Chapter 12
Hades
Today is the day.
I’m either going to end my nightmare or succumb to it.
The sound of my cell door unlocking rattles my nerves, and I glance up to see Levins step inside, holding a cell phone out to me.
“It’s Zodiac,” he says.
I take the device and press it to my ear. “Hey, brother. Please don’t tell me there’s a problem.”
My VP chuckles. “Nope, no problem. Just wanted to let you know that everything is good to go on the outside. Keys are in the rear passenger tire well, and there’s a gun in the glove box with extra ammo. There are also two full syringes in the center console if you need them.”
“Expecting trouble?” I ask.
“Ya never know. Better to be prepared, though.”
“Agreed.” I run a hand through my hair, more than ready for two o’clock to get here. “K.C. is bringing Wiley Peterson with him.”
“Shit,” he grumbles. “What happened to Bones?”
“Got himself sent to solitary for a month. Shivved his cellmate for snoring too loud.”
“Well, we’ll get him another day, another way. Bodybag’s death won’t go unpunished.”
“I know.” I glance at Levins, whose two-way radio is coming to life. “Gotta go, brother.”
“Later.”
Zodiac disconnects the call, and I hand Levins his cell, noticing his forehead is scrunched in confusion.
“What is it?” I demand.
“We may have a problem,” he says slowly.
“What problem?” I snarl.
“You’ve got a visitor.”
“That’s impossible. It’s not even visit day. That’s why we picked today.”
“I know but apparently, the warden set it up.”
“Who the fuck is it?”
“Stanley said her name is Willow Crane.”
My brows shoot up in surprise. Who’s this Willow chick, and why did she schedule a visit with me through the warden? I have no clue, but I’m guessing Warden Cooper thought he was doing me a favor by handling it. We’ve kept him out of the planning for today, so he has plausible deniability.
“And we’ve got what, an hour or so until the shit hits the fan?” Levins glances at his phone before nodding. “Okay, then we’re fine. I’ll make sure I’m done with her in time.”
“You sure? I can spread the word that we need to hold off.”
“No,” I snap. “This happens today, or it doesn’t happen at all. And we both know what my fate is if it doesn’t happen.”
“If you’re sure.”
“I’m sure.” I stick my hands out, wrists together. “Cuff me, man, so we can get this shit over with.”
