Chapter Fourteen – Luna
Chapter Fourteen
Luna
Had I done it? I chewed on the inside of my lip, lying on the couch.
I’d never tried being honest and scared before.
I’d spent the intervening hours after seeing my new Master at Jack’s, working myself up into a state with memories of my mother and the future that would claim me if I couldn’t get a vampire to change me.
It’d been embarrassingly easy to really cry.
But it’d been worth it! The look he’d given me at the end, before the dawn had come—he’d been thinking about biting me—and more.
If Jack turned me first, would I still need my strange other Master? Which one would I rather be linked to for eternity? My current Master would have more power, clearly—but Jack would be less bossy. Both of them were likely equally neglectful.
I flatted the sheets out over myself. Between Jack shoving me away and my other Master’s sudden abandonment in the car—I was a slave, after all. It wasn’t unusual to feel disregarded.
But it hurt more now. I’d been so close to always mattering, to earning my own slaves which I could then in turn ignore. I was sniffling ruefully, still feeling sorry for myself, when I heard a tap at the door.
Girl Scouts or solicitors. Goddammit.
I swept the sheets off and went to the door, opening it without looking through first—whoever was on the other side deserved the version of me they were going to get.
I found Zach there—that blonde boy from the other morning. I knew his name from hearing Jack call it out several times.
“Hey,” he said, clearly surprised I’d answered.
“Hey yourself,” I said. “Jack’s not here right now.”
He took me in. I looked like I’d just rolled out of bed and possibly onto another bed made of nails, and then rolled off that one too. “Are you okay?”
“It’s been a long night. Can I take a message? I’d like to get back to sleep.”
He glanced behind me, to where my bed on Jack’s couch was clear. “Uh, sure. Just—tell Jack I came by?”
“Sure.”
He nodded then stepped back—then inhaled as I began to shut the door. “Actually—don’t tell him I was here? I shouldn’t have come by.”
I snorted. “I know how that feels. I’ll give him whatever message you want.”
“Thanks,” Zach said, dropping his shoulders and clearly feeling sheepish.
“Don’t worry about it. We should form a support group or something.” Even if Zach wasn’t a true bloodslave, Jack cared for him—which made him possibly useful for me.
Zach laughed. “Probably. I’m in apartment twenty-one. And my name is Zach.”
“I’m Luna,” I said, smiling at him before closing the door.
