?Little witch, this isn’t the way. Please come back down to me.?
Like he was stirred from an enjoyable dream, opened his eyes, revealing pupils of a deep violaceous shade. He wondered if this was what addiction felt like, if the power coursing through his body would consume him completely. But something inside reminded him that the voice in his head wasn’t magic. It was his vampire lover, his undead best friend.
His mind told him to fight the human emotions, to focus instead on the supernatural powers flowing through his body. ? I can feel her power inside of me, Ri—the power of my greatest ancestor and nemesis alike—and I’m going to use it.?
“!” Uriah called out.
The witch realized his voice was coming from below him now, and it was like the soft hum of electricity that was occupying his mind disappeared. “Uriah,” he mumbled as emotion returned to his face in the form of a concerned frown. “This is what needs to be done.”
“Invoking the most powerful magic of all time?” Uriah shouted up at . “ And on a school night?”
made eye contact with the vampire. “I’m sorry.”
“You told me all those potions were safe, little witch,” Uriah shouted up at him.
“Kill the vampires!” Luna’s wolf voice bellowed through the field. “Kill the traitorous Dark Moon wolves and their witch allies. I’ll handle the little floating one.”
found Luna’s threats an easy way for him to tune out Uriah’s voice and focus on controlling his new powers. “Odessa, I fully invoke thee and all the powers of my magical bloodline,” he chanted as the smaller werewolves dispersed from Luna’s side and swarmed his friends like ants fleeing from a human footstep.
“I did so enjoy having a witch as part of my pack,” Luna teased . “Maybe I’ll make you mine.”
“ Not a chance, ” he replied, a force field forming around his body as he sent purple bolts of lightning raining onto Luna and her minions.
The lightning bolts singed Luna’s fur, ripped open the turf in several spots on the field, and sent a pack of three werewolves flying through the air while on fire.
“My turn,” Luna said as she pounced high in the sky.
Freddy Fredericks’ voice echoed through the stadium speakers as he continued his live broadcast via the circling helicopter. “ Folks, after a meeting with our producers, we’ve determined that flying above the Mystic Hollow University football field in these weather conditions should be safe. We’re circling back to the stadium now.”
Reaching ’s height, Luna smashed into the protective magic shield surrounding him. The deflection of the force field sent her flying back. In an attempt to catch herself, the giant werewolf latched onto the approaching helicopter, dragging it down slowly with her as she fell. “How about this, then?” Luna asked, using all her might to fling the aircraft into .
Uriah watched anxiously as the helicopter went hurtling through the air at full force.
“No way!” exclaimed, his face stunned as the chopper smashed into his defense shield and exploded.
His body tense, the witch trusted that his powerful magic could maintain the shield through the initial crash. But as the wreckage erupted into a fiery explosion, the purple force field cracked like a mirror busting in slow motion. could feel the heat of the fire on his forearms and face. He closed his eyes as the sound of a secondary explosion filled his ears, but then there was silence.
“You’re lucky your boyfriend can fly, too,” Uriah whispered in his ear.
When opened his eyes this time, he was high above the smoke and fumes of the mid-air explosion, wrapped in a familiar leather jacket as two strong, tattooed arms held him close.
“Thank you,” said . “But you have to let me fight.”
Uriah looked sternly at as they floated above the chaos. “Then don’t expect me to leave your side.”
“Fine,” pouted. “Take me back down.”
