Chapter 15

VALANCE

Wrapped in endless chains, gagged, a hood thrown over my head. The metal bit into my naked flesh as they carried me from the empty cabin they’d dragged me to a little while ago. Out into the cold air again. I couldn’t see, only feel, crippled by exhaustion.

No anger came to save me. My magic was out of bounds, any emotional connection severed for the time being. Emotions played a big part in my power. The wrong kind left me impotent. Though the magic wouldn’t work out at sea anyway, unless there was something of the earthly elements within this ship.

Maybe the wood? Call to the dead trees that gave their lives to it.

Not likely.

Lifted and dragged and placed into a smaller boat. At least that is what I ascertained from the actions beyond this darkness within the hood.

I could breathe through my nose and around the rubbery gag pressing painfully against my teeth. Men and women spoke in thick Gentry accents around me. A constant rocking turned my stomach. A blanket was thrown over me as the wind howled stronger, as water sprayed into the vessel.

Where are you taking me?

Well, I knew where, didn’t I? To Spring Keep, to meet my fate.

So much for a becoming in the north.

Kormac… Falling away from me, the distance between us torture.
