her eyes scanned me with worry.
"Okay, tell us," Rachel said. She grabbed a latte. She leaned forward. Her voice cut through the quiet. "You texted 'emergency.' What happened? Did Mr. Control Freak get mad again?"
I sank into an armchair. My hands twisted in my lap.
The city's soft hum filled the room. "Yeah," I said.
My voice was shaky. I met their gazes. "He picked me up from work today.
He didn't tell me. He saw Liam. He lost it.
He thinks Liam is after me. He basically told me to quit.
We fought in the car. I... I said I would. But now I don't know what to do."
Mia frowned. She pulled a coffee from the carrier. She slid it to me. Her fingers lingered. "Wait, Liam? The cute bookstore guy? What happened?"
I took the coffee. Its warmth seeped into my palms. I sighed.
"Alexander walked in. Liam was just being nice.
Shelving books. Smiling. Normal stuff. But Alexander saw it as a big threat.
He told Liam I was done. He dragged me out.
In the car, he went off. He said I'm his.
He won't let Liam near me. He said he'd burn the place down if I didn't quit.
I told him I'd quit. To keep the peace. But.
.. I love that job. I can't leave Sophia. I don't know how to fix this."
Rachel snorted. She rolled her eyes. She sipped her latte. A faint foam mustache remained. "Classic Alexander. Storming in like a jealous bull." She leaned in. Her eyes sparkled. "So tell me. Is Liam really interested in you? Or is this just Alexander being paranoid?"
I shook my head. Frustration bubbled up.
"Liam's just my boss. He's friendly, sure.
But it's nothing. He's not flirting. Alexander is making too much of this.
But he won't listen. He's so... intense.
He says it's about keeping me safe. Keeping us together.
But it feels like he's crushing me. I don't know if I should quit.
Push back. Or what. I can't leave Sophia, though. She needs me."
Mia leaned forward. Her voice was softer but firm.
Her coffee was in her hands. "Elena, you can't let him control you.
I get it. Sophia is your heart. Leaving her is not an option.
But you need something for yourself too.
That job is your space. Don't let him take it.
Just because he can't handle a guy smiling at you. What did he say, exactly?"
I swallowed. His words replayed. His grip still felt real.
"He said I'm his. That he trusts me. But not Liam.
Not the world. He told me to quit. Or he'd make sure nothing was left.
It's like he's scared of losing me. But he's holding me tighter.
Instead of listening. I said I'd quit to stop the fight.
But now... I don't know if I can do it. I don't want to lose him or Sophia. But I'm losing myself."
Rachel smirked. She leaned back with a sigh. "Sounds like he needs a check on reality. Or his own leash. He's hot when he's protective, I'll admit. But this is too much. You have to stand up to him, Elena. Tell him he doesn't run your life. Sophia is a reason to stay. Not a chain to keep you here."
Mia gave Rachel a look. Then she turned to me.
Her tone was gentle but firm. "She's right, though.
You need to fight back. You can't just give in every time he gets mad.
Maybe talk to him again. Set some limits.
You love Sophia. And yes, you're stuck with Alexander's wildness.
But you don't have to give up everything. What do you want?"
I stared at the coffee. Steam curled up.
My mind was a tangle of fear and want. "I don't even know anymore," I admitted.
My voice cracked. "I want the job. I love the quiet.
The books. Feeling like I'm more than just..
. his. But I can't leave Sophia. She's been through too much.
I promised her I'd stay. Alexander is overwhelming.
But he's also... he's him. I don't know how to balance it all. "
The penthouse door clicked open. It was a sharp sound. I flinched.
Alexander walked in. His presence filled the room. His tailored coat was open. His dark hair was messy. His eyes swept over us.
Rachel on the couch. Mia sipping coffee. Me, frozen. My jaw tightened. A flicker of doubt crossed his face. He stopped. His boots thumped.
"What's this?" he demanded. His voice was a low growl. It sent a shiver down my spine. His gaze locked onto me. It pinned me in place. "Are you plotting something, Elena?"
Rachel grinned. Unbothered. She tossed her hair back. "Just girl talk, big guy. Don't get worked up."
Mia set her coffee down. Her face was calm but wary. "We're just catching up, Alexander. Elena had a rough day."
His eyes stayed on mine. They narrowed slightly. He stepped closer. His shadow fell over the table. "Rough day?" he repeated. His tone was hard. A king sensing trouble. "Care to tell me why?"
I swallowed. My heart raced. I set the cup down. My hands trembled. "We were... talking about work," I said. My voice was quieter than I meant. Caught between defiance and his stare. "About Liam and what happened."
His face darkened. His hand flexed at his side. He loomed over me. His voice dropped to a dangerous growl. "Liam again," he said. Each word was a deliberate blow. "Are you changing your mind, Elena? Because I thought we settled this."
Rachel and Mia exchanged a glance. The air grew thick. I faced him. My resolve wavered. But it held. "I don't know what I'm doing yet," I said. I lifted my chin. Despite the tremor in my chest. "That's why they're here. To help me figure it out."
Alexander's presence loomed. A storm cloud ready to break. His gray eyes stared into mine. The penthouse felt smaller. The walls closed in. Rachel lounged. Her smirk unwavering. Mia sat straighter. Her coffee forgotten. Her calm face hid her unease.
The air was thick. Charged with our unspoken clash. His will against mine. I clutched the armchair. My nails dug into the leather. I fought to hold my ground.
"Figure it out?" Alexander repeated. His voice was a low, rough growl.
It filled the room. Each word was a new claim.
He stepped closer. His boots thumped on the wood.
His shadow covered the city light. "What's there to figure, Elena?
You said you'd quit. You gave me your word. Or does that mean nothing now?"
Rachel snorted. She tossed her hair back. "Oh, come on, Alexander. Give her a break. She's not your pet."
His head snapped toward her. His glare was sharp. But she didn't flinch. Her grin grew wider. Mia cleared her throat. Her voice was steady but cautious. "Rachel has a point. Listening to her won't hurt you, Alexander. She's just trying to understand."
I swallowed. My throat was dry. I made myself meet his eyes. Their stormy depths pulled me in. They pushed me away. "I'm not breaking my word," I said. My voice trembled but was firm. It rose above the city hum.
"I just... I don't know if I can do it. Quit, I mean. I love that job, Alexander. It's not about Liam. It's about me. Having something that's mine. But I can't leave Sophia either. I don't know how to make this work. Not with you watching me so closely."
His jaw tightened. A muscle twitched. He leaned down. He braced his hands on the chair arms. He caged me in. His scent filled my senses. Cedar, leather, a hint of smoke. Overwhelming. Familiar. His face was inches from mine.
"You think this is about a job?" he snarled.
His voice was a soft whip. Low and commanding.
"It's about you. About us. That bookstore is a crack in the wall.
The wall I built to keep you safe, Elena.
Liam is a threat. Whether you see it or not.
I won't stand by. While he or anyone gets close enough to hurt you. "
I pushed back against the chair. My heart pounded. His heat pressed against me. His power was a wave. I couldn't escape it.
"Liam's not a threat!" I snapped. My frustration spilled over. My hands clenched into fists. "He's my boss. Nothing more. You're seeing things that aren't there, Alexander. It's making me crazy! I need space. I need to breathe. And you're stifling me with this... control."
His eyes narrowed. A storm brewed. He straightened.
His hands flexed. As if fighting to grab me.
"Suffocating?" he growled. His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
It made me shiver. "You think I'm the one suffocating you?
I'm the one keeping you alive. Keeping Sophia alive.
You want space? Fine. Take it. But don't expect me to watch you walk into danger. Because you're too stubborn to see it."
Rachel leaned forward. Her tone was sharp and teasing. "Danger? From a guy stacking books? Calm down, big guy."
Mia gave her a warning glance. Then she turned to me. Her voice was softer. "Elena, he's scared. You can see it. But you're right too. You can't live like this. Maybe there's a middle way?"
Alexander's gaze flicked to Mia. Then back to me. His face was unyielding. But a flicker of doubt crossed it. "Middle way?" he scoffed. His tone showed disdain. "There's no middle way for my family. You're either in or out, Elena. And you're not out."
I stood. My legs were shaky. But my resolve hardened.
I faced him. The coffee table was a thin barrier.
"I'm not out," I said. My voice rose. A mix of anger and despair.
"I'm in. For Sophia. For you. But I can't be a shadow in your world, Alexander!
I need something for me. Something you don't own.
I'm not asking to leave. I'm asking you to let me live. "
For a moment, he didn't move. His chest rose and fell. His eyes searched mine. They stripped me bare.
Then he stepped around the table. He closed the distance fast. His hand cupped my face.
His grip was both firm and pleading. His thumb brushed my cheek.
"You think I don't see you?" he murmured.
His voice was rough. Quieter now. A crack in his strong facade.
"I see everything. Every damn thing you do, Elena.
I'm not trying to own you. I'm trying to keep you. I can't lose you. Not after..."
He stopped. His words caught. I froze. My breath hitched.
I caught the raw edge in his voice. The unspoken weight of what he wouldn't say.
Rachel and Mia went still. The room held its breath.
I reached up. My hand trembled. It covered his.
"After what?" I whispered. My frustration softened.
I searched his eyes for the truth he always hid.
His jaw worked. His grip tightened briefly.
Then he exhaled. A sharp sound. He dropped his hand.
He stepped back. As if the contact burned.
"After everything," he said. His tone hardened again.
But the crack remained. A glimpse of the man under the king.
"You want the job? Keep it. But you don't go alone.
My men will be there. Watching. That's the limit, Elena. Take it or leave it."
I stared at him. My heart pounded. His giving in sank in. It was a hard-won deal. Carved from his need to control. "Okay," I said. My voice was steady now. A fragile peace formed. "I'll take it. But you have to trust me, Alexander. I'm not running. I'm staying. For us."
Rachel let out a low whistle. It broke the tension. She leaned back. "Well, damn. That's almost sweet. In a scary dictator way."
Mia smiled faintly. She picked up her coffee again. "It's a start," she said. Her eyes were warm. They met mine. "You've got this, Elena."
Alexander didn't respond. His gaze stayed on me.
A storm held back. But not gone. He nodded once.
Sharp and final. Then he turned toward the hall.
His boots echoed. He muttered, "I've got calls to make.
" But he paused at the doorway. He glanced back.
His voice was a low growl. "Don't push me too far, Elena.
I'm giving you this. But you're still mine. "
As he left, I sank back into the chair. My hands trembled. I grabbed my coffee. The warmth grounded me. Rachel grinned. She nudged my foot. "You just calmed the beast a little. How does it feel?"
I exhaled. A shaky laugh escaped. I glanced at Mia. Then the empty hall. "Like I'm still on a tightrope," I said. My voice was soft. "But at least I have a little room to walk now."
Mia reached over. She squeezed my hand. "You're stronger than you think," she said. Her tone was quiet but sure. "He knows it too. That's why he's giving in."
I nodded. The weight of the day settled over me.
