Chapter 42 Carina
Forty-Two
CARINA
“Did you see her neck? We didn’t count on this.”
The voice is male. Hesitant. Close by.
“Mom claims it won’t matter. Fucking a shifter only sullies her. How I see it, she’s already halfway turned away from Hecate.”
A female voice, reluctant, closer.
That isn’t true.
“Do you sense it in her?” he asks.
“Yeah. She took the Darkness, which means we’re halfway there.”
Halfway to what?
“You notice how she looks exactly like her?”
“That bitch betrayed us. If only Carina didn’t look like her, it’d make her more tolerable.” The woman’s tone is packed with a different kind of Darkness.
Who do I look like? Are they talking about my birth mother?
“Addie, be nice.”
Addie. A name to remember.
“How’s it feel, knowing if the past went differently, you two would be bonded?”
Say what?
There’s a pause before the guy murmurs, “We wouldn’t be in this mess, which would be a blessing. Instead, everything has to be done the hard way. Either way, thrilled actually.”
“It could still happen, you know. If Mom chooses to make a point to Morgan, she might still go forth with the union. It’d be a quicker way to bring her into the Darkness.”
Wait…
A sniff. “I’d rather not.”
“That’s only because you’re interested in him.”
“It has nothing to do with that, and more the fact that I prefer dick over pussy.”
“Like you’d actually have to fuck her. It’s just a union. Very minor.”
“A sacred bond that inevitably merges our souls and magick. Yeah, so avoidable. Besides, don’t you feel it? Her soul is already claimed.”
It is?
“She better hope it isn’t. Mom might lose her shit if this one slips through her fingers too.”
“Too? Harlow turned Dark. She’s out there, and it’s not as if we don’t know where to find her.”
I need to pay attention. This is the kind of information I’ve come for.
The male continues. “The vampire will fight tooth and nail to keep her from us. Cedric said he’s not one of them. That he doesn’t believe in what we’re doing.”
She scoffs. “He’ll come to understand when we’re ripping his Bride from him.”
Harlow and Alec need to be warned so they can hide.
“Should we be talking about this in front of her? What if she’s waking up?”
I think I am.
The female sighs, long and drawn out—annoyed. “She isn’t. It’s been hours and not a twitch. I’ll let Mom know.”
Steps pace away. With only the guy remaining, I should open my eyes and face whatever this is.
Instead, remnants of their spell from earlier sweep me back under.
